In just over three months a private Face-book dating group has burst at the seams,with just under 18 000 members joining.The “Dunoon singles find someone you lo-

ve” page has attracted members from allover South Africa.

Co-founder Tdo’o Ferrarie said the pheno-menal interest hasn’t surprised him.

“Every morning I have more than 60 re-quests from people wanting to join,” he tellsTygerBurger. Last week alone over 2 500

members joined.What started reasonably slowly for him

and partner Karabo Thejane, quickly escala-ted into an almost unmanageable situation.

In the beginning the two friends were ableto screen every request, but now they recei-ve so many that they simply allow people tojoin. Every day over 100 requests flood theirinbox.

The founders made several stringent ruleswhen they started the group, the most im-portant, according to Ferrarie, being rulenumber one: “Rule number one is to neverbreak any of the rules,” he insists.

“We also don’t want people to fight theirfights in public. Go do it privately.”

One of his main gripes with what hastranspired recently is people posting porno-graphic photos on the site, which is obvious-ly against the rules.

“If someone posts something tasteless onthe site then everyone sees it. We remove thephoto and ban the member,” he adds.

Unfortunately in the time it takes to remo-ve the photo, many unsuspecting membersmight have seen it and the damage has beendone.

The Milnerton Riding Club and RidingSchool (MRC) recently extended a helpinghand to learners fromSealCollege andmadetheir day in the process.The college is a school for mentally disa-

bled children.The ponies of MRC are used as a form of

therapy as well as to help the children learnbalance and coordination.“It was a marvellous day,” says MRC

chairperson Tanya Williams.This was also the perfect occasion to use

a new custom-built ramp at MRC.On previous visits the children were not

all strong enough to mount from the smallmounting block the school had made out ofcrates, so the teachers and instructorsstrained their backs to get the children onthe ponies.A local company, Westinghouse Electric,

heard about the plight of the riding school

and the children and decided to come to therescue.Two engineers from Westinghouse, Naas

Scholtz and Brian van Rooyen, designed adisabled mounting ramp to enable the chil-dren tomount the ponies safely from a high-er height without having to climb any diffi-cult stairs.Then a few engineers built the ramp for

the riding school,making sure it is absolute-ly safe to use, with safety rails all the wayaround.“This saved the instructors and teachers

backs,” laughs Williams.MRC is a public benefit organisation and

community club that has been based in Ta-ble View for over 40 years. As part of theirgoal to give back to the local community,members volunteer their time and schoolponies to local non-profit organisationssuch as Seal College and Home of Hope.

Team solves pony problem

A Table View local has been named thewinner of the Art and Culture Trust’s(ACT) 2014 ImpACT Award for Theatre.Jade Bowers graduated from the Uni-

versity of Cape Town (UCT) with a Ba-chelor of Social Sciences in Drama andSociology. She is currently completingher Honours degree at the University ofthe Witwatersrand (WITS) with a focuson directing and design for the stage.Jade was named one of AfriPOP’s Top

site according to Ferrarie.“This is great for the Dunoon community,

because it brings all of us closer together.People know one another much better now.Suddenly people I have never met knowwhere I live.”This year international marketing firm

people across nine countries, which includ-ed South Africa.Facebook was at the top of all of the lists,

The well-known petrol attendant at theBP Sandown Service Centre who al-ways had a smile for every customer,

Charles Rambai Kashiri, was killed just twodays before his baby boy was born.

While he was walking to work on Satur-day morning at about 07:00, a BMW and amotorcycle collided on the corner of Sand-own Road and the R27.

The bike was flung into the air and hit38-year-old Kashiri, who died in hospital lat-er that day.

Table View Police are investigating a caseof culpable homicide after both Kashiri andthe motorcyclist, Zithobile Sigidi, died inthe crash.

“It is alleged the driver of the BMWturned in front of the motorcycle, whichthen collided with the BMW. The motorcy-cle was tossed in the air and fell on the sec-ond victim,” says spokesperson for TableView Police, W/O Daphne O’Reilly.

Devastating consequencesIt is also alleged the driver of the BMW

fled the scene of the accident, but what ex-actly transpired that morning pales in com-parison to the devastating consequences,which will be mourned by many.

