    InearlyMarch,UCBPharmahostedthe1stUCLPartners-UCBPharmajointPhDprogrammeworkshop.ItwasattendedbyateamsteeredbyProfessorDavidAbraham(UCL)andProfessorMauroPerretti(QMUL).Themeetingofover60scientists from UCLPartners and UCB Pharma was chaired by Martin Procter (UCB Associate Director AcademicAlliances and Contracts) and Professor Tim Johnson (Director pre-clinical Fibrosis, Immunology TA) with anintroductionbyDrRayJupp(VPImmunologyResearch,UCB).

    The symposium showcased the broad biomedical research studies undertaken at UCL and QMUL within theUCLPartners Academic Medical Centre themes of Infection, Immunology and Inflammation (3Is) which is led byProfessorHansStauss. Researchthemescoveredatthesymposiumwerefocussedtowards inflammationbiology,chronicdiseases,tissuerepairandfibrosis.UCLPartnerssecuredprojectsfromboththeUCLInflammation,TissueRepair, Scarring and Fibrotic Diseases (FLARRE) consortium and the Centre for inflammation and TherapeuticInnovation(CiTI)atQMUL.

    SuccessfulproposalswillbedevelopedintoPhDprojectsthatwillbesupportedbyUCBPharma.DuringtheworkshopseniorUCBPIsprovidedanoverviewoftheresources,drugdiscoveryapproachesandtechnologiesavailabletothePhD studentships. The UCLPartners-UCB Pharma PhD programmewill run for four years and aims to train PhDstudentsinbiomedicineanddiscoveryscience,inadditiontoprovidingcriticalexposuretoanindustrialenvironmentandplatformtechnologies.

    The joint proposals between twoworld leading academic institutes (UCL andQMUL), and UCB Pharma, a globalbiopharmaceuticalcompanywithworld-classfacilitieswillprovideaparticularlyattractiveopportunityforhigh-calibrestudentstoobtainanappliedPhDandtoembarkuponaresearchcareer inbiomedicalsciences.Theschemealsoenhancesacademia-industrycollaborativeresearch.Trainingprovidedwithinthepartnershipwilldevelopskillsandtoolsneededtoprovidehighqualityresearchusinginnovativeapproachesandtechniques,promotingtranslationalsciencethatwillleadtolong-termpatientbenefit.
