Siemens Transportation Group Inc., going the extra mile.

Our business began with one truck travelling the SK highway between Saskatoon and Kindersley. Today, 52 years later, we are an international logistics company that offers everything from courier to heavy haul, and everything in between. This vast and unique array of service offerings allows us to provide you, our customer, with a service and solution to almost every transportation need that may arise.

The scope of our business stems from years of strategic planning, overcoming tough times, maintaining our family values and forging strong bonds with outstand-ing employees, customers and vendors. We have been proud of our history and all that has been accomplished, and as we honour the past, we also look forward to the future.

The Siemens Transportation Group is pleased to add the next milestone to our journey… a refreshed logo that provides a unified look and feel. Our new corporate logo reflects where we are today while still retaining core elements of the child brands; each one carries a rich history within our company.

For more than half a century we’ve grown our family of companies. Now, we’re moving forward together with a cohesive look and approach to our business. For transportation, storage and logistics that go the extra mile, count on us.

6 November / December 2014

Well, it’s time for the next addition of Driver’s Choice Magazine.

We hope everyone had a safe and unevent-ful summer. The days of summer are ticking by and we are getting closer to the end of 2014 that dreaded time of year, winter. It seems like only yes-terday we were complaining about the volume of tourists on the highway, sightseeing and holding up traffic. In the near future we will have new con-cerns: ice, snow and bad weather. Don’t lose your cool, this year let’s plan ahead, and refresh your winter driving skills in advance, before the weath-er hits. Let’s be prepared and not get caught off guard when we know in advance that those road conditions are coming. We must remind ourselves to slow down, increase our following distances, slow when cornering and be prepared to shut down in the event of unfavourable road condi-tions or weather. Let’s have a safe and uneventful winter!

On the lighter side we would like to invite you to visit www.driverschoicemagazine.com for the latest employment postings; find your perfect employee or employer. Check it out.

With 2014 coming to a close, we look forward to the prospects of 2015, and with that thought in mind, the management and staff of Driver’s Choice would like to extend our best wishes for the season to all our clients and readers.

“Plan ahead and have a safe holiday season”

12 November / December 2014

I decided to write an article for this issue about the importance of seeing your

doctor regularly and openly discussing your health problems with those that care about us.

I drove truck for many years. The first 10 years or so I drove single in Canada and I managed to keep myself fairly healthy. I got time to exercise while my load was blowing off or while I was waiting at the shipper/receiver to have my trailer loaded or unloaded.

Eventually I was talked into running team and although I enjoyed helping new drivers learn about the trucking business I found it was very hard on my body. I did not sleep right because I was always training and therefore always kept one eye open in case some situation came up that I was needed for. As a typical team we were always in a rush and never had time for exercise or eating properly. Most days we would grab a meal at a fast food franchise but occasionally we took the time to pig out at a buffet. Neither of these options was good for me as the buffet had healthy options but I was a meat and potato kind of person and I also liked my desserts. I had kept my weight around 165-170 for many years but I found it slowly going up. One day I was at the terminal in Toronto and I happened to step on the scale on the dock. I was horrified when it read over 300 lbs.

At that time I also noticed that I was falling asleep all the time, especially after a big meal. If it was my turn to drive I had to fight the desire to sleep. I also noticed my legs turning brown and I was always short of breath. It got so bad that I eventually decided to give up driving and I went into

the office. I found that I would be working at my desk, fall asleep, and then wake up and carry on with what I was doing. I did not notice this but people around me kept mentioning it. I also found that when I got into my truck I had to rest, then, after I put on the seat belt I had to rest again.

It got so bad that when I went to the doctor he immediately put me into a wheel-chair and had his nurse take me across the street to the hospital. They said that my oxygen in my blood was down to 43 % and that it should be over 97%. They also did some tests and said I had diabetes and that I would be on pills and oxygen for the rest of my life. I was given a CPAP machine as well as a machine to take the oxygen out of the air and let me breathe straight oxygen. Somehow I managed to recover from this to a degree and now I only use the CPAP at night and have no need for straight oxygen.

