Learners from Bishop Lavis High schoolsare putting their best efforts toward creat-ing positive futures for themselves througha unique project at the Counselling and So-cial Development Centre (CSD).

Future Link has been in operation for thepast five years and given participants an im-portant insight into the world of work thatawaits them when they finish high school.

Last week they hosted an awards eveningfor participants and Elvino Botha, a productof the programme, who is now the facilita-

tor, said that he was very proud to be associ-atedwith this excitingprogramme, and theywould like to see more learners take part init for the benefits that it can bring in theirlives.

“We have built a very good relationshipwith the two schools in the area, which hasled to the success of this programme,” hesaid.

“The objective of this project is to preparelocal high school Grade 11 learners for theworld of work. Learners are taken througha series of skills development workshopssuch as personal development, leadership,and CV writing and interview skills, as well

as career guidance.”Learners are also exposed (normally dur-

ing their mid-year school holidays) to a realjob environment where they have to shadowan employee working in a career of theirchoice.

They are expected to secure their ownplacement through a letter of support fromthe CSD and must also provide their ownmeans of transport to and from the work-place then finally get placed within a realjob environment where they have to shadowan employee at a company of their choice.V More information about the project from 021 9345420.

Adams vertel dat die doel met hierdieprojek dus is om dissipline in huishou-dings te bevorder. “Om dit te doen is ditbelangrik om gesonde verhoudings tussenouers en kinders te bou,” verduidelik hy.

“Daar moet reëls in huishoudings gelden goeie kommunikasie tussen ouers enkinders moet aangeleer word.”

Hy sê dit is ook belangrik dat ouers leer-ders en kinders moet ondersteun en kin-ders moet leer oor gesagsfigure in huishou-dings en hoe om reëls te eerbiedig.

Die ATKV befonds hierdie projek en issedert 23 Augustus vanjaar aktief betrokkeby die projek. Tot nou was daar projekteby meer as 50 omliggende skole.

Volgens Hearne is daar op ’n beraad op30 Augustus vanjaar oor dissipline in dieWes-Kaapse skole min verwys na die rolvan ouers. “Die ouers en huishoudings isdie primêre bron van ’n kind se opvoedingen dissipline. Die ouers speel dus die be-langrikste rol in hierdie proses.

Over the past few months the Delft Policingprecinct have experienced a number of seri-ous crimes such as murders, attemptedmurders and other gang-related incidents.According to Delft station commander

Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, some of these in-cidents can be viewed as being gang-related,which they police under the ambit of Opera-tion Combat.Jansen pointed out that his station man-

agement has set certain intervention meas-urements in place, as part of OperationCombat, to deal with the scourge and to pre-vent and or reduce these gang related inci-dents.“Since the beginning of April this year

these measures have gotten us some goodarrests and these measures will be ongoinguntil we get rid of the gang leaders (Highfly-ers), their runners and drug peddlers,” hesaid.He attributes the success achieved by the

partnerships formed through the CPFwhich include, safety partners, neighbour-hood watches, businesses, community,churches, schools and community leaders.Jansen placed a lot of emphasis on the con-tributions of the religious fraternity.“Through the CPF and churches the part-

nership was initiated through conductingopen air church services, crime awarenessmarches, community meetings and otheractivities.”Jansen also pointed out that the emphasis

will be on community involvement in their

assistance during crime prevention opera-tions, with visible patrols and for residentsto come forward with valuable and reliableinformation.Looking at statistics from the area Jansen

pointed out that in 37 cases of murder thatwere opened 50 arrests were made.“When it comes to attempted murders

there were 34 arrests in 28 cases,” he said.“In 12 cases of house robberies we made

14 arrests and made 10 arrests in five casesof hijackings. When it comes to robberywith firearms there were 25 cases reportedand we made 43 arrests.”Brigadier Jansen concluded that the fig-

ures provided should be an indication of thecommitment of themembers ofDelft to erad-icate crime and to create a safe environmentfor the residents.

Cops target highflyers

Delft police are achieving some successfulcriminal convictions.A 22-year-old suspects faces seven years

imprisonment this week after robbing a 26-year-old woman from Wesbank, at knife-point last year.The incident happened in September

when the victim was walking along Stellen-bosch Arterial road.

