OVERVIEW

Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest: Students can enter this category in addition to the drawing/still life, graphic design/logo, poster project contests, and art exhibition contests.

The Art Department will host a competition of high-school student sidewalk art to be made on Skills Day. Students do not have to be enrolled in a high school art class to enter. 2’ X 3’ spaces will be made available on the sidewalk on the east side of the Activities Center. Spaces will be assigned by number. Students can as a team of two students if desired.

y Acceptable subject matter may include anything that is appropriate for display to the general public in a school setting.

y Students may bring a design with them, chalk will be provided. Students will have from 8:30 am until 11 am to complete their design.

First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in each category. Points will be awarded on the following basis:

OVERVIEWThe Art Department will host an exhibit and competition of high school student artwork made previously in class or as class assignments. Students do not have to be enrolled in a high school art class to enter. The categories for this exhibit and competition include:

y ceramics y watercolor y drawing in any media y tempera

Acceptable subject matter may include anything that is appropriate for display to the general public in a school setting.

y All work must be ready for hanging, with picture wire only, on the morning of the Skills Day contests.

y All 2D work must have wire attached to the back. y No other hanging system should be used. y Any work not prepared for hanging will not be shown. y This means everything must be framed or matted and mounted on stiff board

such as foam board. Works do not have to be matted if they are securely mounted on stiff board. They may be covered with shrink-wrap or mylar or some other clear protective wrap.

y Each piece of art should have an identification tag with the following information: y Student artist’s name y High school y High school Instructor y Medium (oil, watercolor, tempera, mixed media, etc.) y If it is a copy, indicate this on the tag, along with what it is copied from. It is

DRAWING/STILL LIFE Draw from a still-life set-up. Judges will base their decisions on your basic rendering skills, including the way you use line, value, proportion, and shading. Your objective is to represent the still-life as faithfully as possible on paper in a provided medium. 9-10 a.m. or 10-11 a.m. [email protected] or call (928) 428-8469.

GRAPHIC DESIGN/LOGO You will be asked to design a logo. Judges will base their decisions on overall design, appropriateness of type style, and, if art is used, its effectiveness in the overall design. PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED PROJECT POSTER (At Activities Center check-in table) The student will create a poster promoting an event (i.e. music concert, sports event, or lecture). The poster will be a vertical Tabloid size (11x17) at 180ppi with 1/2 in. margins. The students will mount the poster on 15x20” foam core or thick matte board, which may be covered with clear protective wrap such as shrink-wrap or mylar. Students should look at event posters online for creative ideas and to see what kind of information should be included on an event poster (what, when, where, etc.).Each poster project should have an identification tag on the back that includes:

FOR ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSES STUDENTS SHOULD y Create two project folders, one for fonts and one for images y Download a font from dafont.com and use it for the header

AUTOMOTIVE CONTESTWHO: High School Automotive StudentsWHEN: 8:30, 9:00, 9:25, 9:50, 10:15, 10:40, 11:15 a.m.WHERE: EAC Industrial Technology Building (ITB) (In the north end of the building in the Automotive Shop, Room #148)

GENERAL GUIDELINES y Schools can have no more than two groups and students need to be currently

enrolled in an automotive technology program. y Instructors need to select the three students who will compete as a group. y Two groups will compete at a time with three students in each group. y Students will compete in hands-on activities and take a ten question written test. y Every student in the competition will take a written test. The student from their

school with the least questions missed will count as part of the group. y A maximum time of eight minutes will be allowed. A 60-second penalty will

be assessed for each task mistake. No questioning of student judges will be allowed and scores are final. Groups will only be notified of the task area issue and will not be told the exact problem.

y Vehicles will be on jack stands for safety.OVERVIEW

y Part One: Rotate two tires and torque lug nuts to 40-foot pounds. y Part Two : Inspect engine oil level. y Part Three: Using paper wire diagram printed from Mitchell’s ProDemand,

BUSINESS SKILLS 2017 - Project-based ContestsStudents may enter as an individuals or teams. Students must be on time.