The other petrol attendants at the BPservice centre apparently burst into tearswhen they saw the motionless Kashiri.

Management at the service centrethought it was apt to place a sign in the win-dow informing the public that the “smilingpetrol attendant” had died and that heleaves behind a heavily pregnant wife.

They gave customers the opportunity toto donate items or money to Kashiri’s wife,who gave birth to a baby boy on Mondaymorning.

According to BP Sandown owner MelanieGovender, they were overwhelmed with do-nations ranging from nappies and food tomoney and clothing.

This will all be sent to Kashiri’s grievingwife and newborn son.

He worked for the service station for closeto five years and has become famous for hisfriendliness.

Amazing supportAccording to Govender, people from all

over, regulars or just passer-bys, have do-nated items to the Kashiris.

“Their support is absolutely amazing. Wewould like to thank each and every personwho helped,” she adds.

News that Kashiri died just days beforehis wife expected their only child rocked thewider community.

Kashiri’s employers relayed informationabout the birth on Monday via social media.

A Table View Neighbourhood Watchmember posted the news on the watch’s Fa-cebook page and a day later over 300 people

“liked” the post.The accident itself was also shared on the

page.So when members were told that the baby

and mother were healthy, many saw it asa silver lining around the tragic deaths.

One wrote that while the circumstancesare tragic, every birth should be celebrated.

She shared the sentiments of most whenshe wrote: “Wishing the family all the bestfor the future”.

Sigidi, who was renowned for his passionfor motorcycles, worked as a senior inspec-tor at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Elizabeth Viljoen is collecting food donationsin order to provide a Christmas meal for thehomeless, pensioners and unemployed.

The menu will consist of a chicken vegeta-ble pasta, mince curry and rice, and vegeta-bles such as potatoes, carrots, peas, backedbeans and sweet corn.

A trifle pudding sponge, jelly, ideal milk,canned fruit and custard will also be servedalong with juice, tea or coffee.

The more the better for a blessed meal, soif you can donate any of these items youshould consider it.

Elizabeth is also collecting second handclothes and toys for the homeless.

The Rotary Club of Blouberg has once againswept in like a knight in shining armour tohelp the less fortunate.

This time the beneficiary of their fund-raising efforts was Eric Miles Cheshire Ho-mes.

The Home received R12 620 from the rota-rians after the money was raised at a recentBingo Night, which is held every month onthe first Tuesday at the nearby Italian Club.

The home’s manager, Alet Bosman, is al-ways over the moon when someone helpsthem perform their vital task in the commu-nity, but she emphasises that the rotariansgive them much more than just money.

“They also have excellent advice on a wi-de range of subjects. Many of their membersare experts in their field,” says Bosman.

“We have a very good relationship with

some of these organisations, and quitefrankly, we would have to close our doorswere it not for them.”

The money, which was recently handedover to Bosman, will be used for operationalcosts and to spoil their residents with aChristmas dinner.

“To everyone out there, you can also helpmaking this Christmas and New Year me-morable for our residents by donating so-mething,” concludes Bosman.

Marius Boraine from the Rotary Clubsays they have a long history with the homefor the disabled, which is based in Sandrift.

“This is, however, the first Bingo Nightwhere the proceeds went to Eric Miles. Weencourage the public to help us help othersby joining our Bingo Nights,” he says.

Happy Feet, the juvenile penguin whocaptured the hearts of TygerBurgerreaders, is well on the road to recove-

ry.He will spend Christmas at the Southern

African Foundation for the Conservation ofCoastal Birds (Sanccob) along with 445other abandoned African penguin chicksfrom around the Peninsula.

Every year between October and Janua-ry, Sanccob helps hundreds of African pen-guin chicks that have been abandoned bytheir parents during their annual moultingcycle.

During this time the parents replacetheir “tuxedo” with a brand new set of wa-terproof feathers and are unable to hunt forfish and feed their young during the threeto four week moulting process.

As a result, the chicks that have yet tofledge, like Happy Feet, are abandoned andface starvation unless conservation organi-sations like Sanccob intervene.

On Christmas day, Happy Feet will wakeup to an enriching meal of sardines fed tohim by his caring minders.

During the day he will be kept hydratedthrough regular administration of freshwater and special electrolyte fluids.

