    Introduction

ApplicationsDuctility machines are used to determine the ductility o ormed asphalt/cementor semi-solid bitumen by measuring the distance o elongation beore reaching

the breaking point o a briquet sample, which is pulled apart at a specific speedand temperature. The H-1068 Ductility machines meet ASTM D113, D6084 andAASHTO T51, T301 and T300 when H-1021 is utilized. In the absence o anyspecified variations in the test method, the test procedure as outlined in theseinstructions may be ollowed.

InstalllationHumboldt H-1068 Ductility machines are shipped complete, ready oroperation. Standard units are supplied or operation on 120V 60Hz or 220V50Hz operation. Be sure that the power cord is plugged into a properlygrounded electrical outlet. For accurate and repeatable operation, the unitshould be used on a fat, level surace. For best results the unit should bemounted on our rubber pads.Note: 220V 50Hz circulators do not ship with a plug on the power cord.I it is necessary to select dierent power cord, ollow guidelines in thecirculator user manual.

    DescriptionThe water bath trough size is 77" x 9-1/2" x 6-7/8" (L x W x D) and isconstructed o polished stainless steel with over fow.

The synchronous, direct-drive motor can be set to maintain a speed o 1/4,1 or 5 cm per minute. A single, lead screw prevents agitation o water and pre-mature rupture o specimens, traveling pointer indicates exact position o car-riage on a linear centimeter scale attached to the ront edge o the trough. The

trough is double-wall insulated. Gears & other parts are bronze or solid brass orlubrication and to prevent rust.

The temperature range o the circulator is -13F to 300F (0C to 30C). Thispermits tests to be run above or below room temperature throughout the entiretesting operation. Some o the eatures o the circulator include solid statecontrol; zero crossover, integrated circuitry with contact thermometer; heaterwattage adjustable to 1000W; rerigeration unit is 500W; a three-wire cord isurnished with the ductility machine and constant temperature circulator. Each

    unit can be operated independently.

The temperature tolerance can be more easily achieved by using the coverH-1068PC, which is available as an accessory.

    Standard model operates on 120V, 60Hz, .5F version operates on220V, 50Hz A.C.

Sample PreparationUnless otherwise specified the test should be conducted at a temperatureo 77F 0.9F (25C 0.5C), and a speed o 5 cm per minute 5.0 percent. When a low-temperature ductility test is desired, the test should be run at a

    temperature o 39.2F (4C), and at a rate o pull o 1 cm per minute.

Assemble the mold on the brass plate. To prevent the material under test romsticking, it is suggested that the surace o the plate and interior suraces o thesides o the mold be thoroughly amalgamated. Make sure the plate is perectlyfat and level so that the bottom surace o the mold will touch it throughout.

Completely melt the bituminous material to be tested until thoroughly fuid byheating it in an oil bath maintained at the minimum temperature needed to

properly liquey the sample, when paving asphalt cements are to be tested, the oil bath should be maintained at a temperature o 302F to 320F (150Cto 160C).

Strain the melted sample through a No. 50 sieve. Ater stirring thoroughly, pour into the mold, taking care not to disarrange the parts o the mold. Pourthe material back and orth in a thin stream rom end to end o the mold untilthe mold is more than level ull.

Allow the mold containing the material to cool to room temperature or aperiod o 30 to 40 minutes. Then place the mold in the water bath maintainedat the specified temperature o test or 30 minutes. Cut o the excess bitumenwith a hot, straight-edged knie or spatula to make the mold level ull.Place the brass plate and mold with the briquette specimen in the water bathand keep them at the specified temperature or a period o rom 85 to 95minutes. Ater the elapsed period o time, remove the briquette rom the plate, detach the side pieces and immediately test the briquette.

Test ProcedureFill the 20 gallon capacity trough with water until the level reaches a pointwhere it will cover the test specimen by at least 2.5 cm both above and below.

Bring the water to the desired test temperature. During the test the watershould be kept at the specified temperature within 0.9F (0.5C).To adjust the speed o the carriage, move the knurled knob at the end o thesliding gear all the way in or 1/4 cm per minute, hal way out or 1 cm perminute and all the way out or 5 cm per minute. Be sure to locate thepositioning lever in the proper slot. This will not only locate, but will also lockthe gears in their exact alignment.

Place the specimen in position by setting one end o the specimen mold intoone o the three mounting pins on the end plate. Set the other end o the moldinto the corresponding pin on the movable carriage.

Move the length indicator to the zero position on the scale located on the upperside o the tank by loosening the adjusting screw. The length indicator will thenread the distance the specimen has been pulled apart in centimeters.

At the completion o the test return the carriage to the starting position.Note: I the test material comes in contact with the surace o the water or thebottom o the bath, the test is not considered satisactory. The specific gravityo the bath may be adjusted by the addition o either methyl alcohol or sodium

chloride to prevent the bituminous sample rom coming to the surace o thewater or touching the bottom o the bath during the test.

Operating InstructionsThe Temperature Controlled Ductility Machine has a separate thermostaticallycontrolled constant temperature circulator with recommended fuids circulatingthrough finned tubes in the trough. Recommended circulator fuids are 50/50filtered or distilled water and glycol to maintain a constant temperature o within 0.9F (0.5C).

Test ReportThe test is considered normal when the rupture occurs at the point where thethread has practically no cross-sectional area.

The average o three normal tests is reported as the ductility o the sample.

MaintenanceAll bearing suraces should be kept clean. the oil cups provide or adding SAE

Grade 30 lubricating oil. Threaded lead screw should be kept clean and properlygreased to ensure proper carriage level travel. Use NGLI #2 Extreme PressureLithium Grease or equivalent on the threads. When not in use, remove line cordrom the outlet to prevent misuse or improper handling.
