Greetings! I hope all are well. It has been a great summer here in Western South Dakota. We have had ample rain so the dams are full, the grass is still green and still growing, and the Hills are beautiful. In June we had our West River annual golf outing and poker run. The weather was perfect for both events. I wish there would have been a few more participants in the golf out-

ing because it truly is a fun day. I was unable to attend the poker run on Saturday due to an unexpected turn of events, but I heard the turnout was respectable with over 90 hands of poker being dealt out. So I would like to thank everyone who participated and I look forward to the event for next year. Let’s get together and find a few more golfers.

Here are a few updates on what is happening in the trucking indus-try. In May, truck tonnage only grew by 1.8% - the slowest growth month in two years. The Senate Panel has approved an amendment to the Highway Bill to move forward with the use of twin 33-foot trailers. Federal regulators, along with the EPA and NHTSA now have a 1,329 page main proposal for the Phase 2 greenhouse gas rule. In addition there is a 971 page regulatory impact analysis. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Senate Panel also unanimously ap-proved a new six-year Highway Policy Bill. Senior aides state that would amount to about $278 billion for highway and infrastructure programs. This bill would also require the U.S. DOT to complete its final rule on electronic logging devices and is proposed rule on speed limiters this year. You can read more about all these issues in Transport Topics. I would encourage everyone to do this. Keep up with this stuff so when our chance comes to make a difference we are prepared for it!

Finally, our local area is preparing for the 75th Sturgis Rally. I have heard from many sources that the expected attendance is over one million people. Wow!! I would personally like to invite everyone to participate in our Habeck Hooligan’s poker run happening on Sunday, August 2 at 9:00 a.m. It is a great ride with a lot of lo-cal truckers involved. If you plan to attend the rally, this is a great way to kick start the week. Please ride safely!! Remember “It’s just another day in paradise.” God Bless.

it seems the summer is flying by again! There is not enough time for golf, riding my Harley Davidson, rest and relaxation with my family or even yard work. Don’t you hate when work gets in the way of fun?

The summer board of directors meeting has come and gone again. We had great attendance and a very lively discussion. The Ag Commodities and log Haulers Con-ference Seminars also prompted very interesting and informative conversation. The Cliff Tjaden fishing event went well despite the fact that very few fish were caught and the attendance was a bit down from the past. We

will be looking at some options for this event in 2016 with hopes that attendance will again be what it was when this event was first started. if you have ideas, please get them to a SDTA Board Director or to a SDTA Staff member.

The west river golf outing took place under crystal clear skies in rapid City. Although the group was fairly small, everyone had a good time at the elks Golf Course. The fol-lowing day, we held our annual west river poker run with record or near record atten-dance. it is always fun to see the SDTA Members and some of their drivers participate in this event. i wish to express a personal thanks to Mr. rick Underwood from Dale's Tire for again making arrangements for the poker run. rick chooses a very interesting route through the Black Hills followed by a dinner for all participants at a great restaurant. Again, Thanks rick!

i am currently headed to florida to attend the annual meeting of the Trucking Associa-tion executives Council (TAeC). i am not sure why florida in the summer but i guess we need to go where the meeting is planned not where we would choose if going on vaca-tion. This annual meeting is a highlight for me because it gives all trucking executives from around the country a time to compare successes and failures in their state as-sociation. in addition, it gives us a chance to get on the same page concerning federal issues and challenges for the trucking industry. The meeting is an annual “recharge” that we all seem to need.

Stay tuned, i was recently given a heads-up about a bill being introduced in the United States Senate by our own Senator John Thune. The bill is 498 pages long and contains some very interesting fixes for many ongoing problems. i am sure you will be hearing much more about the details contained in the bill in the upcoming weeks and months. it is sure nice to have a couple of Senators and a Congresswoman in DC that actually understands trucking.

Please plan to attend the 2015 SDTA Annual Convention in Sioux falls. every member was recently sent all registration materials. There will be some great speakers con-ducting the seminars along with the usual great food, fun, entertainment and visiting with friends. Please plan to join us on September 9, 10 & 11.