Promotional Marketing ContestPromotional Marketing, utilizing Desktop Publishing, is a business strategy designed to stimulate a customer to take action towards a buying decision. This technique may include various incentives to buy such as contests, coupons, or free samples. Plan a promotional marketing campaign for your small business. Carefully plan the incentives and objectives of your program. Enter as an individual or a school team. Submit three items: a business card, letterhead, and coupon or flyer outlining your promotional marketing campaign. A maximum of three students or teams of 2-3 per school. Entrepreneurial Elevator Pitch ContestParticipants will be given three minutes to pitch a business idea to a panel of judges. The pitch will be followed by a four minute question and answer session. Participants will be judged based on idea viability, preparation, and presentation skills. Participants should plan and prepare their presentation—on any business idea they would like—prior to competition time. Participants may use visuals such as PowerPoint, White Board, etc. in their presentation. A maximum of twelve students can compete. (No more than two students per school). A Day in the Life of an Accountant ContestParticipants will be given a series of accounting problems in the form of a real-life scenario. Participants should have knowledge of the complete accounting cycle of a merchandising business. Participants should bring a pocket calculator. Desk calculators will not be available. What NOT To Do in a Job Interview Skit and PresentationTwo-four students will create a 3-5 minute job interview skit, 2-3 people can take the role of a manager and the other the applicant in a face-to-face meeting. In-person interviews focus on body language, eye contact, voice, and response quality. In this skit, the applicant adds distractions such as phone calls, texting, and social media. The managers should make note of the applicant’s distracting habits such as squirming in his seat, crossing and uncrossing legs, slouching, talking too softly, and dress. The skit will uncover and eliminate distracting habits that detract from an applicant's skills and experience. After the skit the team will make a 1-3 minute presentation on what corrections should be made to make it a successful interview. Judging Criteria: Preparation of skit, effectiveness and creativity in demonstrating interviewing techniques, and creativity and professionalism in presenting how the job interview could have been improved. Technology will NOT be available to use in the presentation. Only ONE team per school may enter. Location HTC 104/105 (conference room in Computer Commons). Contestants will create a complete floor plan of an assigned project. The plan will include all walls, dimensions, cabinets, doors, windows, callouts, room sizes and names, appliances, and roof. You will also be required to complete elevations of this floor plan. The drawing will be placed on an A-size title block format and printed.

Mechanical CADContestants will be required to complete an orthographic drawing of a 3-D solid model object. The drawing will be completed on an A-size title block format and printed. The object will have multiple views. Students must also be able to insert an isometric view of the object as well.

HIGH RISK DECISION MAKINGSKILLS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENTWHO: Open to all high school juniors and seniors, limited to five students per school. WHEN: Arive no later than 8:30. Activity 9-11:30 a.m.WHERE: Check in with Kris Matthews at the EAC Activities Center upon arrival. (Activity will take place across the highway at the Thatcher Police Dept.)

GENERAL GUIDELINES y Students must be on time. y This is an activity only. Awards are not given for this activity. y Objective: “To Shoot or Not to Shoot.” Students will gain an awareness of the

split-second decisions faced by law enforcement in various situations. y Students should cross the highway only at the crosswalk with the traffic

signals. y Students will be briefed prior to participation. y Actual shooting scenario will last 1-2 minutes. y NO SPECTATORS ALLOWED.

OVERVIEWThe Eastern Arizona College Administration of Justice Department, in conjunction with various law enforcement agencies within the Gila Valley, will provide an opportunity for students to experience a high risk, decision making scenario. These will replicate the high stress and split second decision making processes which law enforcement officers may encounter. During this exercise they will need to use verbal skills, command presence, and a rational thought process to guide them through whatever they experience.All students will be provided with protective equipment. This exercise does involve the possibility of being struck by a dummy round, similar to what might be experienced if you have been struck by a paintball from a paintball gun. As there is the possibility of minor injury, there will also be strict monitoring of students by officers who are specifically trained to perform such scenarios.Each student who wishes to participate must have a signed waiver from a parent / guardian, upon check in.

LANGUAGE SKILLS CONTESTSWHO: Open to all high-school studentsWHEN: See specific contest times belowWHERE: EAC Academic Programs Building, Rm. 118 (Middle Campus)

OVERVIEWThe French competition is divided into two levels: Beginning (1st/2nd year), and Intermediate (3rd year and up). The Spanish competition is divided into three levels: Beginning (1st/2nd year), Intermediate (3rd year), and Advanced (4th year and up including heritage speakers). The high-school senior who receives the highest score on the Intermediate French and Advanced Spanish written exam, respectively, will receive tuition scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year to EAC. Students have the opportunity to participate in all three categories of competition.

be memorized and recited with feeling and emotion, not just read by rote. Each recitation should be chosen based on language level. Students will be evaluated on language assuredness/fluency, pronunciation, feeling, and memorization.

LANGUAGE SKILLS CONTESTS (CONTINUED)Students, teachers, and chaperones not participating in the poetry and prose competition can go to Room 277 to listen to the student recitations, or return to return to AP 118 were we will have organized language games from 10-10:50 a.m.

Poetry/Prose Recitation Rules1. The student must do the following as part of the “Introduction:”

a) Provide three copies of the selection to the judges prior to beginning the recitation. Each copy of the poem or prose piece should have the number of words indicated on the front page.b) State his/her first and last name in the target language. c) State his/her level of language study in the target language. d) State the name of the selection and author in the target language.

2. The following minimums are to be followed:Beginning Spanish – 1st/2nd year student – 50-74 wordsIntermediate Spanish – 3rd year student – 75-99 wordsAdvanced Spanish – 4th year and up including native speakers – 100+ wordsBeginning French – 1st/2nd year student of French – 50-99 wordsIntermediate French – 3rd year and up – 100+ words

3. Word count includes articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and the title of the selection.4. Students may use excerpts from poems or prose rather than the entire work. (Several students could prepare sequential sections of these works)5. Within the poetry competition Spanish native speakers may only enter in the advanced category.

Skit Competition - Group: 11-11:50 a.m. Location: AP-118

This can be on any appropriate subject. The skit should be five to ten minutes long and will be judged on pronunciation, grammar, clarity of communication and smoothness of presentation. You may perform a prepared skit from a known play or a prepared skit written by you. It is not necessary to perform a skit in order to participate.

