June 30, 2012 (WEEK 17, MLS Game #153) 7:30 p.m. CT (KPRC-2; TCN-Phi) The Houston Dynamo and Philadelphia Union face off for the first time this season when the Eastern Conference clubs clash Saturday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. Union are undefeated all-time in league play vs. Houston. They won both meetings at Robertson Stadium, including a 1-0 victory last April, while playing to two draws at PPL Park.
But the Dynamo won both legs of last year’s Eastern Conference Semifinal Series, a 2-1 win in Chester followed by a 1-0 victory in Houston, on their way to MLS Cup 2011.
Coaches record: John Hackworth vs. HOU: first game … Dominic Kinnear v PHI: P4 W0 L2 D2 HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo saw their road winless streak extended to eight games, going down to a 4-2 defeat by the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening at Stade Saputo. The Dynamo are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points from 15 games. LAST MATCH
The Impact led after just four minutes. Felipe released Sanna Nyassi into space behind the Houston defense, and as he tried to round Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall, he stumbled and fell but had time to lift his head and see the ball somehow trickle into the empty net.
The Dynamo were level, though, in the 16th minute after Patrice Bernier tripped Colin Clark on the edge of the box. From the free kick, Brad Davis unleashed a left footed curler towards the top right corner which Donovan Ricketts could not fully stop.
Yet five minutes later the Impact were back in front. Jeb Brovsky released Justin Mapp on the left of the box, where he crossed towards Davy Arnaud who outjumped Corey Ashe to nod the ball home.
But just before halftime the score was again level. Brian Ching played an exquisite through ball and Will Bruin lashed it home from inside the area.
The Impact came out after the break by winning a long series of corner kick, one of which produced the eventual winner as Hassoun Camara volleyed home at the back post.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
The Dynamo's Geoff Cameron then conceded a penalty which Bernier duly converted to make it 4-2 in the 67th minute. The visitors ended the game a man short after Adam Moffat was shown a straight red card for a rough foul on Felipe in the 73rd minute.
Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that came back from two goals down for a 3-3 draw with Toronto FC at BBVA Compass Stadium. Je-Vaughn Watson came into the midfield for Luiz Camargo, and Brian Ching started up top for Macoumba Kandji.
HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Colin Clark (Brian Ownby 62), Adam Moffat (sent off 73), Je-Vaughn Watson (Luiz Camargo 51), Brad Davis - Will Bruin, Brian Ching (Warren Creavalle 81).
TEAM NEWS The Dynamo are now winless in their last eight away matches, after winning their first two to start a long
season-opening road swing. They are still unbeaten in their new BBVA Compass Stadium. “I don’t think I handled the team correctly after Wednesday night,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear.
We looked tired and I think that’s down to my team selection. Every once in a while the coach has to stand up and say the defeat is on him and I have no problems doing that tonight. I coached and picked the game very poorly tonight.”
Since back-to-back shutouts May 12 and 15 vs. D.C. United and Portland, the Dynamo have conceded 15 goals in their last six games. The seven goals allowed over the two games vs. Toronto and Montréal mark the most allowed over a two-game stretch since the club moved to Houston.
“This is new territory for the guys that are back there right now,” defender Bobby Boswell said. “We’ve been pretty stingy and I think we’ve gotten a little loose lately. There’s no excuse for it. To give up seven goals in two games is definitely not a good thing.”
For the third time in four games, the Dynamo conceded the opening goal in the first 15 minutes. They’ve allowed 12 goals in the opening half-hour of games – by far the most in MLS (the six in the opening 15 minutes is tied with San Jose). They’ve allowed 13 first-half goals, also tied for most in the league.
“It’s not a question of if we can succeed, we know we can and we have the history that shows it,” goalkeeper Tally Hall said. “It’s about coming together, being on the same page and covering for each other better. When we start doing that we’ll start cutting down the holes. To have a week like that, or two weeks going back to the Vancouver game, where the defense is extremely porous it’s extremely frustrating. But it’s a unit that we know can succeed and can be one of the best in MLS.”
“It's team defending,” said Kinnear. “When you don’t put pressure on the ball, there are good enough players in this league that can put together the right passes. If we talk early, and are decisive with our communication we can cut down on running. It’s a little out of character for us but it’s a reality.”
