IREC (Catalunya Institute for Energy Research)Involved in LED4ART

    The illumination of art

    certainly belongs to one

    of the most ambitious

    tasks in interior lighting

    with respect to

    requirements towards

    the light quality. Thus in

    many museums today,

    the existing lighting

installations lack energy efficiency as it is consideredless important compared to lighting quality or

design. In this pilot project a consortium of 6

partners, including EPIC member IREC, from 5

countries plan to demonstrate and prove that both,

a superior light quality and high energy efficiency,

can be realized. This goal will be reached by

replacing the existing illumination system of the

Sistine Chapelby latest LED illumination systems

    developed especially for art.www.led4art.eu

ficonTEC now provides a thermocompressiondie bonder as well as a semi-automatic table-

    top die bonder

The number of upcoming applications in the broad

area of micro assembly tasks which are or need to

be automated is rapidly increasing. Within, the

larger variety of handled components, bond

materials, and most importantly assembly processes

call for new and innovative tools. To serve that

demand ficonTEC released two brand new products.

The BL100 is a eutectic die bonder which expands

ficonTEC's die bonder product family to the more

manually operated side. The table-top BL100 utilizes

a split optic and semi-automated subroutines for

the operator to manually adjust while reaching high

precision thermal bonds. The die bonder is the ideal

tool for lower throughput productions or for R&D.

    Innolume announces next generation of

    Quantum Dot based LD-12XX-series laser

diodeKeeping output characteristics the same - 350mW

kink-free output power and Fiber Bragg Grating

stabilized spectrum in 1180nm up to 1270nm

wavelength range, new LD-12XX-series lasers has

    substantially improved wall-plug efficiency.

The main differentiation compared to the previous

generation is a higher operating temperature of the

laser chip which allowed shifting the maximum ofwall-plug efficiency to higher environment

temperatures. As a result, the wall-plug efficiency of

the butterfly packaged laser including TEC (thermo-

electric cooler) exceeds 16% at 40C case

temperature which is typical for the environment in

PON equipment racks and by that leading to a

    significant reduction of power consumption.

This optimization supports our customers in further

improving of their products already introduced to

the market, says Guido Vogel, Managing Director

of Innolume, and by that bring even more benefitsof Raman based GPON Reach Extension to network

    operators compared to conventional Reach

Analysis and Study - Value Chain Mapping of

EPIC membersThis report has been written by Thierry Robin and

Jacques Cochard of Tematys Consulting with the

goal of mapping EPIC members positioning and

    statistical analysis of EPIC members.

Worldwide Market Statistic DataEvery year the International Optoelectronics

Association meets to share market data for

photonics from Asia, North America and Europe.

The result is an unusually complete view of

    photonics commercial markets world-wide. Reports

from Japan and Taiwan underlined the slow-down

due to the flat-panel display market that drives

photonics activities in Asia. Contact us to receive

the presentations which all contain valuableintelligence! Material from Canada, Europe,

Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, UK , USA.

LED Manufacturing and Market ReportThis report has been written by YOLE

Dveloppement with the help of EPIC members and

presents a detailed analysis of front-end LED

    manufacturing processes, equipment and design

trends. Each report contains over 300 slides of

    valuable and up-to-date data.

The LED report are available to EPIC members as

    part of their membership benefits.

Photovoltaic ReportPhotovoltaic industry revenues reached a record

    $US 93 billion in 2011, a 13.4% increase over $US 82

billion in 2010, and a 150% increase over revenues

in 2009. World-wide, 27.4 Gwatts of PV were

installed, bringing cumulative PV electricalgeneration capacity to 68 Gwatts at the end of

2011. Our data show that installations grew by 56%

compared to 2010. Europe remains the leader for

deployment, accounting for more than 63% of the

    PV installations world-wide. These percentage

figures are lower than those for 2010, and they

indicate the growing importance of PV markets

outside of Europe, and in particular in China.

For the first time ever, more PV generating power

was installed in Europe than any other energy

source, surpassing both natural gas and windturbine generation.

In terms of production, inventories at the end of

2011 amounted to less than 1 month. Our figure ofmerit, (the ratio of total sector revenues to installed

PV generation capacity) for 2011 improved

significantly to US$3.53 per watt by 24% compared

to US$4.6 per watt in 2010. PV production volume is

now dominated by manufacturing in Asia where

China and Taiwan now account for about 74% of the

world supply. Production by European companies

declined sharply in 2011 to less that 6% of the

    global total.

The EPIC Photovoltaic Report is is available to EPICmembers as part of their membership benefits.

17th meeting of the International Optoelectronics

Association in Yokohama. The next meeting will take place in

Brussels in conjunction with EPICs 10th Anniversary event

    on 13 December 2013.

More than 40 Gwatts of new electrical energy installations were

completed in Europe in 2011. Photovoltaic power was the leading

product. Renewables account for 67% of the total mix.

EPIC and the IBBT of Ghent University presented the

Symposium on Energy Consumption of the Internet

at ECOC 2012. The presentations and panel

discussion quantified the energy footprint of

different components of the network: local access,

core networks, data centers and user equipment.

