THE BV, STILL PROVIDING HOTWATER TO THETROOPS AND NOWCOOLS AS WELL

The BV (boiler vessel) is well known throughoutthe British Forces as it has been proving troopsin vehicles, of all shapes and sizes, withcontinuous hot water for brewing up or cookingrash packs. It has been called the moralebooster, amongst other things, and its ruggeddesign has meant that it has beenaccompanying troops in theatres across the

world for many decades in the Challenger,Foxhound, Scorpion, and the Jackal, to namebut a few.

It draws its power from the vehicle whichmeans there is no need to stop to take a muchneeded rehydration break, which could make

vehicles and troops vulnerable to attack andslow the mission. Excellent insulation meansthat it keeps water hot for hours, the outside iscool to touch and it has a very low thermalimage.

The company, Electrothermal, that firstdesigned the BV, in conjunction with the MOD

back in the 1980’s, and it is estimated that thereare over 20,000 deployed today. Recently thisinnovative company has taken a step forwardand developed the cooled BV! Not only doesthis device provide the same heated water andrash pack solutions as the original BV, it now alsohas the capacity to deliver cooled water on

demand! It cools at 1°C per minute to 20°Cbelow the ambient temperature, so can deliverthe troops cooled water during those hot drivesand deployment . . . and then as the ambienttemperature dives, it can simply be switched toheat and it will provide heated water for drinksor for chow.

J Series Side MountedLarge Screen Display

SystemsThis quarter’s featured product is the JSeries Side Mounted Large Screen DisplaySystem. It is the newest addition to theDRASH Deployable Command and ControlEquipment.

The purpose of the J Series Side MountedLarge Screen Display System is to increasemobility throughout DRASH shelters byeliminating the need to set up DC2E alongthe shelters' width. Instead, the new Side

Display System posts on the shelters'length. Such a design enables personneland equipment to move freely throughoutthe length of a DRASH shelter withoutrestriction. The new design also allowsmilitary personnel to connect variousshelters as needed to increase the size ofthe overall system.

Rapid Military Deployable Shelter SystemsDRASH Deployable Rapid AssemblyShelters are the epitome of quick andefficient soft walled technology. Superiorprotective elements and reliable featuresare what make these shelters so functionaland unique. All shelters are rapidlydeployable and structured with anadvanced, highly flexible compositematerial called Titanite®. The shelter’sframe is comprised of pairs of Titanite®

struts that connect at key points in theframework called hubs. These hubs allowfor rapid deployment, as they enable theentire shelter to be pushed up and outswiftly without additional assembly. Theshelter comes pre-attached with a doublelayer of Xytex, a high-tech fabric thatprovides insulation from hot and coldtemperatures. The specially coated fabricis fire retardant, water repellant andresistant to mildew, abrasion andultraviolet rays.

DRASH Shelters come in a variety of sizesand divide into separate categoriesaccording to their width. Beginning withthe smallest C Series shelter, at 109 squareft. (2.3 meters) and ending with the largestJ Series shelter, at 1,250 square ft. (116meters), the range in size accommodates adiversity of client needs. In addition, everyshelter is easily connectable to any othershelter regardless of the series or model.A key component to the DRASH ShelterSystem is the Utility Support Trailer (UST).A UST is an integrated support systemdesigned to provide mobility, power andor environmental control for all DRASHshelters. USTs come in various models,tailoring to the energy needs of everymission. Depending on the model, a USTcomes equipped with a generator and/orECU. Models that are equipped with ECUsenable the shelters to function in harshclimates. Some trailers incorporate a newenergy efficient Intelligent PowerTechnology (IPT), while other trailers havetraditional analog systems. All trailers areoperable in rough terrain, and are easilytowable by military vehicles.

Every element within a DRASH ShelterSystem has undergone rigorous testing tomeet all Military Standard Requirements.

Intelligent PowerTechnology™ - IPTInterconnectableTrailer-Mounted

GeneratorsIntelligent Power Technology (IPT) is areflection of DHS’s effort toward creatingenergy efficient products. The DRASH IPTenables users to interconnect varioustrailer-mounted generators to form amicro grid of networked power.

When activated, each generator respondsto real time power demands. The systemis self-adjusting but users have the abilityto monitor activity from inside the TacticalOperations Center. Because IPT respondsto the user’s power needs, it eliminateswasted energy expenditure in unoccupiedareas of the shelter. Having, IPT reducesunused energy, which ultimately minimizesunnecessary fuel costs.

DeployableCommand and

Control Equipment(DC2E)

DRASH Deployable Command and ControlEquipment (DC2E) encompasses projectorsystems, audio visual switching systemsand system accessories , all designed tofacilitate information management on thebattlefield.

DC2E equipment is portable andlightweight so setting up and dismantlingrequires minimal time and few personnel.Front/Rear Projection Systems areavailable with Medium, Large, and nowSide Mounted Screen Displays. AudioVisual Systems include Mini, Small,Medium and Large variants. An IntelligentData Distribution System, MicrophoneSystem, Clock System, IPT RemoteMonitor and Tactical Utility Field Furnitureare additional accessories that completethe DC2E line.

Many NATO forces currently issue hexaminefuel to their troops for cooking in the field andare looking to move to a replacement fuel dueto the dangers that hexamine presents to thehealth of soldiers. Hexamine is a potentiallydangerous and outdated substance; burning itgives off cyanide. Headquartered in Cardiff, BCBInternational Ltd, believe that their alcohol-based alternative fuel, ‘FireDragon’, will provepopular with soldiers on patrol who need to

heat up their rations quickly without producingand inhaling toxic fumes.

Announcing the start of production, BCB’sManaging Director, Andrew Howell said: “Overthe last five years, we have been developing agreen and clean solid biofuel made fromethanol called ‘FireDragon’. I am happy toannounce that after extensive research and pre-production trials, the eagerly awaited fuel isnow in production.

“The launch of the fuel is good news for ourtroops. It will enable soldiers to cook theirmeals and make their brews with a safer andcleaner fuel than traditional military rations fuelblocks like hexamine. Our fuel is non-toxic, non-drip and made from 100% natural ingredients,including ethanol sourced from UK grown grainstocks. The FireDragon fuel can be packed withrations and doubles as a waterless hand sanitiser

which will help Militaries reduce their logisticsand medical costs.”

Mr. Howell went on to explain how the fuel ismore than a match for similar alternative fuels:“One tablet of FireDragon fuel (27 grams) canboil 500 ml of water in 5-6 minutes; that’s atleast two minutes faster than competitors’products. It can even be ignited whilst wet,something unique to FireDragon.

“Wherever they operate, whether in driving rain,the freezing arctic or searing heat, the fuel willenable soldiers to heat their rations right wherethey need them.”

based troops with extra capabilityenhancements in operations, such as ‘manin the loop’ for anti-surface missiles.

Major upgrades to Pico1024E GenII consistof higher thermal sensitivity of lower than50mK, offering 15 per cent additionalthermal sensitivity over the previousgeneration.

Thermal sensitivity is a key parameter forindicating the image accuracy and visibledetails provided over a measurabledistance, in this case up to 5km to detecta tank.

Other upgrades include a frame ratefrequency of more than 100Hz for fasttarget tracking. This is close to double theframe rate frequency for this category ofmegapixel thermal image sensor.Significant progress has been made onlowering the power consumption of ULIS’devices, down to 200mW, whereascompeting products require two to threetimes more electrical power.

environment both within the vehicle and

The design has been proven in a

and other tests against UK MOD Defence

Standards. The Type Testing programme