Will Bruin has scored in three consecutive games and has five goals in the last six matches after scoring in the 4-2 loss at Montréal. Of Bruin’s nine goals, six have come on the road.
“I think he was tired of us defenders talk a lot of trash about being Golden Boot winners,” said defender Bobby Boswell. “He’s made it tough for anyone to catch him this year. I think last year he felt like he could’ve scored a lot more goals than he did. I think he’s finding himself in front of the goal and this year he’s putting them away.”
Brian Ching recorded his third assist this season on Bruin’s goal. “We’re starting to read each other more and more and feel more comfortable,” Bruin said. “I know what he likes to do and he knows what I like to do, so we’re starting and get that good partnership going.”
The Dynamo were without starting Jamaican international fullback Jermaine Taylor, who missed his second game in a row with a hip flexor strain.
“It hurts because he’s not available and maybe you can move some guys in and out if you have him,” Kinnear said. “But saying that, they broke well on us and we didn’t have enough energy to step on the ball or step out on them. I think we should’ve had a fresher team on the field.”
PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union put an end to their winless streak at six games in emphatic fashion, rolling to a 4-0 win against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at PPL Park. Union are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 13 games. LAST MATCH
Union took the lead with the first opening-minute goal in club history. Raymon Gaddis chased down a long ball and played the ball across the face of goal, where Lionard Pajoy managed to keep the ball in play. Jack McInerney latched onto the loose ball lashing a shot into the back of the net from close range.
McInerney showed off his poaching ability again just before the end of the first. A Freddy Adu service in the 43rd minute took a deflection and found defender Carlos Valdés, whose attempt on net was stopped. McInerney, though, was there to gobble up the rebound.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Union made the lead 3-0 with about 20 minutes to play. Substitute Antoine Hoppenot made a nifty cutback move in the box and was taken down by SKC defender Aurélien Collin, drawing a penalty kick, which converted by Pajoy.
Then, in the 87th minute, Hoppenot grabbed a goal of his own when Michael Farfan sent him in alone on goal, giving the forward time and space to loft a shot over KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.
Union interim manager John Hackworth made two changes to the team that lost 1-0 to D.C. United at PPL Park. Raymon Gaddis came into the back four for Sheanon Williams, and Lionard Pajoy returned from suspension in place of Josue Martinez.
PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-4-2): Zac MacMath - Raymon Gaddis, Amobi Okugo, Carlos Valdes, Gabriel Farfan - Freddy Adu (Antoine Hoppenot 59), Michael Lahoud, Brian Carroll, Michael Farfan - Lionard Pajoy, Jack McInerney (Keon Daniel 73).
TEAM NEWS The victory was the first for interim manager John Hackworth, in his second game in charge after taking over
for Peter Nowak. “I hope it’s one of many. So I’m not going to get too high. I’m not going to get too low,” Hackworth said. “You
know I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve had teams where I’ve started off and it’s been a long time before I got my first win. You just have to manage it and believe in it. The guys in the locker room get full credit for sure.”
Union put an end to a seven-game winless run with the victory, by far the biggest offensive output of the season for the club. They had scored three goals total in their last five games.
“I don’t think we gave up any true counters, and I think that’s a credit to our back line to keep it in front of them,” said Hackworth. “We made some really good tackles to prevent that. The midfielders took out passing lanes, and when you see that when they get into their run and gun up and down game they really like to play. … Just happy we can produce a result like that and score four goals.”
A week after making his first start of 2012, in the first game under Hackworth, Jack McInerney recorded his first career two-goal game, sending Union on their way.
“I’m not that fast, and I’m not that big,” McInerney said. “So I need to put myself in good spots. To get two sitters tonight shows what kind of forward I am.”
McInerney’s opener, officially recorded after 59 seconds, was the earliest goal scored in Union club history. It was the fifth first-minute goal scored this season in MLS.
“Right now, [my confidence] is as high as it can be,” McInerney said. “It’s been a rough season for me but two starts and two goals feels good.”