Electrical power consumption is not directly

proportional to the level of traffic. While traffic

growth is increasing at the current time at about

40% per year, electrical power consumption is rising

at a rate of about 9% per year, according to a study

presented by Mario Pickavet of IBBT. Electrical

power resources, however are increasing at a far

smaller rate, about 3% per year. At the present

time, the internet consumes about 5% of world

electricity generation. Paolo Frankl, director of

renewable energies at the International Energy

Agency emphasised the need to develop new

green energy sources in the electricity mix, noting

that more photovoltaic power was installed in

Europe in 2011 than from any other source.

Presentations from systems provider Ericsson and

network operator France Telecom described efforts

to lower energy consumption through installation of

systems that can be dynamically reconfigured,

allowing some parts of the network to be shut down

during lower traffic periods. Early retirement of

legacy equipment will also accelerate reductions inconsumption. Results from the Eu project TREND

    (http://www.fp7-trend.eu) showed that the

electrical consumption of the core network is

dependent on the level of traffic, and this would be

the best place to implement such innovations. The

access network power consumption, on the other

hand is not as strongly affected by the level of

traffic. Peter Vetter presented the Green Touch

consortium which has been formed by Alcatel-

Lucent to focus on energy-saving strategies.

During the panel discussion, it was learned that

figures from energy consumption due to datacentertraffic are probably understated, because most of

the available data predate the explosive growth in

    cloud-computing and video transmission. However,

based on current trends, the power consumption of

the internet should rise from 5% of total resources

today to 8% of total electrical power generation by

    2020.

The exhibition at the European Conference on

Optical Communications took place in Amsterdam

17-19 September 2012. Participation was up from

last year with 329 companies and organisations

making up the show. Twelve EPIC member

companies exhibited new products and services:Aifotec, Fiber Optics, Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-

    Institut, Innolume, Oclaro, OpticsValley, Photonics

    Bretagne, 3S Photonics, Time-Bandwidth Products,

u2t Photonics, Vertilas, and Yenista Optics. More

than 5500 people visited the exhibition over the 3-

    day period.

    Yenista Optics presented

    new tuneable lasers and

    filters The TUNICS high-

    power T100S-HP/CL laser

provides an outputpower of at least 10 dBm

    over the whole tuning

    range from 1500 to 1630

    nm. The demo by

    Etienne Decerle that I

    saw was doing quite a

bit better. It guarantees a signal to source

spontaneous emission ratio (SSSER) higher than 90

dB. Important innovations in the lasers external

cavity design have been implemented, enabling

significant increase in the output power andstability without any compromise on other

    specifications.

    Yenistas XTM-50/W and XTA-50/W wide

bandwidth filters increase the maximum achievable

bandwidth to 3 nm. The bandwidth is adjustable

from 50 pm (6.25 GHz) to 3000 pm (375 GHz) with

very sharp filter edges (500 dB/nm). The filters

cover the 1520 to 1570 nm wavelength range and

have an insertion loss of less than 5 dB in

combination with a top flatness of 0.2 dB.

    The Fraunhofer HHI

    team demonstrated a

    hybrid InP-polymer

    tuneable DBR laser. The

    DBR tunes 34 nm across

    the C-band using a

    thermally tuneable

    polymer grating.

    Output power is larger

    than 8 mW. Direct

    modulation at 10 Gbit/s

shows an open eye diagram. The hybrid laser

    consists of a curved-stripe InP-based gain chip and a

    waveguide integrated thermo-optically tuneable

polymer Bragg grating using HHIs PolyBoard

    integration platform.

    The Market Focus

    sessions, sponsored by

    Oclaro with 1700 people

    attending the seminar

    series. Presentations

    from HHI on photonic

    integration and from

    Oclaro on solutions for

    100 Gbit/s transmission

were among the highlights. Oclaro used the

occasion to introduce its new logo, following the

merger with Opnext on their stand which was the

    centrepiece for the ECOC Show.

    There was a significant

    presence of companies

    from China in the

    exhibition. Overall about

    15% of the exhibition

    represented Asia-based

    companies. The

    products on display in

    the Chinese Pavillion are

both more complex and cover a wider range of

functionality that those proposed in previous years. The organisation under a national banner gave a

    new dimension to these offerings.

As industry association we advocate for a regulatory

environment that benefits our industrys interest.

For instance we held 2 meetings with the European

Commission on the topic of REACH and InP and

GaAs. But there is also a need to spread the

message within industry and the general public. With the support of our members EPIC has been

quite active in recent months communicating on the

needs and potential of Photonics related

    technologies. Market expansion, and promoting

    further applications of photonics related

technologies is one of the major benefits that EPIC

as an industry association can bring to its member

and industry at large. We signed an MoU in Korea

with international organizations, and joined Jury

Panel of ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100 in

China. Public appearances include: Keynote presentation at Electronics Goes

    Green Blue Semiconductors and Photonics