Until next month . . .

i certainly expected we would be back to work and hard at it by the 1st of July, but the rain just doesn’t seem to quit. We will get there; survival has always been in our vocabulary.

i am sure everyone read the June issue of trucking news, there were some very good articles addressing some very hot topics. Myron addressed speed limiters, there were also articles on insurance liability limits, driver shortages and the perception of the trucking industry as a whole.

it has in the past been the mentality of many in our industry that all of these issues only pertain to the over the road trucking industry. let’s evaluate some of these issues, speed limiters i can only imagine the frustration especially as we find ourselves faced with the possibilities of reaching outside of the Black Hills to harvest logs. The many

interstate miles driven empty limited to a top speed of 65 miles per hour, wow!

Driver shortages, we have witnessed this over the last few years and i believe it will be an issue in the years to come. How can it not affect us when we are presently 35,000 drivers short nationwide and that number is expected to reach 200,000 in the next five years. it seems almost impossible to get new and younger people in this industry and we coin-cide with the nationwide problem of an aging workforce. The current average age of industry drivers is 53.

insurance liability limits, increasing them to 4 million dollars or more will definitely put a burden on the insurance bud-get. i also see this as an opportunity for our, litigious happy society.

even after the anti-indemnification law was passed in South Dakota people still try to find ways to absolve themselves of any liability.

While i am on a roll, let’s touch on eoBr’s. As we find ourselves with the possibilities of reaching farther out to harvest logs we could extend past the 100 air mile radius where log books come into play instead of time cards. With that comes a possible eoBr mandate. As it is now, hauling out of the ekalaka, Montana area is pushing the limits on air miles and using a time card. in fact, two trips from here is certain to exceed the time card limits and we must go to the log book.

So here’s to all of those out there that think the issues don’t pertain to our industry, refuse to acknowledge the issues and support those of us trying to look out for their best interest. i find the phrase from comedian Bill engvall appropriate when people are astonished by the changes and express their dissatisfaction after the fact. Here’S YoUr SiGN!!!!

it’s all about family with french: french awarded lifetime achievement award Reprinted from the Huron Plainsman 6/7/15--written by Roger Larsen

HUroN – in his millions of miles behind the wheel – in a career that has spanned more than 40 years – Gary french has crisscrossed the United States with his top prior-ity always on his mind.

His family.

“They’re first,” he said. “They’re what makes me. Truck’s second.”

As his kids were growing up, he did everything he could to be home for their sporting events and other activities.

A livestock trucker throughout his life, french has also hauled other products for local businesses.

“My main thing has been live stock,” he said. “i’ve had a lot of local customers in livestock.”

for his contributions to the indus try he loves, french is be-ing recog nized at the 2015 Wheel Jam Truck Show today in Huron as recipient of the lifetime Achievement Award.

He credits his wife, Deb, for his success. While he has been on the road, she has been the one who kept their Cavour household going, rais ing their three children. “A pretty good woman,” he said.

His dad, Jim, started the business in the early 1970s. Times were tough and he decided to buy a truck and haul cattle as a way of supplement ing farm income.

By 1988, french was on his own.

“Dad quit the business and i just kept going,” he said. “Why, i don’t know, but i did. it’s been a good life. i mean it’s treated us very well.”

for 10 years, he hauled live stock to California. Generally, his runs are to Nebraska and iowa, to Sioux falls and fort Pierre.

like with other industries, the equipment has changed and evolved over the years, from 42 foot trailers to 53 foot ones, from hauling 45,000 pounds to 86,000 pounds and more. from five axles to eight.

But it’s still him and the truck and the load.

And the road.

“Somebody’s still got to do it,” french said. “Someone’s still got to haul it.”

in his four million miles of driving America’s roads, he has amassed plenty of stories to share.

like the time in Norfolk, Nebraska, when he was waiting at a controlled intersection and a car pulled up alongside him.

