  • What is CAS?"• Core of the DP - one of three essential elements in every student’s DP experience !• Enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through learning by doing and reflecting upon the experience !• Holistic - emotional and physical well-being !• A collection of meaningful experiences that students select, engage in, and reflect upon !

  • What is CAS?"CREATIVITY - broad, being artistic, being experimental/original in planning, design and creation. !!ACTION - activities where physical effort is a core necessity and a specific focus. !!SERVICE - Community Engagement. Activities with an environmental, community development or educational theme, either within the school community or the community at large. Some of these activities provide an opportunity to address global issues. !

    • An appropriate adult supervisor - has knowledge/experience to guide the student!• Not necessarily DC staff!• Not parents !• Some activities - documentation is enough !• Complete supervisor review (Managebac)!• Students should discuss their involvement with supervisor before submitting approval form !

    • Support understanding of the programme!• Encourage active engagement/participation!• Approve activities (Managebac)!• Monitor participation (Managebac)!• Review reflections (Managebac)!• Make judgments about student achievements!• Communicate progress with parents as required!

  • When is Enough Enough?"• No fixed benchmark or measure.!• Qualitative rather than quantitative. !• Using quantitative measures (hours or points) to evaluate individual programmes often leads to a focus on the measure itself (“how many hours do I need to do?”), with the quality of the student engagement and what the outcomes of their involvement taking a back seat.!• Quality rather than Quantity!• CAS Advisors use their professional judgment (guided by provided documents) in reporting on student involvement!

    Hoops of Hope is the biggest basketball shoot-a-thon in the world; has raised over $2.5 million over 10 years; AIDS orphans benefit with access to food, clothing, shelter, a new school, four dormitories,  a computer lab, teacher houses, and two medical testing facilities!
