Dunn County Association for Home &
Community Education
Welcome to our December newsletter! I am finding it difficult to believe another year is almost over and the holiday season is upon us. I hope you all will be able to spend quality time with your loved ones, and enjoy that time together!
Our Fall Northwest District Meeting was held on Thursday, October 19th in Cushing. Five members of the Dunn County Executive board attended. Each county set up a display of some of the projects and volunteer ideas they do in their counties. Some beautiful quilts as well were displayed.
We will probably have held the Christmas Tea by the time you receive this newsletter, and I hope you all were able to attend. I always admire the themes and ideas the clubs come up with each year! A fun time to gather with our friends and fellow HCE members too!
I will be working on the 2018 program books the next few weeks and getting them ready to print for the new year. A big thank you to all the members who attended the President’s Meeting and joined us in brainstorming our lessons! Some awesome programming is in the works for everyone.
Make sure that your updated member lists are sent in to the County treasurer as soon as possible so we can get our lists updated and dues paid. This is very important so that we have a
current list of members in our county, which in turn needs to be sent into the state as well. We also use this list for several other tasks during the year. A reminder that all Individual members also need to pay their dues to continue to participate. Thank you!
I have included the “wish list” from WinterHaven, the homeless shelter. If any club or individual is looking for places to donate or volunteer, this is an idea. I know you all have special places that you like to make your donations, and that is wonderful. Just remember to keep track of the approximate dollar amounts so you can let me know for the Contribution report I need to compile in May!
We have a special interest meeting that will be held on January 22, 2018. We will be learning about “Healthy Bones.” More information will be given to you regarding the time and the place for this important health related session!
Make sure your secretaries get their minutes to the center chairs, so they can compile a report for upcoming newsletters as well. We all like to read about what other clubs are doing in our county! Happy Holiday wishes to all!

Thanksgiving is over and winter is here. This fall has been a challenge for the farmers but hopefully they get their crops in before the snow flies. Winter is a great time to read and the new books the children have will give them something new to read and share with their family.
Our book program is a wonderful way to help literacy. The children are always delighted to receive their new books and our readers love reading to them. The teachers also love the program so let’s keep the program going. With the help of clubs, individuals, our used book sale, and grants, we can make this happen. Donations are always welcomed so remember to save your lightly used books for our used book sale at the fair.

County Board Officers
I would like to welcome Jayette Giere as the new Dunn County Executive Board Treasurer! I really appreciate her stepping up to take this position. I have decided to remain as the President for the next three years, if all goes well. Rosalie Werner has agreed to step into the Vice President position to help me out as needed. We still need a West Center Chairman to replace Rosalie, and that needs to be someone from either Ideal, Palmer or Weber Valley. Please think about volunteering for this position! If desired, two people can co-chair in this position.
I have also volunteered to be the Treasurer of the Northwest District for the next three years, so if I ask for help with some of the duties on the county level, I hope you are willing to step up and assist!
Chris
Thank You!
I want to take this opportunity to thank Sue Hitz for her five years as Treasurer, both on the County level as well as the Northwest District! Enjoy your "retirement" as HCE treasurer, Sue!

Sandy Gerth Memorial
Palmer Homemakers are feeling the loss of Sandy Gerth who passed away on September 22nd. Sandy joined homemakers back in 1968 and over the many years missed very few meetings. Homemakers were a special part of her life and when building her home, she wanted to make sure there would be plenty of parking for all of the members. Sandy served as our historian and did a beautiful job keeping up with the scrapbooks. After Sandy entered the Neighbors and eventually Colfax Rehabilitation Center, the club held their monthly meetings at her “new home” so Sandy could attend! She was an extremely generous member who always thought of other’s needs before thinking of hers. She would be the first to volunteer to bake two dozen cookies for a function and bring six dozen instead! When it was her turn to host the club there would be a gazillion different items offered because she did not want to “run out”. Sandy’s interests were varied. She liked to have fun first of all, but she was a collector of beautiful glassware and numerous knick knacks, a phenomenal baker, card player and crafter of cards. Her home was always decorated with many, many things for the holidays! We miss her spitfire spunk but fortunately have many fond memories to last a lifetime.

Are you interested in painting a barn quilt and/or
participating in the Dunn County
Barn Quilt Trail Project?
Barn quilts are popping up across Dunn County. You can find them hanging on barns, sheds, or granaries as you travel throughout Dunn County and the entire state. A barn quilt is a quilt block painted onto a piece of plywood and hung on a barn or shed. It is an artistic way of promoting agriculture and tour-ism. Barn quilts featured in the Dunn County trail project are either 4’x4’ or 8’x8’ in size. We have almost 30 barn quilts show-casing Dunn County’s rich agricultural history and are looking for more!
The Dunn County Barn Quilt Project is a cooperative effort between UW-Extension Dunn County, the Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, and MJ’s Barn Quilts.
A brochure listing all of the quilts, a description of the quilt block patterns, and a trail map can be found in the trail brochure available from the UW-Extension office and on our website—http://dunn.uwex.edu/agriculture/ dunn-county-barn-quilts/
You can still be involved with this exciting initiative! An application for a 4’x4’ or 8’x8’ barn quilt can be found on our website. A fee is collected to pay for materials. If you’re not sure where to start, feel free to call our office. Project Team members Mary Kolstad or Janine Thull are willing to work with you to discuss your ideas, collect information and assist you in picking out your quilt pattern. They will also assist you in drawing and painting of your barn quilt. Barn quilts can be painted this winter in a heated room at the Dunn County Community Services Building in Menomonie. We will work with you to find a company to assist with the hanging of the barn quilt.
Please contact Katie Wantoch, Dunn County UW-Extension Agriculture Agent, at 715-232-1636 or email at mail to: [email protected] for more information on the Dunn County Barn Quilt project.