At the intersection of the R300 she was ac-costed by the suspect who threatened herwith a knife and robbed her of her Nokiacellphone. He fled the scene on foot.Through excellent, consistent and dedi-

cated detective work, detective ConstableMarlon Brooks was able to arrest the sus-pectwho lives inTolletjie Street, Roosendal.In November the suspect, now 23-years-

old, received a seven year prison sentence,of which two years were suspended for fiveyears in the Bellville Regional Court. Hewas also found unfit to possess a firearm.The police also recovered the phone at a

local Cash Crusaders.Detective Branch Commander, Colonel

Police in Belville South are warningshop owners to be alert and report allsuspicious vehicles and persons.The warning comes after a Somali-

an shop was robbed at gunpoint onSaturday 29 November at 21:20.Warrant Officer Ian Williams of

the Bellville South police said therobbers forced their way into theshop fired at the shop assistant.They then made off with approx-

imately R1500 cash, 2 cartons of ciga-rettes and a Nokia cellphone.The robbers fled in a white Dyna

truckwith steel sheeting on the sides,bars on top and an open back.Residents recalled afterwards ha-

ving seen the truck drive around theareaandhavingbeenparkednear theshop. No persons were injured.Acase of armedrobbery is being in-

vestigated.

Hundreds of hungry children are fedweekly by Meals on Wheels at the Pa-row Preparatory School, De Vrijzee

Primary School and two outpatient clinicsat Tygerberg Hospital.“Most of the children arrive hungry at

these schools and at the hospital,” says Lin-daLouw,manager ofMeals onWheels inPa-row. Louw heads a massive feeding schemethat provides more than 115 000 meals peryear, of which close to 300 per week are han-ded out to these children.“The Tygerberg Children’s Hospital pae-

diatric outpatients is a busy service,” saysDrCilla Springer, a paediatrician at thehos-pital. She says children from both the Capemetropole and outlying areas in the platte-land attend these subspecialist clinics.In order to reach the hospital by 07:00,

children leave home early in the morningand have to travel long distances by publictransport. The children often spend manyhours tohave their folders opened, thenwai-ting for their physician consultations andlater queueing for the pharmacy.According to a research study by a social

worker some timeago, food security is apro-blem for a significant proportion of these fa-milies. The majority of these children arefrom a lower socioeconomic group.“Meals on Wheels has served an invalua-

ble role in improving the physical and emo-tionalmorale of our children and their care-

givers andwe thank this generous organisa-tion for their commitment in providing avital service to our families,” Springer says.Louw, who also heads the Tygerberg Ser-

vice Centre for the Aged, says she is veryproud of the seniors at this centre, many ofwhom it is a passion to be involvedwithMe-

als on Wheels.“There are two senior couples, the Castles

and the Josephs, for whom it is an annualhighlight to serve the special Christmas tre-ats to these children. They have respective-ly reached out at the hospital for 11 and sixyears now,” says Louw.

was very proud of their achievements andexcited about the growth of the organisa-tion over the past five years.“We had humble beginnings at The

RangeHighnowweare rendering servicesto 13 schools in and around Elsies River- and still growing,” she said proudly.

The organisation is funded by Depart-ment of Social Development (DSD) forEar-ly intervention, providing services to chil-dren and youth involved in using drugs.“We believe we also complement the De-

partment of Education’s drug testing initi-ative by providing evidence based pro-grams to vulnerable youth and their fami-lies,” she said.“What we have been doing is proving

successful and that is why people believein us and we want to expand this serviceto the Belhar area and beyond.“Equilibrium values partnerships and

are expanding our victim empowermentprogramme, which we hope will also befunded by DSD as they have expressed aninterest.“We have been providing supportive

JoeWilson said according to informationat hand, two unknown men were seenwalking with the deceased, pretending tobe friends, when one of them pulled outa firearm and fatally shot the victim.

“Hewas later identified asMark Juliusaka “Smirfie” from Witzenberg Lane,”

said Wilson.“The motive for the shooting is un-

known and the identity of the suspects isalso unknown. Two spent cartridges we-re recovered at the scene and the one sus-pect was wearing a white top and theother wearing a black hooded top.”

The suspects fled down Anrieth Laneinto Da Gama Road where they disappea-red. There was plenty of festive fun at theDelft Community Hall last Friday whenHOPE Cape Town hosted its annual Chil-dren’s Christmas Party.

Over 300 childrenenjoyed theactivitieswhich included jumping castles, a photobooth, face painting and loads of other en-tertainment.

The childrenwere also treated to lunchand ice cream.

According to HOPE Cape Town DonorRelations Manager Fahim Docrat, seeingthe smiling faces was worth all the effort.

“This event has now become a high-light in the community social calendarand gives us the opportunity to bring joyto these children and provide a safe spacefor them to be children,” he said.

