In July 2011, The African Tulip hotel together with Roy safaris was proud to host, Dr. Jane Goodall, the world re-known

primatologist and founder of The Jane Goodall Institute. Her visit was to mark the 50th anniversary of her charismatic

research of wild Chimpanzee in their natural habitats in Gombe stream National Park. Many events were organized in

Arusha including visits to various schools hosting roots n shoots programs as well as the inspirational screening of

"Jane's journey".

Dr Goodall was accompanied by Researcher Dr Anthony Collins as well as Roots N shoots Program coordinator, Mr

Japhet Jonas Mwanang`ombe who stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights.

Dr. Goodall and her team were specifically in Arusha to promote the Roots and Shoots program, which is currently

instilled in many schools in Arusha region as well as throughout Tanzania and in over 100 countries around the world.

This program was started by Dr Jane Goodall herself, who strongly believes that the youth, wherever in the world they

may be, can bring about lasting change and make the world a better place for future generations.

Roots and Shoots is an extracurricular activity for school children and young adults, which brings much needed

awareness and promotes proactive problem solving skills. Projects can be divided into three main categories: Issues

affecting people and communities, issues affecting animals and wildlife, and issues affecting the environment. Since its

inception over 20 years ago, the program has received thousands of reports from around the world documenting how

young people have made changes in their communities.

The African Tulip organized a small, informal, Canapé & Cocktail event where in-house guests as well as Some Arusha

residents (who were fortunate to book quickly enough) got an amazing opportunity to hear Dr Jane Goodall and to have

a one-to-one talk with her and have books signed by Dr Jane Goodall at the hotels’ Zanzibar lounge. So inspiring was her

talk that the question session that followed revealed a lot of interesting facts…

.....We would also like to sincerely thank Mr. Sanjay Pandit, Director of Roy Safaris, and his wonderful wife Susan for their generosity,

hospitality and support to Dr. Jane and the work of the Jane Goodall Institute. They graciously hosted Dr. Jane, myself and Dr. Anthon while

we were in Arusha, in addition to organizing the opportunity for Jane to give an informal talk. This talk was a fascinating moment for Jane
