FROM PYONGYANG TO
PYEONGCHANG AND BACK
On Thursday February 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium, Greg Scarlatoiu
will be back with this timely and important talk, providing an update and
analysis of economic, social, and political developments in North and South
Korea as well as U.S. Korean peninsula policy. Through merciless purges
and by concentrating resources on accelerating the nuclear and ballistic
missile programs, Kim Jong-un appears to have consolidated his grip on
power. On the surface, it appears that his policy, involving simultaneous
development of nuclear weapons and the economy, is working. But factors
eroding the regime's grip on power continue to coexist with forces that have
preserved it for nearly seven decades. South Korea President Moon is
seeking ways to create a 'new economic map of the Korean peninsula. As he
seeks ways to engage, Moon faces two major challenges: engaging North
Korea without undermining increasingly effective international sanctions
and overcoming North Korea efforts to drive a wedge between South Korea
and the US.
Greg Scarlatoiu is Executive Director Committee for Human Rights in
North Korea (HRNK), was educated in South Korea and is sought for
information and advice by Congress, State Dept., and the UN.

the way. In 1991, when war broke out in Ethiopia, they fled to Kenya.
Nathaniel Nyak was 8 years old when he began his journey to safety. Yar
Garang was 7 years old when her mother and siblings their walked to
freedom.
By now most of you know Yar who currently works as a server at Goodwin House. Her husband Nathaniel

ASH WEDNESDAY
The Season of Lent begins in less than a month, with Ash Wednesday falling on Wednesday, February 14.
The community Ash Wednesday service will be at 10:00 a.m. It will include the Ash Wednesday liturgy,
Holy Eucharist, music, and the imposition of ashes. Those who wish the imposition of ashes but are unable
to attend the service may contact Chaplain Theresa (x-7224) to arrange an apartment (or department) visit.
She also will walk through the Health Care Center immediately after the service and through the major
departments to catch interested residents and employees as she can. She also will be available in the Chapel
of All Saints from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. for those who wish to stop by the Chapel.
CHOCOLAT FILM
Last year, the Spiritual Life Committee sponsored a viewing
of the movie Chocolat, followed by discussion, early in
the Season of Lent. It is a movie set in Lent after all! This
year's viewing and discussion, again facilitated by Chaplain
Theresa Brion, is scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, at 2:00
p.m., in the Media Room. All are welcome to attend the
viewing and/or the discussion immediately thereafter. Join
others in the community as we explore Lent
and transformation, as well as detect the film's
many Christian and other symbols.
COMMUNITY CORNER
Palliative care is readily available to all of us right here at GHBC but do you understand
what it is all about? It is a medical consultant program that helps you or a loved one find
relief if you are dealing with the symptoms and stress of any kind of serious illness. The
palliative care service is provided exclusively to Goodwin House residents at both
facilities and is coordinated by Beth Klint, RN, who works with your physicians to provide an extra layer
of support. It can help you carry on with your daily life. It helps you to better understand your condition
and your choices for medical care. You can experience relief from symptoms such as pain, shortness of
breath, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, constipation, and difficulty sleeping. In short, palliative care
coordinates with all the other services at Goodwin House to help you find the best quality of life. One
common misunderstanding is that you have to qualify for hospice care in order to participate in palliative
care. Not true… you don’t have to have a terminal illness to qualify for palliative care.
The palliative care service here puts Goodwin House on the cutting edge of health care since most CCRC’s
do not provide this! Our palliative care staff is totally competent and very caring. We have much for
which to be grateful and proud! For more information, call the Palliative Care and Hospice office at 703
578-7108.

be more user friendly and to increase the accuracy of reporting. Please let me know if you have any ques-
tions. Forms are available in the Resident Business Center and near the Volunteer Coordinator desk (on the