Coming off the substitutes’ bench for a third straight stint of about a half-hour in league play, rookie Antoine Hoppenot scored his first MLS goal to close out the scoring.
“We knew Antoine was going to create some problems and be dangerous,” Hackworth said. “I’m surprised he went for the chip again. But that’s confidence for you.” Said Hoppenot: “It’s great for me. I get to come in with 30 minutes left and their defenders are dead tired after chasing Jack [McInerney] for 60 minutes. … They don’t want to run after me. I love it.”
It was Union’s first shutout since April 21 vs. Chivas USA, the last of three consecutive clean sheets. “We prepared well and the players certainly took the mentality that we’re not going to give that up any more. It’s
been an Achilles heel all year,” said Hackworth. “It took a lot of pride in that, and was lead the way by Carlos [Valdes]. I mean Carlos was the man in the air in the box tonight. Zac MacMath did a great job coming off his line tonight to help. Gabe Farfan was beating Kei Kamara headers. You know there’s a little bit of heart and soul in everything they’re doing tonight, so that was great.”
On Tuesday, Union announced the signing of defender Bakary Soumare. He was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year honors in 2008 with the Chicago Fire, playing for the club from 2007-09. He was transferred to French side Boulogne in August 2009 and appeared in 65 games for the club, before being loaned in January to German club Karlsruher SC. He has been capped by Mali 13 times.

DYNAMO VS. UNION – DYNAMO HOST PHILADELPHIA IN 2011 PLAYOFF REMATCH The Houston Dynamo (5‐5‐5; 20 points) host the Philadelphia Union (3‐8‐2; 11 points) on Saturday at BBVA Compass
Stadium. The Dynamo lost at Montreal, 4‐2, on Saturday while the Union enjoyed a 4‐0 home win over Sporting Kansas City.
This is the first of three meetings between Houston and Philadelphia in 2012, with Houston visiting PPL Park on Sept. 23 and
the Union returning to Houston on Oct. 20. Saturday’s match marks the third of 14 consecutive games for the Dynamo against
the Eastern Conference.
Houston vs. Philadelphia The Dynamo have never defeated the Union in the regular season (0‐2‐2), but beat Philadelphia in the 2011 playoffs, 3‐1, on
aggregate. Houston earned a 2‐1 road win in the first leg of the 2011 playoff series, with goals from Calen Carr and Andre
Hainault sandwiched around a goal from Philadelphia’s Sebastian Le Toux. Houston sealed the series win with a 1‐0 home
triumph on a goal from Brian Ching in the final Dynamo game at Robertson Stadium. In the 2011 regular season, Philadelphia
snatched a 1‐0 opening day win on March 11 at Robertson Stadium on a 5th‐minute goal from Danny Califf. In the return game
at PPL Park on Aug. 6, Geoff Cameron provided an 85th‐minute equalizer for a 1‐1 draw after Jack McInerney staked the
Union to an early lead. DYNAMO PROJECTED STARTING LINEUP (4‐4‐2, Right‐Left)

DYNAMO NOTES
Dynamo newcomer Oscar Boniek García set for debut: Honduran midfielder Oscar Boniek García is eligible to make his
Dynamo debut Saturday against Philadelphia after the international transfer window opened on Wednesday. The Dynamo
signed Garcia on June 7. The 27‐year‐old Designated Player has played for Honduran powerhouse C.D. Olimpia since 2007
after his first tenure with the club from 2003‐06. With García, Olimpia captured the 2011‐12 Honduran League Apertura and
Clausura championships. The midfielder debuted for the Honduras national team in 2005 and has 69 appearances for his
country, including five appearances in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Dynamo will face Olimpia in CONCACAF
Champions League group play on Aug. 30 in Honduras and Oct. 23 in Houston.
Bruin bags ninth goal: Dynamo forward Will Bruin scored his ninth goal of the season with a first‐half equalizer in
Saturday’s 4‐2 setback at Montreal. The second‐year forward is tied for third in the MLS Golden Boot race with Thierry
Henry and trails Chris Wondolowski (13) and Kenny Cooper (11).
