Background

• Operating rooms produce up to 30% of the total daily

hospital waste [1]

• Around 80% of clinical hospital waste could be disposed of

as general waste [2]

• Of the general OT waste approximately 70% is potentially

recyclable [3-7]

• No waste segregation or recycling existent in central OT

complex at tertiary hospital

• 7 to 1 cost difference between clinical waste and general

waste disposal

Aim

• To introduce waste segregation and recycling to the

Operating Theatre complex at a tertiary hospital

• reduce the amount of clinical waste

• reduce cost for disposing of waste

• reduce the carbon footprint

Methods

1. Establishing baseline by measuring over a 4-week period the amount of waste produced by OTs.

2. Basic waste segregation by collecting clinical waste and general waste in separate containers as per hospital waste management guidelines and measuring it over a 4-week period [9].

3. Refined waste segregation by collecting recyclable cardboard, Kimguard® and hard, clean plastics in separate containers and measuring it over a 4-week period.

4. Categorised determination of waste weight and corresponding disposal costs.

From 21 operating theatres at central OT complex of 780 bed tertiary hospital with 22,000 surgeries/year.
