Story time at Milnerton Libraryhas changed. Every Wednesday, older children can attend storyhour at 15:00, while toddlers canlisten to their favourite stories onThursdays at 10:30. The librarywill also host a craft session withElmarie today (Wednesday 15 July)at 11:00 and a puppet show onFriday 17 July at 11:00.

He also gave an overview on the differentdays which most crimes were committedand explained residential burglaries mostfrequently took place on Wednesdays,Thursdays and Fridays while house robber-ies where residents were confronted byarmed criminals most commonly occurredon Wednesdays.According to Prins, the analysis further

indicates theft out of motor vehicles oc-curred mostly on Fridays, Mondays and

Tuesdays. Vosloo highlighted how oftencrimes were committed on or after a Thurs-day as this was known as “bin day”. He ap-pealed to residents to not give hand-outs butrather support organisations assistinghomeless people.“We ask that you please put your bins out

in the morning and not the night before. Itattracts people to the area and residents of-ten put food out, washing machines and oldmicrowaves. This iswhy theCommunityPo-

lice Forum has launched its Give Responsi-bly Campaign,” he said.Vosloo also said the station and staff were

faced with various challenges in the pre-cinct including the expansion of Table Viewwith new residential and commercial devel-opments on the cards.“Our precinct is just getting bigger and

bigger and it affects our response time. If youlook at how big Parklands and Sunningdaleis and there is only one van for that area.

It’s difficult and we cannot be around everycorner all the time but if the tannie [aunty]calls us when she sees something suspi-cious, we can be there or we can relay themessage to the neighbourhood watches,” hesaid.Vosloo highlighted the recent arrest of

three men involved in the robbery of a Brit-ish American Tobacco van in Table Viewand arrests made during Operation Fiela inParklands.

Authorities are investigating thecircumstances surrounding acollision in Koeberg Road where15 people were injured last week.

According to a report fromER24 paramedics, a collision be-tween a taxi and a car took placeat the intersection of KoebergandPlattekloof roads onWednes-day 15 July.

ER24 spokesperson ChitraBodasing says on arrival, para-medics found some patients ly-ing in the area surrounding the

collision and some walkingaround.

“The taxi was lying on its side.Paramedics assessed the pa-tients and found that they hadsustained minor to moderate in-juries.

“The patientswere treated andtransported to local hospitals forfurther medical care. The exactcause of the collision is un-known. Authorities were onscene for further investiga-tions.”

Provincial police spokesper-son, Lieutenant Colonel AndrèTraut, says a vehicle checkpoint was conducted at the on-ly entrance and exit to theneighbourhood.

“The presence of police was

exceptionally well received bylaw abiding citizens who re-ported illegal activity sponta-neously.”

sievoertuig ’n draai by Tembies om seker temaak alles is in orde.

Party mense bring vir my kos.

Hou wakende oog oor parkeerarea

FOTO: MAGRIET THERON

WWiillddlliiffee bbeeiinngg kkiilllleedd bbyy mmoottoorriissttssMotorists travelling along the Blaauw-

berg Nature Reserve are being askedto be vigilant following the death of

several animals.According to a statement by the City of

Cape Town, Cape Grysbok, caracal, Cape co-bras and porcupines are among some of theanimals being struck by speeding motoristson roads near nature reserves.

Nocturnal animals are particularly vul-nerable in this regard. “The City is callingon motorists to be vigilant and to slow downwhen driving in these vicinities, especiallyat night, as animals often cross the roads un-expectedly. Recently a number of animalshave been killed on Otto du Plessis Driveand the R27 near the Blaauwberg Nature Re-

serve,” states the City.A caracal and Cape grysbok were killed on

the road between Bloubergstrand and Melk-bosstrand, near the Blaauwberg Nature Re-serve recently. Other animals that havebeen killed over the last year include tor-toises, Cape cobras, mole snakes, small-spot-ted genets and porcupines. In most cases, an-imals are hesitant to cross roads because itis a foreign environment to them so they willoften do so suddenly and unexpectedly.

Mayoral committee member for energy, environmental and spatial planning Johanvan der Merwe says the challenge is two-fold.

