But there is really more than that required:

Continuation of the hacker culture

AKA: FOSS (Free and Open Source Software)


Why is Apache Open Source?

Open Protocols require Open Source

People want to “own” those protocols

Remove incentive for custom implementations of those protocols

Innovation: Developers == Users


Open Source: HackerHaving a real impact in the development and direction of IT

Personal satisfaction: I wrote that!

Sense of membership in a community

Sense of accomplishment - very quick turnaround times

Developers and engineers love to tinker - huge opportunity to do so


Open Source: BusinessHaving a real impact in the development and direction of IT

Sense of membership in a community (most of the time)

Save on expensive resources

Ability to focus on what differentiates yourself

Allows for nimbleness and agility

Increased revenue and market share

But we need communities!Resist one-off forks: merge and pull

Collaborate: make it easy

Consensus: the great goal

New blood: make it inviting/welcoming