“Often children in such communitiesare forced to grow up much too soon andwe hope and call for wider long term ef-forts by all stakeholders to ensurewe cre-ate and sustain an environment wherewe take better care of our children andsupport efforts to nurture the next gener-ation.

“For this one day we helped the chil-dren forget all their troubles. I personallyenjoyed sharing their joy when we hand-ed out Christmas parcels which includeda toy, to each child.”

“This is a definitive but necessary learn-ing curve for allmen andwewant to see howthe tide turns if and when men play that fa-therly role.”

Police are requesting the community’s assis-tance in preventing tragic incidents invol-ving swimming pools and running watersuch as rivers and the sea. According to Bri-gadier Hendrik Jansen station commanderat Delft SAPS this time of the year presentscertain challenges in so far as that childrenand adults drown because they are ill infor-med of the dangers that lurks in swimming

pools and in running water.“They also underestimate the powers of the

sea currents and then endup indifficult situa-tions,” he said.

He requested that parents should not allowyoung children to be in the water without su-pervision and that they should take extremecaution and respect the power of nature.

The community is requested to take heedand apply the following precautionary meas-ures.

V Donot get intowater alone, not even if you

are a strong swimmer.V Children should never swim alone or

cross running waters, when it is unsafe.V Ensure that thewater depths are appro-

priate for swimming and diving.V Children should be constantly supervi-

sed when they are near water, even duringbath time.

V Install a safety barrier around swim-ming pools at home.

V Empty baths, basins, sinks immediate-ly after use.

V Do not duck or push others into andround waters.

You should also be safety conscious nearrivers:

V Never cross overflowing rivers.V Be careful not to stand on an overhan-

ging bank.V Before entering the water, check for the

presence and strength of a current.V If caught in a fast river current, float feet

first in order to absorb any impact with thefeet and legs, thus protecting the head.

An Eerste River detective based at theClaremont police station appeared incourt last week on charges of corrup-

tion and defeating the ends of justice.Detective ConstableACHendrickswas ar-

rested last Wednesday morning at his homeinEersteRiver.He appeared in theWynbergMagistrate’s Court the following day. Hewas, however, released on bail.In a statement released on Thursday the

police said the arrest formed part of ongoingefforts to root out corruption within theSouth African Police Service.Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial

police spokesperson, said the policemanwillbe chargedwithdefeating the ends of justice,and corruption.

He said the arrest emanates from a Clare-mont assault case in which a female cleanerwas allegedly severely assaulted.According tomedia reports, the assault re-

sulted in the victim, Delia Adonis (52), sus-taining injuries when she was attacked atStadium On Main in Claremont, where sheworks as a cleaner, on 17 October.Van Wyk said the case was withdrawn by

the senior public prosecutor due to a state-ment furnished to the prosecutor by Hen-dricks, who was investigating the case.“Themember allegedly submitted a sworn

statement (by the victim) to withdraw thecase when the victim had no intention of do-ing so,” van Wyk said.“The member received an undisclosed

amount of cash from the suspects in orderto cover the victim’s medical costs, but heallegedly never handed the money over to

the victim for this purpose,” van Wyk ex-plained.Three of the five suspects, some of them

students at theUniversity ofCapeTown, andall in their early twenties, appeared in theWynberg Magistrate Court last week oncharges of attempted murder, assault withthe intent to do grievous bodily harm andcrimen injuria, it is reported.“The Western Cape police appeal to the

public to report corruption by using the pro-vincial complaints line aswe are eager to ridthe service of bad elements.“We would like to also express our appre-

ciation for all the information forwardedthus far,” said van Wyk.The constable appeared in the Wynberg

Magistrates Court on 10 February 2015.

In just over three months a private Face-book dating group has burst at the seams,with just under 18 000 members joining.The “Dunoon singles find someoneyou lo-

his partner, Karabo Thejane, quickly esca-lated into a virtually unmanageable situati-on.In thebeginning the two friendswere able

to screen every request, but now they recei-ve somany they simply allow people to join.Every day more than 100 requests flood

their inbox.The founders made several stringent ru-

les when they started the group, the mostimportant, according to Ferrarie, being ru-le number one: “Rule number one is to ne-ver break any of the rules,” he insists.“We also don’t want people to fight their

fights in public. Go do it privately.”One of his main gripes with what has

transpired recently is people posting porno-graphic photos on the site, which is obvi-ously against the rules.“If someone posts something tasteless on