Just then one of the critters in his trailer decided Mother Nature couldn’t wait.

“And the gal had a convert ible and it fell inside,” french said. “She was not happy. She called the cops and they came and stopped me.”

She wanted french arrested, and she wanted him to pay to have her car cleaned.

After assessing the situation, the officer didn’t see it that way. “He said, ‘well, sir, you’ve got your drains closed. There’s nothing you can do about that.

You have a good day.’

“oh she was mad,” french said. “She was still chewing on him when i drove away. But it’s uncontrollable.

“There have been a lot of things,” he said of his road expe-riences. “i’ve enjoyed a lot of it.”

Before his dad retired, french was learning the busi ness.

“i took my first trip to illinois when i was 17 years old,” he said. Another trucker accompanied him in another rig, but french was in his cab alone.

“i’ve met a lot of good peo ple in the world,” he said. “And there really isn’t any finer people than the livestock people. “i’ve met them all over, from illinois to Michigan, florida to California and everywhere in between,” french said. “i can’t say there was any of them i would not go back to again. They were all good people.

They treated us well.”

He said the livestock trucking industry is “kind of a slow thing any more.

“A lot of the cattle buyers are buying their own trailers and they’ve got guys pulling them,” he said. “As far as like me being an independent, it’s a little hard er to do it.

“i wouldn’t recommend any body getting into it today,” french said. “i’m not saying they couldn’t make a living at it, but it’s tougher.”

french said he’ll keep truck ing as long as he can.

“As long as she lets me,” he said, smiling at his wife. “it’s a family business. Always has been.”

And his family ... always comes first.

Back and neck pain Stop living with it and start relieving it. -- By Troy Gust, MD, Neurosurgeon at Sanford Health

is your job literally a pain in the neck? or back? if the answer is yes, you’re not alone.

extended periods of sitting in the same position behind the wheel combined with heavy lifting are a good recipe for back and neck pain. it can range from mild, dull annoying pain to severe and debilitating pain that interferes with your life.

why it hurts

Just as the kinds of back and neck pain vary, so do the causes. Some common causes include: overuse, strenuous activity, heavy lifting, obesity, smoking, muscle sprain or strain, arthritis, osteoporosis, herniated disc or disc degeneration.

Because the causes are so wide-ranging, it’s important to pay attention to your body and your daily activities. That can help you learn what may be contributing to your back or neck pain.

when to get help

often, back and neck pain will heal with time and a routine dose of ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory. But if after five to seven days, you don’t see any improvement, it’s time to seek an evaluation.

Some other indicators of a more serious problem include weakness in the hand, arm, foot or leg; loss of bowel or bladder control; and sexual problems. if you are experiencing any of these, you need to see a medical professional.

Finding relief

Treatments and therapy for back or neck pain are patient specific. A thorough evaluation of the cause of your pain is necessary to determine the next steps.

Some treatment options include physical therapy combined with pain relievers or anti-inflammatories; chiropractic manipula-tion, possible lumbar or cervical traction, epidural steroids or facet joint injections to block the pain. And if these do not provide relief, surgery is another option to consider.

Surgical options

There are a variety of cervical or spinal surgeries available. Again, it depends on the specific condition of each patient to deter-mine which will provide the most benefit.

Spinal fusion: A surgeon joins, or fuses, vertebrae together to restrict motion, thus relieving pain.

Bone or disc removal: A surgeon will remove part of the bone or a bulging or “slipped” disc, to alleviate pressure on the nerves, thereby relieving the pain. A spinal fusion may also be required to provide stability.

Cervical disc replacement: instead of fusing the spine after removal of a disc, a surgeon inserts an artificial disc, allowing for more motion of the spine and better protection of the area around the replacement disc.

if you are experiencing back or neck pain, it’s important to know that you shouldn’t simply suffer with the pain endlessly. There are a variety of options available to you that can help provide relief, so you can improve your quality of life.

for more information about finding relief for your back or neck pain, call the Sanford Neurosurgery Clinic at (605) 312-8500.