He will get his strength back with dailydoses of vitamins and hone his swimmingskills in the pool, so he will be fit and readyfor release back into the wild to join theother 18 000 breeding pairs left in the wild.

In the evening he will sleep in a comfyheated pen with soft matting.

As a gesture of thanks to Happy Feet’srescuer, Liezl Bestbier from Melkbos-strand, Sanccobhas adoptedHappyFeet forLiezl.

Tembile Nyoka from Dunoon is still contrib-uting as best he can to the local community,despite ongoing challenges.

The demand for Nyoka’s non-profit organ-isation (NPO), Nceduluntu Academy ofLearning, remains high for all those whowant to brush up on their computer literacy.

But lack of funding and facilities meansNyoka pays thousands of rands a monthfrom his own pocket to keep things going.TygerBurger reported on his NPO in Feb-

ruary this year in the article entitled “Mak-ing difference in lives of locals”.

Back then Nyoka asked readers for sec-ond-hand computers, and people responded

kindly, but almost 10 months later the acade-my is still running at a loss.

“We need someone to connect our currentcomputers to the internet, because we areforced to go to a local internet cafe to givethe students practical lessons,” says Nyoka.

This year 42 students ultimately managedto complete the course.

Connectivity is of course not the only chal-lenge the NPO is facing.

Volunteers help Nyoka with the training,but he says that even they need minimumcompensation.

He works as hard as he can as an instruc-tor and paramedic, but his efforts to raisefunds for the NPO are not enough.

The course is designed to help people mar-ket themselves online.

“We teach people to follow the right chan-nels and get in touch with the right personat a company who does the hiring,” he ex-plains.

He first thought of the idea when he sawunemployedpeople standingat traffic lights,begging for jobs.

“Some of them are starving... So I thoughtto myself what could I do to change the livesof others?”

His idea is driven by determination, butwithout sponsorship it is doomed to failure.

After taking out my car licenseI forgot to display it on mywindow. When I saw a trafficofficer writing out a fine, heexplained that there were twoamounts on it – R500 if yourlicense lapsed or R300 if youtook it out and did not displayit.

So it’s two weeks later and Iwant to pay it. I first try theinternet, as fines can be paidvia Absa. The only problem isthere is no reference numberon the fine, so the paymentwill not go through.

I then go to Absa, where thecashier tells me that theTraffic Department’s system isoffline and I have to wait for asecond letter through the SAPost Office.

No problem. So I go off tothe Traffic Department inDurbanville, where I am toldthat they can only take theR500 payment, not the R300one. This can only happen atthe Parow Traffic Department.

I then called the mainnumber, where I was told thatthe fine has not been capturedso I can’t pay it.

Why issue fines if they knowthat the offender can’t pay it?

Is the Traffic Departmentrun by human beings? I ambeginning to wonder...

After reading the SMS fromAnonymous, I feel the need to“bite back” (TB SMSes, 26November).

So many who regard them-selves as “dog lovers” forgetthat while they are at work,away for a weekend or attimes even a week, we the“lonely, old or just selfish” aresubjected to the continuous sadhowling, whining and barkingfrom many a neglected “pet”.

You leave home at the crackof dawn, returning some eighthours or more later.

The so-called “pet” is givenits food and then the owner isoff to bed and sleeps like a log,never hearing the night bark-ing. And so it is every singleday.

How many genuine lovinghours are spent with theanimal? As far as you areconcerned your dog protectsyour home and the barking “istheir way of communicating”.To whom, I ask?

To the phrase “get a life”,have you not noticed that wewho complain about the bark-ing are very much alive. We arethe ones who hear and are notdeaf to the sounds of an animalin distress, just surviving a“dog’s life” day after day.

Die kersie op die koek wastoe ek van die Uitsig-gemeentese feesmark kom – om ongeveer10:50 – en daar staan nog ’nverkeersmotor met ’n beampteonder die bome naby Stodels inEversdalstraat geparkeer. Diéwas ook op sy selfoon besig.