Bruin in historic Dynamo territory: Bruin’s 9 goals are the most for a Dynamo player since Brian Ching set a franchise
record with 13 goals in 2008. Bruin has also reached 9 goals in the fastest number of games (15) in team history. Ching
reached 9 goals in Houston’s 16th game in 2006, but Ching missed six of those games due to U.S. men’s national team duties
for the 2006 World Cup. Ching scored his ninth goal of 2006 in his tenth game of the season. Bruin’s 9 goals in 2012 have
come in a 12‐game stretch (April 15 at Chicago to present). The next two best goal‐scoring stretches in Dynamo history are
Ching in 2008, when he scored 9 goals in his first 18 games played (the 9 goals came in a 12‐game stretch) and Dwayne De
Rosario, who scored 9 goals in a 21‐game span in 2006.
Three in a row for Bruin: Will Bruin has scored in three consecutive games (6/16, 6/20, 6/23) for the second time this season
(4/15, 4/21, 4/28), with four goals in each three‐game scoring streak. He is the first Dynamo player with a pair of three‐
game scoring streaks in the same season, and just the second player to record two streaks overall (Ching). His current
streak marks the sixth time a Dynamo player has scored in three consecutive games (Bruin 2012 (twice); Ching 2006, 2008;
Joseph Ngwenya 2007; Stuart Holden 2009). No Dynamo player has ever scored in four consecutive games.
More Bruin: Bruin now has 14 regular season goals in his two‐year career. With his next goal, he will tie Stuart Holden for
fourth on the franchise list. Bruin has already surpassed his 2011 total for shots on goal, with 24 this year after posting 23
shots on goal in 2011.
Champions League schedule announced: The Dynamo learned its schedule in Group 3 of the 2012‐2013 CONCACAF
Champions League on June 22. Houston will open group play with two road games – Aug. 22 at C.D. FAS of El Salvador
and Aug. 30 at C.D. Olimpia of Honduras. The Dynamo will host FAS on Sept. 20 and Olimpia on Oct. 23 at BBVA
Compass Stadium. The group winner will advance to the quarterfinals, set for March 2013. The Dynamo qualified for the
tournament by advancing to the 2011 MLS Cup Final. This is the fifth appearance for the Dynamo in the regional
championship, including semifinal runs in the 2007 and 2008 Champions Cup tournaments. It is the first appearance for the
Dynamo in Champions League since they advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008‐2009.
Davis even with De Ro on goals list: With his free kick goal against Montreal on Saturday, Brad Davis reached 24 regular
season goals with the Dynamo to move into a tie with Dwayne De Rosario for second on the franchise list.
Ching ties Mullan for second on assists chart: With his assist on Saturday at Montreal, Brian Ching reached 19 regular
season assists with the Dynamo to move into a tie for second with Brian Mullan on the franchise list.
Boswell is Mr. Reliable: Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell has played full time in 25 consecutive MLS matches (playoffs
included) dating to Sept. 14, 2011 at Columbus. The center back is the only Dynamo field player to play every minute of
every MLS game in 2012. Boswell has now started 126 regular season games with the Dynamo and will tie Brian Mullan for
third on the franchise list with his next start.
Corey Ashe has 183 appearances for the Dynamo in all competitions and will tie Brian Mullan for second on the franchise
list with his next appearance.
Cameron Climbing: With Geoff Cameron’s start at Montreal on Saturday he reached 98 MLS regular season starts, tying
Wade Barrett for sixth on the Dynamo all‐time list.
Hall sets goalkeeper consecutive starts record: Goalkeeper Tally Hall set a franchise record for consecutive starts by a
goalkeeper with his 47th consecutive starts against FC Dallas on June 16. He broke the record of 46 games set by Pat Onstad
from Sept. 13, 2008 – May 13, 2010. Hall started all 34 games in 2011 and the first 15 games in 2012, pushing the new record
to 49 games. Hall has the second longest active streak of consecutive starts among MLS goalkeepers.
Wonderful vs. West: With the 2‐1 win over FC Dallas on June 16, the Dynamo improved to 4‐2‐1 on the season against the
heralded Western Conference. Houston has wins against FC Dallas, LA Galaxy, San Jose and Chivas USA.
