Level

Most of the devices featured in this section use the magnetic attraction or repulsion system of operation. This rugged electro-me-chanical design has proven itself for more than 50 years and millions of heavy duty applications. The electro-mechanical system con-sists of an attractor of magnetic material, usually 430 SS, or a magnet inside the control and a movable magnet outside the device.As the attractor moves in or out of the magnetic field the magnet moves toward or away from the attractor. The magnet is attachedto one or more snap action or mercury switches. As the magnet moves it pivots and operates the switch assembly to either make orbreak one or more electrical contacts. This switch action performs the task of operating equipment, alarms, shutdowns, and/or re-ports such functions to a computer or central location. Controls featuring this magnet operated system can be used at temperaturesup to 800°F (425°C) and pressures up to 1750 psig (121 bar). Liquid level controls are available to handle fluids from water to moreaggressive liquids requiring all 316 SS construction. Dry bulk controls can handle materials from carbon black to soybean flour. Elec-trical contacts of SPST, SPDT, or DPDT configuration are provided to accommodate applications from 12 amperes AC, 10 amperesDC, to milliampere requirements of high technology low current, low voltage intrinsically safe or “dry” circuits. General purpose,weatherproof or explosion-proof enclosures protect the electrical switch assemblies from the environment.

Dwyer Dry Bulk or Liquid Level controls are designed to perform two functions. A. To maintain a level. This task is usually completed by using a control with a wide deadband, or two fixed deadband controls and aholding relay. Thus when the level of a liquid or dry bulk material reaches a pre-determined high (or low) point a pump is shut off orturned on. This cycle is repeated continuously such as in a sump, tank, lubrication equipment, bin or other pressurized or non-pres-sured vessel. B. To monitor a safe level or detect a not-to-exceed level - that is to act as an alarm, or shut down, or both. This can be either high orlow functions or both. This is accomplished by using a control with a fixed deadband. There are a great variety of controls suitablefor this purpose.

There are basically 8 determining factors when selecting a control for a specific function. 1. Pressure 8. Method of attachment2. Temperature A. External pipe mounted3. If the control is to be externally mounted, can the chamber be a welded type such as for use with clean non-corrosive liquids or shouldit be flanged so that the unit can be inspected and/or easily maintained? Welded chamber benefits are that they are usually less ex-pensive than flanged controls and can be used with higher pressure and temperature. The disadvantage is that the unit cannot bedisassembled for cleaning or inspection. Flanged units can be disassembled but are more expensive and have lower pressure and tem-perature capability.

Controls for top mounted service are generally capable of performing a greater variety of functions such as operating 1, 2 or 3 pumps,providing high and low alarm or combining functions such as operating a pump and providing both high and low alarms in one unit.

el The W.E. Anderson® L4 float switch provides a simple, reliable

means for monitoring and controlling the level of a liquid in alarge tank. In this holding tank application, the lower L4 indi-cates to the operator that a tank fill cycle is required; the L4 canalso control the necessary valve or pump to provide an auto-matic fill cycle. When the level of the liquid reaches the upperL4, the switch activates another indicator lamp or terminatesthe automatic fill cycle. The L4 float switch in optional stainlesssteel is recommended for level control of corrosive liquids,while the lower cost standard brass L4 serves well in mostwater and oil applications.

Pneumatic conveying systems use air to transport powderand dry bulk solids through conveying lines. The air is pres-surized by positive pressure or vacuum to move the productthrough the lines into and out of silos, transporters, andreceivers. Typical applications have high and low level indica-tion in the storage bins to control the flow of product in or out.The PLS is perfect for level use in these storage bins. It hasa rotating paddle that is inserted into the bin. As the productlevel builds up in the bin it stops the paddle from rotating andtriggers the level output. The PLS is great for this applicationas it not affected by pressure changes in the bin.

Proximity® Series PLS is used to indicate level sta-tus in pneumatic conveying systems.

Mercoid® pumpcontroller with level transmitter control pumpsin wastewaterlift stations.

Lift stations are used to transmit wastewater to the treatment facility.Wastewater is transmitted by gravity feed so it has to be continuallyelevated to provide height to generate the flow. Lift stations are pitslocated at points in the wastewater system to collect the wastewaterthat usually have two submersible pumps. Wastewater in the lift sta-tion is pumped out to a higher level from where it can flow on to thenext lift station or to the treatment facility. The Mercoid® Series MPCpump controller is used with the Series PBLT level transmitter to con-trol the level in the lift station. The PBLT is a level transmitter that issubmersed in the tank and sends a linear output of the height of waste-water above it. The MPC takes the height input and controls the pumpsaccording to how it has been programmed. For a lift station, the pri-mary pump comes on when the tank hits a high level and turns offwhen the level decreases to the set low level. The second pump is usedif the first pump cannot drain the station and comes on at a set higherlevel above pump 1. High and low level alarms, submersible pump sealfailure indication, pump over temperature protection, and pump alter-ation all are built into the MPC.