Skit Competition - Group Rules y Contestants should provide three copies of the skit to the judges prior to beginning the skit. y The following are to be done in the target language and after props are in place:

√ One member of the cast will introduce the drama by stating the title of the drama. √ Each member of the cast is to state his or her name and role.√ No prompting or use of scripts is allowed.√ All skits, regardless of level, are to be a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of ten minutes in length.√ Each participant should have at least five lines.

WELDING CONTESTSWHO: Open to all high school juniors and seniors only. See below for contest requirements.TIMES: See below in “General Guidlines”WHERE: EAC Industrial Technology Building, Welding - Room #115GENERAL GUIDELINES

y These are “Come and Go” contests. Just get in line. The contestants will be taken in order of arrival.

y Contestants can position the work pieces for optimum welding. Welds will be judged on appearance and adherence to written instructions.

RECOMMENDED ATTIRE y Long sleeve shirt or welding jacket. y Welding hood and protective eyewear.

OVERVIEWARC/STICK Welding (Limited to three students from each school)

Contestants will have 15 minutes to weld three pieces of flat hot rolled steel strip 1/4 x 2 x 3 inches each, using a butt weld and two inside corner fillet welds, or tee welds; according to the specification sheet that will be provided. The electrode used will be 7018 1/8 diameter. There will be scrap metal in each booth to practice on and set up the arc-welding machine. Work pieces can be positioned for optimum welding penetration. Contestants are encouraged to be thorough in cleaning the weld with the chipping hammer and wire brush available in each booth.

Oxy-Acetylene Welding (Limited to three students from each school)Contestants will have 15 minutes using a #0 victor oxy-acetylene welding tip and 1/16 inch diameter filler rod to join 14 gauge steel pieces with a butt and fillet weld. Contestants can position the work pieces for optimum welding.

Gas Metal ARC (MIG) Welding (Limited to one student per school) You will have 15 minutes using the new miller wire feed welder with 035 S-6 wire and 75-25 shielding gas to weld three pieces of flat hot rolled steel strip that are 1/4 x 2 x 3 inches each. You will use a butt weld and two inside corner fillet welds, or tee welds; according to the specification sheet you will be given. There will be scrap metal in each booth that you can use to practice on and set up the arc-welding machine. Work pieces can be positioned for optimum welding penetration. You are encouraged to be thorough in cleaning the weld with the chipping hammer and wire brush available in each booth.

Gas Tungsten (TIG) Welding (Limited to one student per school)You will have 15 minutes to weld three pieces of flat stainless steel 16 guage 304 strips 1 ¼ x 3 inches long. Filler rod will be used; Argon shielding gas; parent material to parent material. You will use a butt weld and one inside corner fillet weld, or tee weld, according to a specification sheet you will be given. There will be scrap metal in each booth that you can use to practice on and set up the TIG-welding machine. Work pieces can be positioned for optimum welding penetration. You are encouraged to be thorough in cleaning the weld with the wire brush available in each booth. Welds will be judged on appearance and adherence to written instructions. You will be allowed TWO Tungsten contaminations before removal from contest.

LARGE WOODWORKING CONTESTWHO: Open to all high school studentsWHEN: Projects will be accepted from 7-9 a.m. on contest dayWHERE: EAC Activities Center, North Campus

OVERVIEWThe contest will showcase large wood projects made at your high school. To be involved, you should craft and enter a large wood project made during the 2016-2017 academic school year. There is no limit to the number of projects entered per school. You and your instructor design and create a large wood project of your choice for this competition.

GENERAL GUIDELINES y The piece must be able to fit through a 35x82 door opening. y The project must have a wood material cost of over $100.

(If the cost is under $100 the project may be eligible for the Small Wood Project Contest)

y Students will be responsible to arrange projects for display and to remove them at the end of competition.

y Taller projects should be displayed on the south wall of the foyer of the Activities Center.

y The west entryway is the closest for bringing in your project. y Your name must be written on a Post-It note (provided) and placed on the

backside of the project, out of view of the judges. y Winners’ names and ribbons will be displayed on the projects following

judging. y Please take your ribbon with you at the end of the morning. y Display Times: Beginning at 7 a.m. until after lunch (1 p.m.)

OVERVIEWThe event will showcase small wood projects made at your high school. To be involved, you should craft and enter a small wood project made during the 2016-2017 academic school year. Only three projects per school can be entered to be judged. You, and your instructor, design and create a small wood project for the competition. Do not let the low project cost hinder your imagination; a very small wood project can be just as high quality as larger ones. Example ideas: wood chair, jewelry box, clock, wood toy, etc.

GENERAL GUIDELINES y The project must have a wood material cost under $100. y The project must be small enough that one person can carry it. y The project’s maximum weight must weigh 30 pounds or less. y The project must be small enough to fit on a seat to be transported in a school bus. y The project must have a legible fabrication plan (drawing) that has been

altered, or created and designed by the students with the help of an instructor. y Display Times: Beginning at 7 a.m. until after lunch (1 p.m.)