He says many motorists are not awarethey are driving through proclaimed nature

reserve areas, while at the same time manyof the animals are nocturnal, so it makes itdifficult for motorists to see the animals atnight when they unexpectedly cross theroads searching for food.

“Capetonians are fortunate to share thiscity with a range of unique plants and ani-mals, many of which are found nowhere elsein the world. We have a responsibility to en-sure we conserve and protect our biodiversi-ty. For example, the Blaauwberg Nature Re-serve alone is home to at least 47 threatenedplants and conserves 624 plant species, 40mammal species, 166 types of birds, 30 spe-cies of reptile and four amphibian species, including the dwarf burrowing skink. Theloss of a single animal can have a significant

impact on the environment,” he says.Van der Merwe further explains the re-

Base patcheswith rampededges backfilledwith bitumentreated materialalong thenorthboundcarriageway ofthe R27.

Road works warningIt may be a bumpy ride for now, but road-works along the R27 are still underway. The project is being undertaken by the

WesternCapeDepartment of Transport andPublicWorks to resurface the road betweenMilnerton and Melkbosstrand. The R71mproject started in April and is scheduled forcompletion early next year.According to a recent statement, edge

break repairs and the supplementing ofgravel shoulders will continue between theintersections of Melkbosstrand Road andTryall Road. The resurfacing of the north-bound carriageway has been completed onboth lanes between the intersections ofRacecourse Road andMarine Drive and themilling and backfilling of patches for baserepairs have started on the southbound car-riageway between the intersections of Ma-rine Drive and Bay Beach Avenue.According to department spokesperson

Byron La Hoe, the resurfacing of this car-riagewaywill only start once all base patch-ing has been completed up to RacecourseRoad intersection.“Culverts are being cleaned and broken

kerbs, channels and chutes are being re-placed on both north and southbound car-riageways between the intersections of Por-terfield/Link Road and Racecourse Road.

Mole barriers are being installed betweenthe intersections of Sandown Road andLink Road.”According to the statement, heavy rains

experienced during the winter months de-creased visibility due to mist and down-pours, and cold ambient temperatures caninfluence the planned construction activi-ties.In addition, load shedding may influence

the batching of asphalt at the supplier’splant. Generators will be used where possi-ble.Localised shoulder closures will be used

between the intersections of Tryall Roadand Melkbosstrand Road. Lanes will bemerged on the southbound carriageway be-tween the intersections of BlaauwbergRoad and Marine Drive, but both lanes willbe open to traffic during the morning peak-hour from 06:00 to 10:00.“Motorists are requested, for the sake of

their own safety as well as for that of con-struction workers, to obey all traffic in-structions, including speed limits, and todrive carefully. Road conditions changedaily as work progresses and motoristsshould be vigilant when driving along sec-tions that are under construction,” La Hoesays.

KENNISGEWING VAN ’N VERGADERING VANDIE RAAD VAN DIE STAD KAAPSTAD

MyCiTi peak express implementedA new MyCiTi express service along the

Table View corridor was launchedthis week and the City of Cape Town

says with the addition of new 18-metre high-floor buses the service will provide a rapidjourney to and from the Civic Centre stationduring peak-hour periods.

The express service was launched on Mon-day and preceding the launch, 18-metrehigh-floor buses with a capacity of 131 pas-sengers each were added to the T01 trunkroute on Saturday 18 July.

According to City mayco member fortransport, Brett Herron, the new fleet willassist in responding to the growing demandfor the MyCiTi service on the T01.

This route, he explains, is one of the busi-est and most popular MyCiTi routes in thecity and the municipality wants to ensure

they continue to meet the expectations ofour residents. “We are also introducing anexpress service so we can reduce commut-ers’ waiting and travel time during the peak-hour periods,” he says.

The buses providing the new express ser-vice will only stop at the Wood, Table View,Racecourse, and Woodstock stations enroute to the Civic Centre and back.

Express buses that start their first trip ofthe day from the Stables depot will maketheir first stop at the MyCiTi station in Du-noon, but all the other express buses willstart at the Wood station.

