The New Mexico National Guard Youth ChalleNGe
Academy is a volunteer program for 16 to 18 year
old teens that are at risk of dropping out, or who
have already dropped out of high school. The
program is open to all students, without regard to
race, sex, religious affiliations, or household in-
come. The program requires a 17 1/2 month
commitment and is divided into three phases.
ACCLIMATION
The first two weeks of the residential phase
concentrates on program assimilation. The daily
training schedule includes drill and ceremony,
physical training and life coping skills.
Additionally, career development classes prepare
them for employment, continuing education or
military service.
POST RESIDENTIAL PHASE
The graduates continue their academic studies,
enlist in the military or join the workforce. For 12
months following the residential phase, cadets are
REQUIRED to meet with their Mentor each month
during the 12 month post residential phase. The
National Guard Youth ChalleNGe program is the
second largest mentoring program in the nation.
RESIDENTIAL PHASE
The remaining twenty weeks of the residential
phase concentrates on the eight core components:
Academic Excellence, Health & Hygiene,
Leadership/Followership, Job Skills, Life Coping
Skills, Physical Fitness, Responsible Citizenship, and
Service to Community. Cadets will attend daily
academic classes designed to prepare them to take
and pass the GED (HiSET) exam.
