Our Mock Trial team is heading to the Nassau County Finals! Mock Trial is a state-wide competition, but the Nassau County section is particularly competitive. Congratulations to the entire team and advisor Ron Roaldsen. You can learn more at https://bre.is/JNTtaIhY1

Over 40 Wheatley and Willets Road students competed in the Long Island Regional competition of National History Day, with five students advancing to the State Finals competition in Cooperstown at the end of April. You can view photos and read the project descriptions at https://bre.is/t_klHEYhM

Our Wheatley Theatre Company produced four wonderful performances of The Wizard of Oz. Caitlin Calio (Class of 2014) directed this spectacular performance. We are so thankful for the many students (especially the Munchkins from North Side) and our adults who put so much time and energy into making this show such a wonderful success. After rave reviews, you can view some videos and photos of the show at https://bre.is/52NU6kf1D

Prior to our Saturday Matinee performance of The Wizard of Oz, our students and faculty served lunch to nearly eighty of our Senior Citizens. This well-attended luncheon is always a highlight of the weekend. You can view some of the photos at https://bre.is/wL8obFgGp

As you can see, it was a busy month! And we have much to look forward to in these coming weeks:

• 12 April: Big Band Night: Tri-M’s annual Puttin’ on the Ritz big band event will take place on Friday, 12 April at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. At this festive event, Wheatley’s Jazz Band entertains in our cafeteria while Tri‐M (our Music Honor Society) students serve food, dessert, and coffee. Prior to the music, be sure to stop by our Art Show in the Main Lobby, beginning at 6:00 pm. Please join us for this terrific evening!

• 16 - 17 April: Earth Week Festivities Begin: Our annual Earth Week begins on 16 April! We have a full slate of activities planned for these days! Students are particularly fond of our Earth Week Paperback Book Swap! Be sure to see the enclosed flyers for a listing of activities!

• 16 April: Mandatory Senior Parent Meeting (Option #1 – 7:00 pm): The first of these three mandatory meetings will be held on Tuesday, 16 April. The program is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. As a reminder, parents and their senior must attend at least one of the three different scheduled meetings. (Other Mandatory Senior Parent Meetings are: 1 May at 3:00 pm (Option #2) and 10 May at 7:00 am (Option #3).

• 11 April: District Culture Camp: The next iteration of these popular evenings takes place on Thursday at 7:00 pm. Hopefully, you registered already upon receipt of the email invitation.

• 30 April: District-wide Fine and Performing Arts Festival: Join us at Wheatley as we celebrate our students’ artistic accomplishments across all three schools! The evening will begin at 7:00 pm.

• 2 May: Simmons Awards: The annual Simmons Awards Evening recognizing excellence in our district takes place on Thursday, 2 May at 7:00 pm. Wheatley’s honoree this year is our wonderful Technology teacher/Set Designer/Life Skills assistant, Paul Chisholm. Come and celebrate with us! Admission is free!

• 6-17 May: Advanced Placement Examinations Begin: AP testing will take place from Monday, 7 May through Friday, 18 May. This can be a stressful time for students involved in AP courses, but it need not be so. Wheatley teachers offer a tremendous amount of review classes in preparation for the AP examinations — all above and beyond the regular meeting times of the course (and without cost to the district). Be sure to discuss attendance at these review classes (many of which have already started) with your child. I will send out a listing of review sessions on Friday.

• 24 May: Support our PTO! The PTO Bake Sale is coming on Friday, 24 May! We also need some assistance with the Senior Party! See the attached flyers for more information.

• Wheatley PTO Teacher of the Year. This prestigious recognition is given during our annual Academic Awards Evening. You can nominate a teacher using the enclosed form, which is also available through an online link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MSWL2ZG

As you can see, there is much to be done in the months ahead! I wish you all renewed energy and enthusiasm to take on the remaining months of this busy school year.

Warmly,