The supply of grain pneumatically conveyed to this dispensinghopper is controlled by two Proximity® Series PLS paddle levelswitches. When the grain level falls to the low limit switch, thesupply is turned on until the hopper fills to the level of the highlimit switch which turns off the supply. Since grain dust is explo-sive, the explosion-proof Series PLS provides the required safe-ty protection. The PLS is a paddle level switch and is not affect-ed by the varying pressure in the hopper due to the cycling ofthe pneumatic conveying system.

Level

A hydro-pneumatic tank with a deep well pump maintains desired pressure in a watersystem. The pump, however, delivers entrained air along with makeup water, requiringperiodic tank venting to prevent excess pressure buildup. As both water level and tankpressure must be maintained, one side of the W.E. Anderson Duotect® pressure switchis interlocked with the Anderson L-4 float switch via the control box. When tank pres-sure falls below the preset system pressure due to water drawdown, the Duotect®

switch starts the pump and transfers control to the float switch. When the preset waterlevel is reached, the float switch turns pump off. If entrained air has increased the pres-sure beyond the limit set in the other side of the Duotect® pressure switch, after a timedelay covering several normal cycles, the switch will open the solenoid valve and ventthe tank down to proper pressure.

These typical applications may suggest ideas for solving your control problems:In all systems it is essential that adequate liquid or dry bulk material exists in a pipeline or tank. Mercoid, Anderson, Proximity orDwyer switches provide the control and monitor function automatically, reliably and at moderate cost. These controls are widely usedin power generating stations, petroleum and chemical processing, pumping stations, air conditioning, heating, hot/cold water supply,liquid or dry bulk transfer, water treatment, sumps and a great variety of industrial applications. The diagrams below suggest but afew of the many applications that protect your motors, pumps, engines and processors.

Industrial sumps and other underground tanks are ideal applications for top mountedMercoid displacer type level controls. Easily installed, these controls use porcelain dis-placers that do not float on the surface of liquids but are suspended on a coil spring andcable. As the liquid in the tank reaches the level of the upper displacers their weight de-creases by an amount equal to the liquid displaced allowing the spring to move thecable upward, actuating the switch and the pump is turned on. As the liquid level fallsbelow the upper displacers they move only a small amount, staying within the switchdeadband until the liquid level falls to the center of the bottom displacer. At this point theswitch is deactivated stopping the pump. The pump will remain deactivated until thewater level rises to the upper displacers, repeating the cycle. The displacers are not af-fected by turbulence, pressure or chemicals and are excellent for tanks with viscous ordirty liquids. The level differential is easily adjusted by repositioning of the displacers onthe 316SS cable.

A magnetic coupling completely seals the switch(es) in the housing from the productand environment, assuring high reliability and enhanced safety. Alarm capability is de-picted above. Side-mounted flange models are applicable for all bin levels. Top-of-the-bin suspension mounted models for high and intermediate point level provide improvedsensitivity (in materials with bulk densities as low as 5 pounds per cubic foot), and en-hanced vertical adjustment capability compared to flange mounted models. Conve-nient external adjustment screws simplify field setup. Material problems associated withflange mounted models are solved by using suspended models. Elastomeric di-aphragms are typically used in products such as fly ash, plastics, grain, powders,foundry sand, cement, aggregate, coal metal chips and glass. For pneumatic (pressure)applications, use of porous filter fabric diaphragms eliminates venting requirements dueto inherent ability to breathe. Many different diaphragm materials are available to fill thewide variety of needs in the industrial market.

Liquid level in external piping equals level in tank. When level rises to high limit, float inupper model 123 is lifted, actuating switch to sound high level alarm. When level dropsto low limit, lower model 123 sounds low level alarm.

Surprisingly compact, the Flotect® L6 is designed and built for yearsof trouble-free service in a wide variety of process liquid level applica-tions. Operation is simple and dependable with no mechanical linkageas the level switch is magnetically actuated. The float lever pivotedwithin the body moves when the process liquid displaces the float. Amagnet on the opposite end of the float lever controls a second magneton the switch actuating lever located in the switch housing.

Model L8 Flotect® Liquid Level Switch features a leakproof body and float constructed from tough, durablepolyphenylene sulfide (equivalent to Ryton®) which has excel-lent chemical resistance. Because the liquid level snap switch ismagnetically actuated, there is no direct mechanical linkage toleak or fail, assuring longer life and decreased maintenancecosts. This inexpensive unit is ideal for liquid level alarm, indi-cation or control. Installation is quick and easy — simply installin a horizontal position with the index arrow pointing down.

