Barcelona, Spain

● The promotion of a sustainable urban city structure together with the implementation of sustainable energy policies has ranked Barcelona among the Western world’s cities with the lowest CO2 emissions per capita (under 4 tones eCO2/year).

• The implementation of the Barcelona’s Solar Thermal Ordinance since the year 2.000 has multiplied per more than 40 the surface of solar thermal panels, currently reaching over 60.000 sq metres which represent a saving of over 8.836 tones of eCO2/year.

• Barcelona also promotes the installation of solar photovoltaic installations in municipal facilities like schools in order to fulfil a twofold function: the use of natural energy resources to produce electricity and the use of these installations for environmental education purposes.