Ching third on Dynamo games played list: Ching started on June 16 vs. FC Dallas for his 137th MLS regular season game
with the Dynamo. He passed Brian Mullan and Pat Onstad for third on Houston’s all‐time regular season games list.
Second Half Savants: Houston’s 4‐2 defeat at Montreal on Saturday was the first game it has lost when tied or leading at
halftime. The Dynamo are now 3‐1‐4 in games in which they were tied at halftime and 2‐0 when leading at halftime, for a 5‐
1‐4 mark when tied or leading at the break. Houston is 0‐4‐1 when trailing at the interval after its comeback draw with
Toronto on June 20.
Possession: Despite playing their first seven games on the road, the Dynamo have won the possession battle in 12 of 15
games on the season. Houston lost the possession battle, 53‐47%, at Montreal, had a 63‐37% possession advantage vs.
Toronto, 54% possession against FC Dallas, 54% at Vancouver, 60% vs. LA, 62% at New England, 60% vs. Portland, 56% vs.
D.C., 53% at New York, 54% at D.C., a 49‐51% disadvantage at Columbus, 55% at Chicago, 56% at Seattle, a disadvantage
(48‐52%) at San Jose, and 53% at Chivas USA.
Cameron, Hainault, Taylor, Watson return from national duty: Three members of Houston’s heralded backline and regular
starting midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson returned from national duty for the June 16 match against FC Dallas after missing
the June 10 game at Vancouver. Geoff Cameron played the second half off USA’s 1‐1 draw at Guatemala on June 12. The
center back also played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. Scotland on May 26. It was Cameron’s third national team call‐up.
Andre Hainault was called in by Canada and played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. the U.S. and 90 minutes in both of
Canada’s Olympic qualifiers against Cuba and Honduras to reach 28 caps. Watson started three matches for Jamaica,
including a 2‐1 win over Guatemala and a 0‐0 draw vs. Antigua & Barbuda in a pair of qualifying matches. Taylor did not
appear in any of the three games for Jamaica.
Clark hits 125 MLS games: Dynamo midfielder Colin Clark played in his 125th career regular season game on Saturday.
Ching reaches 200: Brian Ching played in his 200th MLS game (pre‐Dynamo years included) on June 10 at Vancouver.
Hainault hits 100 starts: Andre Hainault started against the Galaxy on May 26 for his 100th career start in all competitions
for the Dynamo. He scored with a header in the 57th minute for his second game‐winner of the season.
75 assists for Davis: Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis recorded his 75th assist for the Dynamo in all competitions with his
corner kick that Andre Hainault headed in for the winning goal vs. the Galaxy on May 26. Davis is Houston’s all‐time assist
leader.
First Comeback Win: The Dynamo recorded a 2‐1 win on May 26 over the LA Galaxy for their first come‐from‐behind win
of the season. Prior to the Galaxy game, the Dynamo were 0‐3‐1 on the season when allowing the first goal of the game.
East Coast Bias: Beginning with the match against Toronto FC on June 20, the Dynamo will play 14 consecutive games
against teams in the Eastern Conference. Houston is 1‐3‐4 vs. the Eastern Conference, but six of the eight games were
played on the road. The next time the Dynamo face a team from the Western Conference is Sept. 6, when they host Real Salt
Lake.
Hainault’s game‐winners: Defender Andre Hainault’s 57th‐minute winner vs. the Galaxy on May 26 was his second game‐
winning goal of the season. Hainault buried a shot from 12 yards in the second minute of stoppage time on opening day, a
1‐0 win at Chivas USA on March 11, for his first game‐winner this season.
Daytime Dominance: Houston’s 3‐1 loss at Vancouver on June 10 was its first loss in a day game this season, with its record
dropping to 4‐1. The Dynamo have daytime wins over Chivas USA, San Jose, D.C. United and the Galaxy. The Dynamo are
1‐4‐5 at night, but eight of the ten night games have been on the road. Houston has two more day games this season (July 28
at Toronto FC and Sept. 29 at Philadelphia).
