Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

As of the time of this writing, we have not yet arrived at election day, nor, of course, do we know the results. Perhaps by the time we read this on Sunday the results will be known. Nevertheless, regardless of the re-sults of the election, what we need now is unity. The first word of the name of our great nation is “United.” It defines and describes who we are. Unlike most other nations of the world, we do not all share the same ethnic roots or the same origins. We are all very dif-ferent, and yet there is so much that make us alike. This is well described by one of our na-tion’s mottos: e pluribus unum; out of many, one. We have been through (and continue to endure) quite an ordeal together in this past year: the coronavirus pandemic; the sad re-alization that, even more than 150 years after the end of slavery, some of our brothers and sisters of color still feel like their voices and their lives do not matter; this tense political cycle, which has focused almost entirely on negativity at every level; the inability to visit with family and friends in ways that we have enjoyed in the past; the cancellation of so many events and trips (my own trip to Eu-rope that was scheduled for this week was cancelled many months ago). Even though all of this has been difficult, we remain a peo-ple of hope. We hope for a cure, we hope for peace, we hope for acceptance and love, we hope for a return to normalcy, we hope for a time to gather together again, we hope to be one again. No matter what shuts down, no matter who our elected officials are, no mat-ter what else they cancel, they cannot take away our hope. We are better together—we can do better together. Therefore, no matter the results of the past election, let us join to-gether as one nation, under God, to do the work of God and to make His Kingdom come.

We welcome among us today Sister Mary Mc-Cormick, General Superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Sr. Mary is also my cousin—her mother and my grandmother were sisters—so it is a special joy to welcome

her to be with us today. In addition to her work as the superior of her community, she teaches at St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland where the majority of our diocesan seminar-ians attend. As the superior of her congre-gation, Sister Mary knows well the needs of the retired sisters in religious communities throughout our country, who have dedicated their lives to service of God in His Church. Our parishes have benefited greatly over many years from the good work of Religious Sisters, in particular from the Sisters of the Humil-ity of Mary and the Sisters of Notre Dame. I thank you in advance for your generous re-sponse to this appeal, in support of the great women and men who have generously given their lives in service to us all.

Finally, our sympathies and prayers are with the family and friends of David Rohr who was buried recently from Saint Peter Church. May the Lord, in His mercy and love, welcome him to heaven, even as He provides comfort and consolation to those who mourn his passing.

The preschool program has been working hard this month! The month of October we have

spent learning about apples and pumpkins. We are very thankful for Ms. Rood’s garden outside our

windows because we are able to see the vines, flowers and pumpkins on the plant! We have also

been busy counting and learning the alphabet.

This month the in Kindergarten, we are working on our blending skills, while reading

short stories. We are working on comparing numbers 1-10 and using ten frames to represent

numbers. We are also working on beginning sounds and our alphabet recognition skills.

In 1 st grade we have been working on letter blends, focusing on decoding and spelling words with

R-blends, L-blends, and S-blends. We are also learning to utilize strategies that help us read words

that may be unfamiliar to us. In math we are learning strategies to help us add and subtract. In

religion, we have been learning about blessings and praise and how both apply to our relationship

with God.

In second grade we are learning how dictionaries help us find

information. We discussed the process on how to scan pages and find

words we want. Students found it interesting that there were more

than one meaning for many words! We are excited to expand our word

knowledge and to add more meaning to each word we come across!

The fifth graders were in the

Halloween spirit as they participated

in a pumpkin decorating contest. The

Third grade completed their first science project this month! We learned about chemical

reactions by making volcanoes with vinegar and baking soda. We also used the experiment to help

us learn the scientific method. We had a lot of fun with this project.

The fourth grade had a very busy month! The children spent time picking the remaining

pumpkins, gourds, and squash from our school garden. Each child painted a pumpkin to take home.

The class is studying the sacrament of Baptism. We had a visit from Father Sheridan who talked to

the children about Jesus, when he was a child. In social studies we are learning about the first

people to live in Ohio.

CCD Program (K-8th Grade)

CCD Mass: The youth will be participat-ing in the CCD Mass scheduled for Sun-day, November 15, 2020 at 10:30 AM at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.

Youth Sacramental Preparation

2020 First Communion Candidates: The 2020 First Holy Communion Group Mass has been rescheduled for Sunday, Novem-ber 15, 2020 during the 10:30 AM Mass at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.

Confirmation Formation for 8th Graders: The next mandatory Confirmation Formation session for youth in 8th grade hoping to receive Confirmation in the Spring is on Saturday, November 7, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the St. Peter Parish Hall. A parent or spon-sor must attend along with the candidate.

Adult Faith Formation

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA): Persons interested in becoming Catholic are welcome to participate in our RCIA Program. Through communal prayer, study, and discussion, participants willlearn about the teachings and practices of the Catholic Faith. If you are interested in joining the Catholic Church, please contact Mollie Kulig.

Bible Study: Our Bible Study is open to all and will meet again starting on Thurs-day, November 19, 2020 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM in the Gallagher Center at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. In addi-tion to discussing the upcoming Gospel, we will begin examining Chapter 10 from The Letter to the Romans. All are welcome!

Faustina Sessions: Our next monthly Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska session will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the St. Peter Parish Hall. We will be discussing Notebook III and IV.

Book Club: Sessions will begin again on Thursday, November 12, 2020 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the St. Peter Parish Hall. We will be reading The Spear by Louis de Wohl and will be discussing Book I Chapter 1 through Book I Chapter VI. All are welcome!