“With the new express service, commut-ers can expect to see an express bus – marked‘X01a’ – every six minutes at the Wood, TableView, Racecourse and Woodstock stationsduring the morning peak-hour period. If one

then counts the other T01 buses that operatein accordance with the normal T01 timeta-ble, MyCiTi passengers at the Wood, TableView, Racecourse and Woodstock stationswill be able to board a MyCiTi bus everythree minutes,” explains Herron.

The first express bus will depart from Du-noon station at 06:02 on week days and thefirst express bus from Wood station at 06:12.The last express bus will depart from Woodstation at 08:30.

In the afternoon peak-hour, the first ex-press buses will depart Civic Centre stationat 15:53, stopping at Woodstock, Racecourse,Table View and Wood stations. Express bus-es whose last trips are to Stables depot in theafternoon peak will stop at Dunoon station.

The last express bus will depart at 18:29from the Civic Centre station on weekdays.

The express buses will be marked as fol-lows:

. ‘X01a Civic Centre Express – all busestravelling to the Civic Centre station

. ‘X01b Wood express– buses travellingfrom Civic Centre station to Wood station

. ‘X01a Dunoon Express – buses travellingfrom Civic Centre station to Dunoon station

The travelling time for those using the ex-press service is likely to improve, as will thecapacity of the service between the CivicCentre station and Dunoon.

“During the peak-hour periods 29 of the 31buses on this route will be 18-metre high-floor buses with significantly more capacitythan the 12-metre buses.

The express service will run during peak-hours and on week days only.V For more information contact 0800 65 64 63.

Phoenix ratepayers are invited to an openmeeting in Phoenix Hall on Tuesday 25 Au-gust at 19:00 to establish a ratepayers’ associ-

According to data released by CrimeStats SA last week, some northern su-burbs are the most affected by crime

in the country in their respective, often“bloody” categories.

These include Kraaifontein, Table View,Bishop Lavis and Delft, among those listedon the online database run by Meerkat DataManagement.

Data released by Crime Stats SA is basedon official information from the police. Ba-sed on these facts, it would appear the stillhigh levels of crime were gradually decrea-sing.

The following is based on raw data, andnot in proportion to percentage of the popu-lation. The data covered refers to the statis-tics for 2014 (covering April 2013 to March2014).

According to these statistics, Delft ranksseventh in the Western Cape in the murdercategory (144), with Nyanga as the forerun-ner, or precinct with the highest total (305).

Kraaifontein ranks seventh in the catego-ry for reported house break-ins over the ye-ar, with a total of 1 247, with Table View fol-lowing closely with 1 235.

Where drug-related crimes are concer-ned, Delft ranked fourth (2 954), Bishop La-vis fifth (2 578) and Kraaifontein seventh (2516). Mitchells Plain was first with 6 044 ca-ses opened.

It is surmised by Africacheck.org that, due to the time periods between having re-ported the data and the financial year cover-ed, the police’s crime data might be as muchas six months outdated.

According to Africacheck, a lot of crimesgo unreported, the police data is unaudited, and there is widespread mistrust of the poli-ce, raising concerns over the legitimacy ofthe figures.V A full, comprehensive list containing the data canbe found at http://businesstech.co.za/news/general/93294/theworstcrimehotspotsinsouthafrica/#disqus_thread

Re. “Fireworks spark ire”, TB,15 July: That our councillorscan state that the beachfront isthe best option for fireworks issheer lunacy. For years theCity has been ignoring thecomplaints from beachfrontresidents and their requests tobe consulted on the selection ofthe fireworks site. Now we findthat the area does not evenmeet the City’s own require-ments (100m from roads, buildings and vehicles, 500mfrom fuel depot etc). Nowonder they did not want toengage with the residents.Additionally, the site is not

suitable for the control offireworks. In order to limit thefireworks to a prescribed areathe City requires 80-100 person-nel on duty, which they do nothave. At Guy Fawkes they usedthe services of over 60 Neigh-bourhood Watch members. However NHW have no autho-rity to control such events andare volunteers – why shouldthey give up hours of theirfamily time at New Year to trycontrol an event that is reallythe City’s responsibility? Thiswas clearly demonstrated atNew Year when the wholebeachfront was a chaos ofuncontrolled fireworks from19:00 to 02:00. Furthermore, noregard seems to be given topollution. The fireworks debrisis subject to wind and waveaction for hours before thecleaning crews arrive, bywhich time a large percentagehas polluted our ocean anddunes. Why does the City notlook for sites which can bemore easily controlled and arefurther away from residences, like Eerste Steen perhaps? Orwhat was wrong with TheoMarais? According to the sameCity document which citesrequirements for a fireworkssite, Theo Marais is notsuitable because of complaintsby the public! Really? If oneexamines the area around TheoMarais there are far fewer