Cameron’s streak ends: Geoff Cameron missed the May 26 game with the Galaxy while playing for the U.S. in its 5‐1 win
over Scotland. It was the first MLS game that Cameron missed since May 4, 2011 vs. Colorado. Prior to May 26, Cameron
had started and played full time in 40 consecutive matches (playoffs included), the longest streak among Houston field
players in team history. Cameron played 3,576 consecutive minutes in MLS play (playoffs included) before his latest
absence. In a similar feat, Brad Davis’ streak of 45 consecutive starts was broken at Chicago on April 15 due to a calf strain.
BBVA Compass Stadium opener: The Dynamo opened the 13th soccer‐specific stadium in Major League Soccer on May 12.
On a gorgeous, 82‐degree day in front of a sell‐out crowd of 22,039, the Dynamo honored past legends, including Wade
Barrett, Pat Onstad, Eddie Robinson and Craig Waibel in a pregame ceremony that included the unveiling of 2006 and
2007 MLS Cup championship banners. Brad Davis provided a signature opening moment, delivering a beautiful, curling 30‐
yard strike for the game‐winning goal in the 67th minute.
Clutch: Luiz Camargo’s 87th‐minute equalizer at New England on May 19 was Houston’s third late goal on the road this
season. Brian Ching’s equalizer in the 81st minute at Columbus on April 21 and Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into
stoppage time at Chivas USA on March 11 were also reminiscent of 2011 for the Dynamo. Last year, Houston scored 14
goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).
Ashe moves to second on franchise list: With his start on May 15 vs. Portland, Corey Ashe played in his 137th MLS regular
season game to move to second on the Dynamo regular season games franchise list, passing Brian Mullan and Pat Onstad.
Carr Centennial: Calen Carr’s start at New England on May 19 was his 100th MLS regular season appearance.
Davis reaches 25 Dynamo goals with BBVA Compass opener: Brad Davis’ sensational 30‐yard strike against D.C. United
on May 12 was his 25th goal in all competitions with the Dynamo. Davis is the third Dynamo player to reach 25 goals,
joining Brian Ching (64) and Dwayne De Rosario (32). It was Davis’ 37th MLS regular season goal.
First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA on March 11 erased bad memories of the 2011 road schedule. It
took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐6‐9 start, the Dynamo defeated FC
Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24.
Six years after the club’s first match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster: Brian Ching and Brad
Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an assistant coach with the team’s Youth
Academy and as a color analyst on TV broadcasts.
UP NEXT: DYNAMO WELCOME CHICAGO FIRE FOR MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT The Dynamo host the Chicago Fire on Tuesday for Military Appreciation Night, presented by Budweiser. The first meeting
between the two clubs ended in 1 ‐1 draw in the 66th minute due to a lightning storm on April 15 in Chicago.

UNION WELCOME BAKARY SOUMARE
The Philadelphia Union announced Tuesday that former
Major League Soccer Defender of the Year finalist Bakary Soumare
has signed with the team. Originally drafted by the Chicago Fire in
the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, Soumare comes to the Union from
French side US Boulogne. The center back will be eligible to play
for the Union in Saturday’s game against the Houston Dynamo.
The Union made a trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC,
giving the Union the top spot in the MLS allocation ranking and
Vancouver’s Second Round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. In
exchange, the Union parted with their first-round selection in the
2013 MLS SuperDraft, the club’s 12th position in the league’s
allocation ranking, as well as allocation money.
A 2008 MLS Defender of the Year finalist, Soumare
excelled as a central defender for the Chicago Fire in 2008 and
2009 after originally being drafted out of the University of Virginia
as a defensive midfielder. He played in 63 games for the Fire,
earning the club’s Defender of the Year title in 2008, a spot in the
MLS Best IX and helped the squad to the Western Conference
Finals. In 2009, he was named to the MLS All-Star team, replacing
Brian Ching.
In August of 2009, Soumare was transferred to French
First Division side Boulogne. The 6-foot-4 native of Mali became a
regular for Boulogne, appearing in 65 games and occasionally
serving as captain. In January of 2012, he was loaned to German
club Karlsruher SC, where he made seven appearances.
Soumare has been capped by Mali 13 times since
deciding to play for his native country in 2008. He has played in a
string of World Cup qualifying matches and the Africa Cup of
Nations.