The City of Cape Town is committed toensuring the safety of beach goers.A total of 250 trained and accredited li-

feguards will be deployed to various bea-ches between 10:00 and 18:00 daily.This service will be boosted by lifes-

aving clubs on some beaches, LifesavingWestern Province’s volunteer services,and the National Sea Rescue Institute.In addition, there will be 218 lifeguards

on duty who will oversee the City’s 36 pu-blic swimming pools over the holidays.“We want to emphasise that safety is a

shared responsibility between the cityand our beach goers and pool users. Whi-le the city does provide lifeguards in con-junction with our partners, this service

does not exist to take the place of a parentor guardian’s supervision of children,”said city mayco member for CommunityServices and Special Projects, BelindaWalker.“Thepublic are encouraged to swimon-

ly in designated swimming areas indica-tedby flags andonlywhereour lifeguardsare on duty. There are also law enforce-ment officers patrolling beaches to assistin ensuring that people swim only in de-signated areas.We ask that all people res-pect the instructions of lifeguards andlaw enforcement officers and report ir-responsible behaviour in the water, suchas people swimming off the rocks, so thatthey can pre-emptively keep people safe.”

With a new drummer and a string of bigshows behind their name, De Wallen are po-wering on into the new year.TygerBurger last spoke to the Kuils River

bandbefore the release of their debut-album,Dirty Deals in December 2013.Since then they’ve supported bands like

aKing, Taxi Violence and Van Coke Kartel,performed at Ramfest and toured to Johan-nesburg and the Garden Route.“It was my first time up to Joburg, not a

big fan,” guitarist Pieter Bekker says, ad-ding that Ramfest was also a bit of an adven-ture.He got lost picking up equipment in Cape

Town and made it to the festival in Helder-stroom with minutes to spare.“He literally pitched up as we were going

on stage,” frontman Jeandré Swanepoelchips in.“We’re the same ol’ De Wallen, same ol’

nonsense, still don’t know what the hellwe’re doing,” he says.But despite the band’s “devil-may-care”

attitude, they still spend a lot of time wor-king on breaking into the industry.They released a new single, “Heart Rate

Rocker”, in May and Jeandré says it’s morelight hearted than Dirty Deals.“After the first album we had time to re-

flect on the writing process and back thenwe thought we were going to be a seriousrock ‘n roll band, but we realised we’re notall that serious.”Jeandré describes “Heart Rate Rocker” as

a “tongue-in cheek jingle about the girlsfrom Stellenbosch” and fans can expect mo-re of the same when they record again.There will be another new element to af-

fect in band’s soundwhen they record again,thanks to new drummer Andre Wentzel.“We’re lucky to have snapped him up be-

sport. Swimming is a life skill and is a vitalpart of the community.There are many swim schools available,

but not all are certified to the correct stan-dards, or registered to WPA.As the custodians of the sport,WPA is vigi-

lant with regards to the requirements oneneeds in order to open learn-to-swim pro-grammes.There are various regulations to be put in

place in order to get registered and accredi-ted with WPA.A few very important criteria needed for

swim teachers/coaches to be registered toWP Aquatics/Swim South Africa are: Level1 first aid certificate; official police clearan-ce; swim South Africa certification (comple-ted learn to swim instructors course); proofof annual registration to WPA/SwimmingSA; the learn to swim school be registeredto WPA.It is imperative parents request proof of

current registration to WPA. Parents cancheck the Western Province website for re-gistered learn-to-swim coaches.WPA has been trying to develop the sport

I made birdies on 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.It was then that I started tothink to myself that Imight break 30. Standingon the 16th par three, thewind was swirling a bit. Ileftmy tee shot short in thebunker, played a poor bun-ker shot and two putted fora bogey four. My last holeof the day the far five 17thI birdied giving me the 29andmy first Bellville OpenChampionship.”As golf director, Werner

works closely with thegreenkeeper to ensure thecourse is in the best possi-ble condition all yearround. “I very pleased tosay that on Friday 12 De-cember we will officialyopen our new short gamepractice area where ourmember can work on theirgame.Weare also installedthree hitting nets forwarm-up next to the prac-tice area.”When asked what he

would like to achieve ingolf, the answer was plainand simple.“When you represent

Western Province golf for10 years, you get a specialblazer and badge. That isit, I am going to keep play-ing my best golf to ensurethat I get one of them.When that day comes, itwill sure be a very proudmoment.”
