Exhibition Opening Wed 25 May, 5 – 7pmThurs 26 – Sat 28 May, 10am – 5pm West Ward Works

From the buildings we live in, to the tools we use for our work, to the products, services and materials that allow us to express ourselves, interact with one another, and live well — everything is linked by design.

Across an entire floor of a former print works in the once industrial heart of Dundee, this exhibition weaves together some of the great design stories currently emerging from the city, including new innovations in textiles, game design and design for heath and wellbeing.

These are stories of local design with global impact, stories about what design can do when we join forces. Taken as a whole, they capture a moment where, in a city the size of Dundee, people are coming together from across studios, campuses, cities and nations to help frame problems and find solutions.

Scottish Jewellery Week West Ward Works also plays host to Scottish Jewellery Week, a biennial celebration of the best contemporary jewellers and silversmiths living or trained in Scotland. Scottish Jewellery Week includes an exhibition showcasing the work of 15 jewellers, a jeweller-in-residence plus a Jewellery Trail across the city.

Across the City

Dundee has continually reinvented itself after the collapse of its heavy industries. Fast forward to today and design is right at the heart of how the city imagines its future.

The role of design was unequivocally underlined in 2014 when UNESCO named Dundee the UK’s first City of Design. This prestigious award recognises the major contribution Dundee has made to design worldwide.

Today, the city is busy creating an expansive, dynamic waterfront, designing an open, inclusive city of the future. At the heart of this plan is the creation of V&A Museum of Design Dundee, a global home for Scotland’s design heritage and a showcase for the best of international design.

Taking place in West Ward Works plus other venues across the city, the four-day festival programme is a collaboration with Dundee’s major cultural institutions. It includes over 30 exhibitors and more than 30 talks, workshops and performances designed to delight and enthrall a wide range of audiences.

Guthrie Street Dundee DD1 5BR

West Ward Works is the perfect venue for the inaugural Dundee Design Festival, connecting the city’s industrial past with its creative present.

A former print works and the site of an important jute mill in the Blackness area of the city, this building was home to the printing and binding of DC Thomson titles including Beezer, Twinkle, Black Bob, Sparky, and Topper for over 60 years.

Place.Work.Folk. Design.

Dundee, the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design, is hosting the first Dundee Design Festival from 25th to 28th May.

A former print works in the once industrial heart of the city will play host to an ambitious programme of design activity including exhibitions, talks, workshops and performances.

The theme for the first Dundee Design Festival is “Place. Work. Folk. Design.” through which we explore the potential of design to connect the city’s communities and improve our everyday lives.

Focusing on design for health and wellbeing and including the best of digital design, computer game design, textiles and architecture, this ground-breaking work examines how design involves everyone, connects everything and makes anything possible.
