    Rory Golden creates multi-layered figurativework that deals in an intelligent andsometimes provocative way with issuessurrounding race, violence, sexuality, anddesire. His work takes us to the deep end ofour psychic pool where we navigate thepsychological complex and ambiguous watersof our lives, where erotic tension and sexualfantasy are ironically paired with theiropposites: struggle and the potential forviolence.

    In his early work, Golden achieved ametaphorical and allegorical engagement with

    history and incidents of violence motivatedboth by race and homophobia. In the currentseries, nude black males set against abackdrop that suggest danger, function as acultural screen onto which our fears andfantasies are projected.

    The House of Chance and Mischief is

    based on a recurring dream of Rene Stouts,

    in which she is walking through a familiar

    house and suddenly encounters a door that

    leads to new and mysterious rooms. Stoutunderstands the house of her dream to be a

    metaphor for the self, and the newly revealed

    rooms to represent an expanding awareness

    of a world inside and outside of that self.Her dream, the challenges of friendship andfamily, and current events comprise thecontent of Stouts fourth exhibition atHemphill. The show is a cacophonous partywhere guests peer into the lives of thecharacters developed throughout Stoutsoeuvre.

Throughwords, music, and story Lorenzo Dow Turnerdiscovered in the late 1930s that the Gullahpeople of Georgia and South Carolina stillpossessed parts of the culture and languageof their enslaved ancestors, which had longbeen believed lost. Highlights of the exhibitwill include rare photographs, recordings, andartifacts collected by Dr. Turnerand housed

    From an early version of the EmancipationProclamation to correspondence betweenMalcolm X and Alex Haley, Bernard and ShirleyKinsey have amassed a trove of rare artifactsand artwork that spans four centuries andembodies the hardships and triumphs of theAfrican American experience.

    Organized into four themes, the exhibitionhonors the lives of famous African Americans likeFrederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr., aswell as those people whose identities have been

    lost to history, like a young girl featured in anambrotype portrait, circa 1855, whose nameremains unknown.