The L8 Flotect®Liquid Level Control is UL recognized as an in-dustrial motor controller per UL standard 508, suitable formounting in a protected environment. This lightweight switchcan be used in numerous chemical process, industrial systemsand similar applications where process conditions are compati-ble with polyphenylene sulfide, ceramic 8 and 316 SS. This liq-uid level switch provides accurate setpoint control of liquidswith specific gravities as low as 0.6. This compact and reliablecontrol is designed to handle temperatures up to 212°F (100°C)and pressures to 150 psig (10 bar).

The Mini-Size Series L10 Flotect® Level Switches combine low costwith top quality materials and construction for great value and years of re-liable liquid level control. Wide media compatibility is assured with a choiceof brass or stainless steel bodies and external tees; polypropylene or stain-less steel floats. Two basic configurations are offered; with 1" male NPTthreads for direct side mounting through a half coupling or with factory in-stalled tee for external mounting.

All Series L10 controls feature a hermetically sealed, magnetically actuat-ed SPST reed switch which is encapsulated in a polypropylene housing.Units are quickly and easily adjusted for your choice of normally open ornormally closed operation thanks to a unique patented design. Just loosentwo screws and instantly slide the switch assembly to the action required.N.O. and N.C. markings are clearly visible. This feature also speeds switchreplacement if damage occurs.

Series F7 compact level switches combine low cost and re-liability with fast, simple installation. Hermetically sealed reedswitches are actuated by magnets permanently bonded insidethe float and can be easily adapted to open or close a circuit onrising or falling levels. Vertical mount models are shipped withnormally open switch contacts which close as the float rises to-ward the mounting threads. Reverse switch action by removingthe float, rotating it end-for-end and replacing it on the stem. Ver-tical models mount internally, oriented within 30° of vertical, orselect optional fittings for external mounting. Switch ratings aresuitable for many solid state control systems and monitors oralarms. Simple relay interfaces can be used for higher currentapplications.

Series F7 Specialty Level Switches are designed for unique ap-plications. Model F7-SS5B/BNC can be used with viscous liquids or liq-uids with suspended metal particles. Use model F7-LL for low leveldetection (>5/8˝). The non-intrusive bottle style F7-EB mounts com-pletely outside the tank at the actuation level. Suspend model F7-WBBin stand pipes or sumps for leak detection or drop into wells for ground-water monitoring.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The optical level switch employs an LED, which transmits infraredlight. This light is sent through a prism and reflected back to a photo-transistor utilizing two 90° light reflections. With the prism surround-ed by a gas, the light source is cast back to the photo transistor. Whena translucent liquid is introduced to the prism at or above the pointwhere the light source makes contract with the prism, the light isreflected into the liquid, not allowing the photo-transistor to energize.

One of our most versatile level controls, the model B-l90 can be used on all types of tank or sump level con-trol applications. Three porcelain displacers provide deadband adjustment. Unit can start a sump pump (forexample) when liquid reaches the high set point and turn the pump off when the level drops to the low setpoint. Unit works equally well in pressurized tanks. Model CLS1 Capacitance Level Switch provides reliable pointlevel measurement of solids, liquids and slurries in metallic or non-metallic tanks and vessels. Model CLS1 detects the presence or ab-sence of material in contact with the probe by sensing a change in thecapacitance. Electronics provide highly sensitive measurement detec-tion (requires less than a 1 picofarad shift from ambient). State of theart technology ignores material build-up on the vessel sidewall or alongthe probe assembly. One time calibration is simple with a single multi-turn potentiometer. The Mini-Bin provides reliable level sensing for dry bulk solidswhere mounting space is limited. This compact, side mount control reportshigh, intermediate, and low level conditions, eliminating overflows, chok-ing, clogs or empty vessels. Model DBLM Mini-Bin operates by using a 1rpm synchronous motor to rotate a four vane, plastic paddle. Diaphragm Selection: A wide variety of diaphragms are available tomatch product bulk density, flowability, abrasiveness and temperaturerequirements while providing maximum sensitivity. The best choice forvessels subject to pressure or vacuum is “breathable” fabric (P Se-ries), requiring no venting. Non-porous elastomer (G Series) type di-aphragms are the best choice for more abrasive product and broadertemperature range applications. Venting is always required with the Gseries and if used in pressurized vessels, venting to the tank atmos-phere is required to allow pressure equalization. A slide rule “Di-aphragm Selector” is available from the factory to help you choose thediaphragm best suited to your application.

