SOURCE A: “Chronicles of Peru.” Pedro de Cieza de León (1520-1554) was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is known primarily for his history and description
of Peru, Crónicas del Perú.At the beginning of the new year the rulers of each village came to Cuzco, bringing their quipus [knotted ropes for
recordkeeping]. The quipus told how many births there had been during the year, and how many deaths. In this
way the Inca and the governors knew which of the Indians were poor, the women who had been widowed
[husbands have died], whether they were able to pay their taxes, and how many men they could count on in the
event of war, and many other things they considered highly important…
No one who was lazy or tried to live by the work of others was tolerated; everyone had to work. Thus on certain
days each lord [man] went to his lands and took the plow in hand and cultivated the earth, and did other things.
Even the Incas [leaders] themselves did this to set an example…

SOURCE C: Excerpt from a History of the New World, composed by Bernabe Cobo, a Spanish priest (before 1639).
It is amusing for the Spanish to see how barter [trade] and exchange are carried out...The Indian women place all their
merchandise in little mounds of goods...An Indian woman who comes to buy with corn, not money, sits down very
slowly near the seller and she makes a little mound of her corn. The seller looks at the corn and it seems like not enough.
She doesn’t say anything, nor does she make a gesture, she just keeps looking at it. The woman buying keeps her eyes
fixed on the seller, and she adds to her little mound until the seller is content with the price. From beginning to end,
neither of them says a word, even if it takes a half hour to reach
an agreement. The deal is done when the seller reaches out and
gathers the corn up by hand.