KAI HERDLING RETURNS TO GERMANY The Philadelphia Union announced midfielder/forward
Kai Herdling will return to Hoffenheim 1899 two weeks ahead of
schedule. Herdling’s loan was set to expire on June 30 but has
been released early for the start of Hoffenheim’s preseason
training this week.
Herdling joined the Union via loan on April 16 and started
in three of four MLS matches, logging a total of 212 minutes.
Herdling’s lone goal came in a friendly against the Harrisburg City
Islanders on June 14.
The German international played the first half of the
2009 season with SV Waldhof Mannheim of the Regionalliga Süd,
where he scored 10 goals in 14 appearances. He returned to 1899
Hoffenheim in January 2010 and has appeared once for the first
team since. Before signing professionally, Herdling featured for the
youth sides of SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim (1996-2000) & SpVgg
Neckarsteinach (2000-2002).
U.S. OPEN CUP UPDATE The Philadelphia Union took on the Harrisburg City
Islanders for a second time in two weeks at home on Tuesday in
the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. Philadelphia won 5-2
against their affiliates after losing the first meeting 3-2 at
Hersheypark Stadium in a friendly on June 12th.
The Union advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating
the Rochester Rhinos 3-0 on May 29th in the third round and in
the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, the Union defeated D.C.
United 2-1 on June 5th.
The Union are set to take on Sporting Kansas City on July
11, in a rematch of a 4-0 win for the Union over their Eastern
Conference foe. The Union are now two wins away from its first
ever U.S. Open Cup title and is the first Pennsylvania-based team
to reach the semifinals since United German Hungarians in 1993.
PPL PARK TURNS TWO June 27, 2012 marked the second year anniversary of the inaugural opening of PPL Park.
PPL Park is a state-of-the-art 18,500-seat Major League Soccer stadium serving as the home of the Philadelphia Union. In the team’s first home game on July 27, 2010, the Union hosted the Seattle Sounders and earned a 3-1 victory in PPL Park’s MLS soccer debut.
ALL JACKED UP Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney has become an overnight sensation among the Union fan base. After not suiting up for a game the entire month of May, under new manager John Hackworth’s reign, the forward has started two straight games and rewarded his new coach with a 1-1 record and two goals in a win against Sporting Kansas City. The 19-year old McInerney has played 240 minutes in the 2012 season out of a total of 1148 played for the Union his entire professional career. His two goals on Saturday marked his fifth and sixth career goals with the team and the only goals scored for the forward this season. The Union selected McInerney with the seventh overall selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. A Generation adidas signee, the Alpharetta, GA native bypassed the college ranks, coming to the Union directly from Cobb Futbol Club and ranks, coming to the Union directly from Cobb Futbol Club and the U-17 USMNT. As a youth international, McInerney appeared in all four games for the U.S. in the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, scoring two goals.
GADDIS SUSPENDED Union defender Raymon Gaddis will not be eligible for
the match against the Houston Dynamo due to an extra fine and suspension levied by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for a reckless tackle committed in the 25th minute of play against Sporting Kansas City.
Philadelphia Union at Houston Dynamo – June 30, 2012 – 8:30 P.M. EST

BBVA Compass Stadium – Houston, TX
Gaddis has started in all eight games he has played for a total of 659 minutes and with Saturday’s yellow card being his second of the season. Gaddis will be back to the possible line-up for the Union’s game against the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center on July 4.
JACK SETTING RECORDS In Saturday’s win over Sporting Kansas City, forward Jack
McInerney set a franchise record for the fastest goal ever scored for the Union with a goal in the first minute. The previous record was held by Gabriel Farfan with a goal in the second minute on May 28, 2011 against Toronto FC.
The play started when Ray Gaddis whipped a dangerous cross to the far post where a crashing Pajoy had too tight of an angle to finish but managed to keep the ball alive. Pajoy's touch put the ball just a few yards in front of Jimmy Nielsen's goal, and McInerney beat the Kansas City goalkeeper to the ball to bury a shot into the top of the net. This would be only one of the two first half goals the forward would tally as a free kick by Adu rebounded off several Union players before being cleaned up by McInerney in the 42nd minute.
