From the Desk of the CEO

As Fall approaches, we enter a new season of progress at Valir. You’ve likely seen (and heard) the renovation happening on our patient oors, and the major demolition and construction occurring on the north side of Valir Rehabilitation Hospital. We are well into a 3-phase renovation project that will o er a beautiful new look to both the interior and exterior of our building, one that will create a warm and inviting atmosphere for patients and guests. The project will include amenities such as more than 50 private patient rooms and bathrooms with new furnishings

and technologies, private treatment rooms, specialty gyms, ADL training suite, bistro-style dining, complimentary patient and guest parking and much more. To better serve our patients, we’re adding additional services such as the newly opened Wound Care and Hyperbarics Clinic, and others including a radiology suite, pain management clinic, and a retail pharmacy. We’re moving in an upward direction, and I’m excited for the future of Valir! -Tom Tucker, Valir Corporate CEO

James Jones knows about being tough, as a former Marine he was trained to overcome obstacles, but ghting cancer isn’t a battle he was prepared for. He’s currently undergoing treatment for tongue cancer, and the sta at Valir Wound Care and Hyperbarics get to be a part of his recovery team. For nearly two months, medical director Timothy Hursh has had the opportunity to treat Mr. Jones in preparation for an upcoming procedure, and on July 20 he was able to move on to the next phase of healing, as Valir’s rst patient to receive Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, a process which enhances the body’s natural healing process by inhalation of 100%

oxygen in a total body chamber. “I love the caring sta and the interaction I receive during my treatment.”

As a retired football coach, with many of his players moving on to the NFL, he has a passion for the sport, and with the upcoming season upon us, he’s motived to progress with his treatment, and he knows Valir Wound Care and Hyperbarics will help him heal faster.

Valir has partnered with the online recruiting platform, Glassdoor as an e ective solution for recruiting and employer branding. This will allow potential candidates to see company reviews, CEO approval ratings, salary reports, interview reviews and

We encourage you to add your own reviews and ratings, get started by visiting glassdoor.com and typing “Valir Health” in the search bar. We value your feedback and appreciate the e orts to help Valir continue to attract top employees!

Employee Spotlight What do you enjoy most about your job at Valir? The people. Working with people that really care, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Furthest you’ve been from home: While in the service I had a 13 month tour in Japan and Vietnam. I kissed the ground when I landed back in the US!

What do you like to do on your free time? I love to watch movies. I love new ones and old ones, but my favorite is John Wayne’s The Fighting Kentuckian. On Tuesday nights at Harkins in Bricktown they play classic movies, it’s fun to see them on the big screen again.

What’s something that people don’t know about you? I like to make bows. I collect the wood myself and create bows for target practice.

What’s your favorite Valir memory? This place is full of them. Hearing the patients say that they’ve never been in a place like this (wipes the goosebumps from his arms). It’s the people, the friendliness, and the care, it’s hearing the people talk about their stay and hearing their praise.

Going for the Gold! While the world had their eyes on the action in Rio, Valir Hospice team members were competing in their own summer games with a lineup of sporting events such as Mouse Pad Discus, Rubber Band Shot Put, Pie Eating Race, Pencil Javelin, O ce Chair Dash, Sticky Note Slam and Paper Clip Chain.

“We think it’s important to have fun at work,” says Laura Trammell, vice president. “Hospice is very stressful, demanding and pulls on your heart strings on a daily basis. Sta need to be able to escape the daily grind and do things together that makes them laugh. . The Hospice Olympics was a chance for sta to get to know each other better and see one another outside of their hospice role. Fun games like this are great for building trust and teamwork among us all.”

No Boundries ExpoFor many participants the No Boundaries Expo can be life changing. It o ers the opportunity for individuals with spinal cord injuries to meet and learn from others with similar obstacles, explore more than 100 exhibitors, and participate in interactive demonstrations.

Valir not only was there as a resource, having both an informational booth and clinicians on site to answer questions, but Valir Rehabilitation Hospital also played a major role in the lives of current patients, providing both transportation and a guided tour of the event to help prepare them for life after discharge. “People with new spinal cord injuries will have such a huge adjustment to life. Going to events like this they’ll be able to see people that have been through similar experiences continue on to live independently, be successful and still enjoy life,” says Greg Welch, director of patient care services.
