Toowoomba is fast gaining a national and international reputation as a street art city, about to host its third First Coat festival. Flying Arts Alliance and USQ are joining forces with the crew behind First Coat to bring you ArtizPUBLIC@Toowoomba.
Over three full days young artists will take part in an inspiring program of contemporary street art styles delivered by experienced arts industry professionals and gain valuable insight into further training, education
and career opportunities in the arts.
ARTISTS:
Ian McCallum was heavily influenced
by graffiti and street culture during his
youth. He is now a professional artist and
sign writer interested in offering creative
opportunities for young people outside of
metropolitan areas.
Jordan Hart completed a Bachelor of Visual
Arts/Honors at the University of Southern
Queensland in 2007. Whilst balancing a
career as an arts teacher at Dalby State High
School, Jordan also exhibits in regional and
metropolitan art spaces.
Elysha Rei is a practicing visual artist,
curator and art event coordinator
currently residing in Brisbane. Elysha’s
passion for the arts extends from making,
exhibiting and curating art, to managing
cultural spaces and community events.
PROGRAM:
Say It and Spray It – Graff Art with artist Ian McCallum
Learn about colours, applications and finishing touches
of a graff piece which will transform your ideas into
works on canvas and walls. Shake and spray your design
or message in a comprehensive workshop that will
show you all the tips and tricks of the trade.
Cut It Out – Stencil Art with artist Jordan Hart
Learn the quick and effective art of street stencils to
create your own Banksy-inspired piece. From design
concept development, to cutting techniques and
stencilling surfaces, participants will be able to create
their own unique stencil identity.
Stick Around – Paste-Up Art with artist Elysha ReiTaking inspiration from street artists such as Swoon, JR, Ludo and Zilda, transport your designs to the worldwide gallery. Learn tips and tricks to creating the perfect paste-up piece using the best drawing, printing and painting materials, as well as wheat-paste mixing and installation skills.
First Coat Gallery Tour with Grace Dewar This tour provides insight into the large-scale murals from the First Coat Festival and the artists who produced them.
Artist Talk with Tarn McLean An insightful discussion with Tarn McLean, co-director
of Raygun Labs ARI and founder of START gallery and
creative space. Hear about this space run by students,
for students.
When is it?5-8 April 2016, Easter school holidays.
When do I arrive and depart?Participants to arrive by 5pm Tuesday 5 April.The program finishes at 6pm on Friday 8 April.
Where is it?On campus at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba.
Where do I stay?Locals can elect to be a residential participant, or to attend as a day partipant. Participants from other areas are welcome to join our residential program. Supervised accommodation and full board is provided. Accommodation is twin share at McGregor College, University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba. All meals are provided for residential participants, lunch is provided for day participants.