the site then everyone sees it. We removethe photo and ban the member,” he adds.Unfortunately in that time many unsus-

pectingmembersmight have seen the photoand the damage has been done.Maintaining a semblance of control in a

group that is growing exponentially is an is-

sue the founders are struggling with daily.Ferrarie says they hired two women to

help them a while ago, but they didn’t dowhat they were told and had to be releasedof their duties.“Another rule is that people must listen

to us,” he says.The site has been set up for people to find

companions, but there is nothing stoppinga person who has already found someonefrom joining.When Ferrarie was asked how he went

about marketing the group, he said that hewent on to other dating Facebook sites ba-sed in Cape Town and spread the word onthose groups.Just a few minutes later and requests to

join the Dunoon group inevitably flood in,because other similar sites “are simply tooslow” according to Ferrarie.Well established Facebook groups that

share vital community news struggle to re-ach 10 000 members, so perhaps everyonecan take a leaf out of Ferrarie andThejane’sbook.The age-old adage that “sex sells” might

on the other hand bewhat fuels the interest.This is, however, more than just a dating

site according to Ferrarie.“This is great for theDunoon community,

because it brings all of us closer together.People know one another much better now.Suddenly people I have never met knowwhere I live.”This year international marketing firm

After taking out my car licenseI forgot to display it on mywindow. When I saw a trafficofficer writing out a fine, heexplained that there were twoamounts on it – R500 if yourlicense lapsed or R300 if youtook it out and did not displayit.

So it’s two weeks later and Iwant to pay it. I first try theinternet, as fines can be paidvia Absa. The only problem isthere is no reference numberon the fine, so the paymentwill not go through.

I then go to Absa, where thecashier tells me that theTraffic Department’s system isoffline and I have to wait for asecond letter through the SAPost Office.

No problem. So I go off tothe Traffic Department inDurbanville, where I am toldthat they can only take theR500 payment, not the R300one. This can only happen atthe Parow Traffic Department.

I then called the mainnumber, where I was told thatthe fine has not been capturedso I can’t pay it.

Why issue fines if they knowthat the offender can’t pay it?

So many who regard them-selves as “dog lovers” forgetthat while they are at work,away for a weekend or attimes even a week, we the“lonely, old or just selfish” aresubjected to the continuous sadhowling, whining and barkingfrom many a neglected “pet”.

You leave home at the crackof dawn, returning some eighthours or more later.

The so-called “pet” is givenits food and then the owner isoff to bed and sleeps like a log,never hearing the night bark-ing. And so it is every singleday.

How many genuine lovinghours are spent with theanimal? As far as you areconcerned your dog protectsyour home and the barking “istheir way of communicating”.To whom, I ask?

To the phrase “get a life”,have you not noticed that wewho complain about the bark-ing are very much alive. We arethe ones who hear and are notdeaf to the sounds of an animalin distress, just surviving a“dog’s life” day after day.

Die beamptes inelke voertuig was besig om ietsop hul selfone te doen.

Ek het vir die manlikeverkeersbeampte, nadat ekteruggeloop het na my voertuig,genoem dat hulle liewers diewetsoortreders vasvat as omdaar te sit. Sy antwoord wasdat hulle dit nog gaan doen.

Die kersie op die koek wastoe ek van die Uitsig-gemeentese feesmark kom – om ongeveer10:50 – en daar staan nog ’nverkeersmotor met ’n beampteonder die bome naby Stodels inEversdalstraat geparkeer. Diéwas ook op sy selfoon besig.

van die jaar hieroor standpunt inneemnie, maar elke dag van die ander 349 dae.Raak ons nie almal betrokke nie, gaan

Enige herhaaldelike belediging of lasterteen ’n spesifieke persoon kan vertolkword as geweld in terme van die Wet opGesinsgeweld,” sê sy.

’n Slagoffer kan gratis by die naastelanddroshof se gesinsgeweld-eenheid, ’ninterim-interdik verkry, wat op dieselfdedag uitgereik word. Volgens Beeselaarmoes slagoffers van teistering in die ver-lede die hooggeregshof nader, wat etlikeduisende rande gekos het.

“Die klaer moet egter probeer om so-veel moontlik inligting op die verklaringte verskaf. As die oortreder se identiteitbekend is, sal hy dadelik met ’n interiminterdik beteken word.

“Ons het die ambulansdienste gebel,maar hulle het nie uitgekom nie. Uit des-peraatheid het ons die polisie gebel, want’n taxi is vreeslik duur,” sê Carstens.