TURNING THE CORNER The Philadelphia Union won their first MLS match after going 0-5-1 in the month of May and early part of June. The last three points the Union earned in league play, came during an away game against Chivas USA on April 21 in Carson, California. During a busy international break, the Union posted an impressive 3-1 record with wins over the Rochester Rhinos and D.C. United in the 2012 U.S. Open Cup. While the third victory came against Reading United in a friendly on June 9, the Union posted a loss to the Harrisburg City Islanders in a friendly on June 12 at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Union posted a 4-0 win over a tough Eastern Conference Sporting Kansas City team on June 23 and three days later, the Union would not be without redemption with the Union defeating the Harrisburg City Islanders 5-2 in a quarterfinal rematch for the opportunity to go to
the semifinals of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup on June 26.
ANTOINE HOPPENOT Rookie forward Antoine Hoppenot has appeared in four
matches this season, including three straight dating back to the month of May. In the 31 minutes played on Saturday, Hoppenot recorded his first MLS career goal in the 87th minute against Sporting Kansas City.
The 21-year old Hoppenot has played 85 total minutes in the 2012 season recording four shots and one shot on goal. The Union signed the forward on February 21, 2012, after the forward was taken 51st overall in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Hoppenot was a three time First-Team All-Ivy selection and was ranked 20th on the Top Drawer Soccer Men's National Top 100 list as a senior. In 2010, he was named Ivy League Player of the Year and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, as well as garnered Second-Team All-American honors.
UNION TIE FRANCHISE RECORD In Philadelphia’s match against Sporting Kansas City, the
Union tied a franchise record for largest margin of victory with four. The 4-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on June 23 was the first time that they won a game with four or more goals since the Union defeated Toronto FC 6-2 on May 28, 2011.

LAST MLS MATCH Behind two goals from Jack McInerney followed by
insurance tallies from Lionard Pajoy and Antoine Hoppenot, the
Union earned their first points of the John Hackworth era,
topping Sporting KC 4-0 Saturday night at PPL Park.
It was a dream start for the Union, who entered the
game averaging an MLS-worst 0.67 goals per game. Moments
into the contest, Ray Gaddis whipped a dangerous cross to the
far post where a crashing Pajoy had too tight of an angle to
finish but managed to keep the ball alive. Pajoy's touch put the
ball just a few yards in front of Jimmy Nielsen's goal, and
McInerney beat the Kansas City goalkeeper to the ball to bury a
shot into the top of the net.
Freddy Adu put a free kick into the danger area, where
a lunging Carlos Valdes deflected the ball on goal. Nielsen made
the initial save, but McInerney was there to put in the rebound
for a 2-0 advantage.
The Union added an insurance goal in the 81st minute
on a Pajoy penalty kick. Pajoy sent Nielsen diving in the wrong
direction and buried his spot kick to put the Union up 3-0.
Hoppenot was rewarded for his efforts with a goal of
his own in the 87th minute, when a ball was lofted over Nielsen
for the fourth Union goal and the first of his MLS career.

LAST MATCH VS. HOUSTON DYNAMO(MLS Playoffs)
Philadelphia Union’s dream to hoist the MLS Cup at
the end of their sophomore season ended in Houston at the
hands of Brad Davis and the Dynamo. After a 2-1 loss at PPL
Park in the first leg of the series, Philadelphia fell victim to a
Brian Ching goal that came deep into stoppage time of the first
half. Courtesy of a Brad Davis cross, Philadelphia went into the
half down 1-0 and were unable to surmount the deficit.
Philadelphia did have their chances in the second half.
Veljko Paunovic forced Houston’s Tally Hall to make a diving
save in the 59th-minute and in the 66th-minute Peter Nowak
made a triple substitution to bring on Justin Mapp, Freddy Adu
and Roger Torres, which immediately increased the offensive
presence on the pitch. Shortly after the substitution Freddy
Adu had a good look at goal but was caught between a decision
to cross or shoot, leading to a missed opportunity.
The loss ended Philadelphia’s second season, but
heads were held high after a successful campaign. Philadelphia
made their first franchise post season appearance and finished
third in the Eastern Conference. The young squad will look to
draw on the experience of last season as they begin the 2012
season.