By watching my diet and trying to exercise along with the pills I managed to control my diabetes for a number of years. Eventually I built up a resistance to the pills and was put on insulin as well. My legs slowly returned to a normal color although I still have some brown areas. I found out this was caused by a lack of circulation in my legs. The bottom of my feet went numb but it feels almost normal as long as I have socks and slippers or shoes on.

Life goes on but I wish I had known enough to go to the doctor at the first sign of problems and life would be a lot simpler. I repeat, please make sure you have regular checkups and go to your family doctor at the first sign of problems.

- Frank Mckeown

The American Trucking Association released On Monday, October 6th, the results of a survey that says the general public believes that truck drivers are among the saf-

est drivers on the road today.“This poll confirms that the public knows what we in the trucking industry have always

known: professional truck drivers are dedicated, professional and safe,” said ATA Presi-dent and CEO Bill Graves. “It also shows that our efforts to portray a positive image of our industry are having a tremendous impact.”

The poll was conducted by from September 20, to 24, 2014 by Public Opinion Strate-gies. 800 registered voters were part of the survey.

According to the poll: • 65% of respondents had a fa-

vorable impression of the trucking industry.

• 57% of respondents said the trucking industry’s safety record is favorable.

• 91% of respondents said they be-lieve that passenger vehicles are more likely to make unsafe maneuvers, such as tailgating, driving aggressively, or improperly changing lanes.

• 80% believe truck drivers are safer than passenger vehicle drivers.

• 7% of respondents believe truck drivers are more likely than passenger vehicle drivers to drive unsafely.

• 90% of respondents believe pas-senger vehicle drivers are more likely to speed than truck drivers.

• 74% of respondents think in acci-dents involving a car and a truck, the passenger vehicle driver is at fault.

“Our industry values safety above all,” said incoming ATA Chairman Duane Long, chairman of Longistics, Raleigh, N.C., “and this poll shows that our commitment to safety is paying dividends in the minds of the public.”

On August 19, the Federal Mo-tor Carrier Safety Administration

announced that it will accept input from stakeholders to determine a possible rule-making for entry-level truck driver training. After years of failing to implement a final rule establishing such criteria, the FMCSA is considering using a negotiated rulemaking, known as RegNeg.

Under RegNeg, outside agency repre-sentatives consult among each other in order to develop the proposed rule, taking the responsibility away from the FMCSA. In Canada, a task force is working toward es-tablishing criteria for entry-level drivers, as well as hoping to have the Canadian gov-ernment classify truck driving as a “skilled” profession.

Furthermore, the Canadian Trucking Al-liance has admitted that the primary causes for a driver shortage are driver wages, qual-ity of life, qualifications and demographics.

Ontario is set to introduce mandatory training for entry-level commercial driv-ers. Shoddy training schools continue to operate and because they charge less than

$1,000, they fly unregulated below the radar and compete with legitimate schools, that must charge five times that amount and follow all the rules and regulations.

The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA), which has been lobbying for mandatory training for entry-level drivers for quite some time, lauded the announcement, referring to it as a “watershed moment for

the trucking industry.”David Bradley, president of the

OTA, said: “The mere fact that someone holds a Class A licence does not ensure that person has the skills to be a safe and pro-ductive transport driver. Even an improved test will never fully determine a new driver’s skill level. Mandatory entry level training will at least assure trucking companies that when they hire a new driver, he or she has some basic level of skill that with additional training and experience can eventually lead to that person becoming a fully qualified professional driver.”

Transport Minister Steven Del Duca told the Toronto Star in an interview “We are going to go forward (with manda-tory entry-level training). We’re going to move as quickly as we can but we want to make sure that we get it right.” He added he believes “it should take place as quickly as possible, but in a manner that actually produces the end result that we all want, which is the safest roads in North America, which is part of my responsibility.”

Bradley said OTA would like to see drivers complete training to an industry-developed standard before they can take the licensing test.

It’s a start but unless and until Truck Driving becomes a “skilled trade” it’s just window dressing.

Will Truck Drivers finally be

recognized as “Skilled”?