Wat sy volgende gedoen het, kan haarnou in groot moeilikheid laat beland,maar sy sê sy gee nie om nie.

“Toe die polisie nie uitkom nie, het ekgebel en gesê my kind is geskiet. Vyf mi-nute later toe stop hulle voor die deur.Wat het van ons gemeenskap geword asdie polisie net uitkom vir geweldsmisda-de? Kom hulle net uit as bendelede ge-skiet word? As my dogter gesterf het, soudit ’n lelike ding afgegee het.

“Hulle wil my nou aankla, omdat ek glodie polisie mislei het met my oproep. Hul-le kan doen wat hulle wil; ek is nie bangnie.” Om haar dogter by die hospitaal tekry, moes hulle toe later ’n taxi neem.“Tot vandag (Maandag) het die ambulans

“Ek kan die voorval bevestig, maar kannog nie in dié stadium bevestig of daar’n kriminele klag teen die vrou gelê gaanword nie,” sê Pheifer.

Sy sê verder mense moet daarteenwaak om oproepe na die polisie te maakas dit nie vir ’n ware noodgeval is nie.

bandbefore the release of their debut-album,Dirty Deals in December 2013.Since then they’ve supported bands like

aKing, Taxi Violence and Van Coke Kartel,performed at Ramfest and toured to Johan-nesburg and the Garden Route.“It was my first time up to Joburg, not a

big fan,” guitarist Pieter Bekker says, add-ing that Ramfest was also a bit of an adven-ture.He got lost picking up equipment in Cape

Town and made it to the festival in Helder-stroom with minutes to spare.“He literally pitched up as we were going

on stage,” frontman Jeandré Swanepoelchips in.“We’re the same ol’ De Wallen, same ol’

nonsense, still don’t know what the hellwe’re doing,” he says.

New singleBut despite the band’s “devil-may-care”

attitude, they still spend a lot of time work-ing on breaking into the industry.They released a new single, “Heart Rate

Rocker”, in May and Jeandré says it’s morelight-hearted than the material on DirtyDeals.“After the first album we had time to re-

flect on the writing process and back thenwe thought we were going to be a seriousrock ‘n roll band, but we realised we’re notall that serious.”Jeandré describes “Heart Rate Rocker” as

a “tongue-in cheek jingle about the girlsfrom Stellenbosch” and says fans can expectmore of the same when they record again.There will be another new element to af-

fect the band’s sound when they recordagain, thanks to new drummer AndreWent-zel.“We’re lucky to have snapped him up be-

cause he’s a little older than us and a lotmore business minded.”Local fans may recognise André as the

Singer and songwriter Jesse Clegg iscurrently busy with his longest tour todate.

With more than 20 stops across the count-ry, Jesse is using the tour to promote his la-test album, Jesse Clegg Live and Unplugged.

“We’ve been playing these acoustic showsfor the last 18 months and they’ve been get-ting a really good response,” Jesse explains,adding that people often come up to him af-ter the show asking for an acoustic album.

He decided to record one of his acousticperformances at The Venue, in Johannes-burg, where ambient mics helped to capturethe “essence” or “vibe” of the show. JesseClegg Live and Unplugged is made up of re-imagined songs from his previous albums,as well as covers of songs that have influen-ced his music.

“When you have just two guitars and twovoices, you really have to be creative withhow you present the songs.” Jesse says hehad to work hard to rework songs, some ofwhich are big rock tracks, in a way thatwould still be new and interesting. “It’s a ve-ry stripped down, very intimate set.”

For the recording, Jesse was joined on sta-

ge by guitarist Richard Onraet, who is joi-ning him on tour, percussionist JasonSampson and bassist Roger Hobbs. The al-bum was still mixed in studio like normalalbums, but the live recording gives it a“spontaneous energy”.

Jesse’s acoustic arrangements will be ex-posed to all kinds of audiences as the toursees him playing everywhere from festivalsto smaller clubs.

“It’s a diverse range of shows, sizes andformats.” He’ll also be taking his band to a

lot of new venues. “It’s a big experiment.”Jesse’s unplugged album was released

specifically for the tour, but he’ll be back instudio to work on his next album as soon asit’s done.

He’s hoping to release his new material assoon as March, but he’ll need to decidewhich of the 35 songs he’s currently workingwith will make it to studio.

“When you have a body of work, there arealways some songs that are better thanothers, naturally.” Jesse says he always hasa sense of what will be the first single andhe won’t stop writing until he’s found thatsong.