Suspension Mounting is normally used forhigh level monitoring in vessels. For productover 20 pounds/cu. ft., the level switch (di-aphragm face) should be located about 1⁄3 of thedistance from the vessel wall to the point ofentry of the product. For product less than 20pounds/cu. ft., the unit should be located clos-er to the point of entry of the product, about 1⁄2the distance from the vessel wall to the pointof entry. Pressure required to depress the diaphragm and trip theswitch is in the range of 5–15 oz in the horizontal direction (perpen-dicular to the diaphragm). Suspension mounting provides the easiestvertical adjustment capability, greatest sensitivity and best mainte-nance conditions.

Suspension Assembly Kits: Pre-assembled kits are available fromthe factory, or you can build your own kits using standard pipe fittingsshown in our Proximity Bill of Materials (Form No. 101). Pipes and fit-tings are normally galvanized steel, but aluminum and stainless steelpipes and fittings are available. Units pictured on the previous pageare secured to a steel cover plate that rests on a rectangular steelflange welded into the top of the vessel. Aluminum and stainless cov-erplates and flanges are also available. Standard 48" long x 1" pipe pro-vides working depth (WD) up to 48". Longer pipe (to provide greaterWD) is available. GS Series switches have upper (L1 = 28" standard)and lower (L2 = 20" standard) 1" pipes, with a tee (for stilling pot) in be-tween. A stilling pot is required to equalize pressure and keep dirtfrom building up behind the diaphragm. PS series require a 1⁄2" conduitin 1" suspension pipe for explosion-proof applications. The 1⁄2" conduit(56" standard length) is a standard part of the GS series assembly.

Incorporated in the design of the PLS is a magnetic drive that istime proven by decades of use in our Mark Series valve position indi-cator product line. A 1 rpm synchronous motor rotates the paddle uti-lizing a magnetic drive. As product builds up the paddle is impededfrom moving and the resulting motor torque activates the outputswitches and stops the motor. A spring mechanism reactivates themotor and returns the switches to normal state when the product nolonger impedes the paddle rotation.

Standard construction is weatherproof with explosion-proof optional,and the unit can be side or top mounted. The PLS is designed with theindustry standard 1-1/4˝ male NPT connection and mounting flanges.

Level The Mercoid MPC Pump Controller provides versatile level

control in a standard 1/4 DIN package. Designed for use withalmost any style level transmitter the unit displays the presentlevel and main set point value. Incorporated in the MPC is pro-grammable level differential for on/off control of one or twopumps, valves, or other devices through two SPDT relays. Also fea-tured are two additional programmable alarm contacts with frontalarm light indication. The MPC is flexible and incorporates a user-friendly programmingmenu. The front face meets NEMA 4X for outdoor panel mounting.So many features are combined into the MPC that it eliminatesmany components in a pump control system.

NEW FEATURES• Alarms can be programmed for output indication of pump seal

failure or over temperature.• Selectable time delay, for pump two, on power up to prevent

both pumps from starting at the same time. If power is lost, upon regaining power a time delay of up to 60 seconds can be selected to prevent too large of a current draw.

FEATURES• Selectable pump alternation when used with two pumps to

minimize pump wear. With alternation “on” a seal failure or over temperature condition will force the non-failed pump to lead status and stop alternation.

• When used with a submersible pump including a moisture sensor the MPC has alarm light indication of seal failure.

• When used with a pump including a thermostat the MPC has alarm light indication of pump over temperature and removes the pump from service. The Pump can be brought back into service automatically or by manual reset when the pump has cooled down.

• Integral 24 VDC power supply for level transmitter.• Displays pump run time from a front panel button.• Test System function that simulates the process input to

insure the pumps are operating or to test programming. • User selectable security lock-out of programming and/or set

points.• Process input retransmission as a current (4 to 20 mA)

MODELS

The Series PS Proximity Sensors are noninvasive sensors idealfor level detection, position indicating and counting applications. Ca-pacitive type sensors detect electrically conducting and nonconductingmaterials, liquids, solids, or powders and include a sensitivity adjust-ment to differentiate between various materials. Inductive sensors de-tect ferrous or nonferrous metals only. A bright LED indicates thestate of the output switch. Sensors feature short circuit, reverse po-larity, and transient protection. Small size and threaded body make in-stallation easy. Inductive sensors are embeddable (can be mountedflush). Capacitive sensors are environmentally protected to IP65 andInductive sensors are protected to IP68. Units include two fixing,screwdriver, and operating manual.

The Series TLI Tank Level Indicator provides a visual indica-tion of the height of liquid contained in a tank. The 1/2-foot unit canalso be used as a sight flow tube when mounting in a pipeline. TheTLI series utilizes a double wall construction to indicate the levelof corrosive or ultra-pure liquids and is available with PVC,Polypropylene, or Teflon® fittings and 1/2˝ or 3/4˝ NPT threads.Viton® seals are standard. All units are hydrostatically tested to400 psi (27.6 bar).
