Incorporated in 1999 as the ASF

Volunteer run foundation: non-profit

Hundreds of projects: started with 1 (httpd)

What is Open Source? There must be an OSI-approved LICENSE

But there is really more than that required:

Community

Collaboration

Continuation of the hacker culture

AKA: FOSS (Free and Open Source Software)

Why is Apache Open Source?

Open Protocols require Open Source

People want to “own” those protocols

Remove incentive for custom implementations of those protocols

Innovation: Developers == Users

Open Source: HackerHaving a real impact in the development and direction of IT

Personal satisfaction: I wrote that!

Sense of membership in a community

Sense of accomplishment - very quick turnaround times

Developers and engineers love to tinker - huge opportunity to do so

Open Source: BusinessHaving a real impact in the development and direction of IT

Sense of membership in a community (most of the time)

Save on expensive resources

Ability to focus on what differentiates yourself

Allows for nimbleness and agility

Increased revenue and market share

Open Source: UsersAccess to the source code

Avoid vendor lock-in (or worse!)

Much better software

Better security record (more eyes)

Much more nimble development - frequent releases

Direct user input

Open Standards

Why does FOSS Matter?Innovation

Power

Faster Success

Faster Fails

Neutrality

Open Source is Everywhere

!leveraging open source == ball & chain

Skill sets are in demand!

FOSS now well regarded (you can be proud of it)

Easy to show one’s code portfolio

Page 11: Drupal Camp Balto 2015

But there’s risksDesire for control stronger than ever!

The Cloud

Containers

Software patents

Even basic services (Email != Gmail)

Page 12: Drupal Camp Balto 2015

But we need communities!Resist one-off forks: merge and pull

Collaborate: make it easy

Consensus: the great goal

New blood: make it inviting/welcoming

Share the Good News!