In ’n onverwante voorval vroeër

Husband and wife duo Sam and Callawill launch their debut album at theBellville Civic Theatre next week.

The launch of Why did you take so longcomes shortly after Samantha and CallaHenn’s return from Johannesburg to attendthe SAMRO Wawela Music Awards wherethey were nominated alongside Blackbyrdand Mccully Workshop in the best South Af-rican duo/group category. Not bad for a group who have only been

producing original music since last year.Calla is one of four children and grew up

in a musical family. He performed with vari-ous original bands beforemeeting Samaboutfour years ago.Sam’s love affair with music started when

she took piano lessons in high school, but lifegot in thewayand she grewupand foundher-self with a day job.She was 23 when shemet Calla and the two

used to sing together at braais until he con-vinced her to join him on stage. She says theidea of being on stage with “all those people”looking at her was scary, but soon she wasworking through the day and singing atnight, until one day, she decided to focus onmusic.“I left my job and I haven’t been back

since.” That was three year ago, when Samand Call were known as Public Holiday.Within their first year together they won

a local battle of thebands competitionandgota contract to perform at a top hotel in Dubai. When they returned in June last year, they

decided it was time to focus on original mu-sic.

“I think it’s every musician’s dream to gettheir own music out there,” Sam says. They have since completed their album,

got their music on 37 local radio stations, gota music video on KykNET, charted on theBush Radio top 10 and played 13 shows in sixdays at the KKNK.At their launch on Tuesday 28 July they

will be joined by Edu Henn (drums), JasonVisagie (lead guitar), Vernoll Isaacs (key-board) and Sinjin Sauls (bass). The launchwill include performances by guest artistsJacques G and Warren Elliot.V Tickets for the launch cost R50 and or available viathe band’s Facebook page, from samandcal[email protected] or at the door.

Woensdag, 22 Julie 2015 SPORT TYGERBURGER Milnerton 19

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Tans is daarongeveer 60 spelers indiehele

dag tehouenonsnooi almal omtekomspeel.

Daaris nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok,

Danny Abrahams, remembered as oneof the best footballers in the countryduring the 1970s,will be sorelymissed.

He passed away in Ruyterwacht two weeksago at the age of 63.He had suffered fromAlzheimer’s Disease

for the past seven years and the cause of hisdeath is related to the disease. His career began in Elsies River at the lo-

cal St Augustine’s Club.It soon became apparent

that he was destined for great-er things. As a player he will be re-

membered as a genius whowas born with the ability tostamp his authority onmatch-es.With Cape Town Spurs he

enthralled crowds and it wasno surprise when he won theFederation Player of the YearAward in 1973.“My dad was a very loving

and humble man. He caredmore about other people thanabout himself,” says his son,Dean Abrahams. His long-time friend Ivan Jack also has

fond memories.“Danny was born to play, he had flair. We

as the soccer communitywill fondly remem-ber Danny also for the great family man andfriend he was off the pitch,” says Ivan.Ivan recalls the timewhen therewere seri-

ous talks of himgoing to play for Crystal Pal-ace to further his career.“But thenhis grandma fell ill andhedecid-

ed to rather take care of her.“He decided family was more important

than stardom. That really says a lot,” saysIvan.Danny’s friends and former players

started the Danny Abrahams Ex-Footbal-lers Fund to help those in need.“Danny was the start of the fund, but we

try and help as many old soccer players fi-nancially as we can.“The fund will continue to grow in hon-

our of Danny and we will continue to helpour friends who are struggling financial-
