2016 is over and 2017 is another fresh year for the Drupal community. It is time to reflect back on what Drupal gained in the past year and how far the CMS and the community fared in terms of market penetration and popularity.
We are happy to say that 2016 has been very fruitful for Drupal and its community. The CMS matured into a major market player and now powers almost 2.2% of the total websites on the internet. This is a strong indication that Drupal is rapidly becoming an important member of the Big Three.
2016 DRUPAL NEWS
Drupal 8 Turns OnePerhaps, the most important news of 2016 is that Drupal 8 became a year old on November 19, 2016! To celebrate this occasion, Dries Buytaert, the founder of Drupal shared some notable Drupal 8 websites on his official blog.
Support for Drupal 6 EndsIn 2016, the support for Drupal 6 ended officially. If you have a Drupal 6 website, it is high time you move it to Drupal 7 or Drupal 8 as soon as possible to avoid any problems.
Composer Comes to DrupalComposer, the well-known dependency management tool is now available for Drupal. This is great news for Drupal developers as Composer completely streamlines the process of using external libraries and packages in a project without worrying about missing dependencies and updates. Drupal 8 No Longer Includes Dev Dependencies in Release PackageStarting with Drupal 8, stable releases will not include developer libraries because the code in these libraries in either unstable or insecure. Drupal also does not recommend deployment of untested code on live websites. Always deploy dev code and libraries on production websites to test and evaluate.
2016 DRUPAL EVENTS
DrupalConLike previous years, two DrupalCons were held in 2016.This year, New Orleans (May 9-13, 2016) and Dublin (September 26-30, 2016) played host to DrupalCon with great success. In other Drupalcon related events, Drupalcon Asia finally happened in Mumbai, India. Asia has the second largest Drupal user base after the United States, and the Mumbai event was attended by over 1,000 attendees (82% of them being first-time attendees).
2016 MAJOR DRUPAL WEBSITES LAUNCHED
NasdaqNasdaq Corporate Solutions serve 3,000 of the world’s largest businesses. For their newest investor relations website, Nasdaq Solutions opted for Drupal as the core CMS.
City of Boston Official WebsiteThe City of Boston chose to power their official website with Drupal.
LamborghiniA company that makes fast cars do need a fast CMS for its websites. Dries Buytaert announced on his blog that Lamborghini, one of the top Italian supercar manufacturer launched their latest website using Drupal 8.
Tag HeuerTag Heuer, a highly respected watch manufacturer chose to integrate Drupal 8 with their Magento store. A premium watchmaker needs a premium website, and Drupal fulfills this condition very nicely!
