LINGUISTIC
This is the domain of writers and deals with not only
the functions of grammar, but the feeling associated
with works of poetry. Students strong in this
intelligence write the scripts and take care of
advertising. It helps if they have a sense of flair for
the theatrical in the delivery of speech though
introspective writers are just as respected in drama.
MUSICAL
This is the realm of sound and song which plays a
special role in movies and theater alike. Not only
does a production benefit from the accompaniment
of instruments and background sounds to provide
atmosphere, the sense of rhythm and pitch benefits
an actor when delivering lines with affectation.
Students with this strength will become sound
technicians, singers, and musicians.
LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL
Although not as easy to perceive from the audience’s
perspective, Logical-Mathematical intelligence
benefits the realm of management, scheduling,
budgeting, set-design, and any other department in
which accuracy and planning are crucial. Admittedly,
those who work in the production office will often be
at odds with the creative minds on the stage, but the
show would not go on without people to manage the
numbers.
SPATIAL
Those with strength in Spatial Reasoning will find a
place working with the stage itself. Set-design,
directing, and dance choreography are some such
areas because they require an innate knowledge of
how best to make use of elements such as relative
distance and the angle of the audience’s view.
INTRAPERSONAL
This intelligence is crucial for actors and writers as
it deals with their ability to get in touch with that
part of the human mind that is illusive to the average
audience member, the identity. The writer must be in
touch with his feelings and opinions to be able to
express them on the script while the actor must
know how to tap the feelings which will make him
appear genuinely happy, sad, terrified, or enraged on
stage.
NATURALISTIC
Naturalistic intelligence is often associated with an
awareness of environment, balance, and categories.
In the theater, this is best-used by the director who
must coordinate the visual and sound elements on
stage in order to create the illusion which allows for
the willing suspension of disbelief in the audience.
INTERPERSONAL
A theatrical production is the product of many varied
talents coming together. This means that it benefits
everyone involved in the production to be able to
work well with others. However, the jobs of the
producer, director, choreographer, and office
manager specifically require this ability. It can also
be argued that people who slave over a production
will develop interpersonal skill if they didn’t have it
before.
BODILY-KINESTHETIC
The use of body language is primarily the skill of the
actor and those involved in dance. Although athletic
skill does help an actor, there are many more subtle
levels of movement such as facial ticks, gestures,
and even location which can alter a performance
dramatically! This also involves physical fitness and
a healthy lifestyle.
BASIC TECH STUFF TO KNOW
Theater equipment can range from a simple lighting board setup
to computer driven spotlights. Know what you have available.
When investing in a Digital camera:• FPS refers to frames per second• DPI refers to dots per inch• SLR refers to single-lens reflex
Quality lighting will carry you farther than resolution as far as
video quality goes.
The greatest sound equipment will do no good if you don’t know
how it will respond to the environment of the shotTABLE OF
