Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. The very young, the pregnant, the elderly, and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to infection. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. The recalled turkey lunch meat was sold from the retail cooler at Earl’s Meats, in Holland, Michigan, and is marked with a sell by date of 2/14/15. Illnesses have not been reported to date in connection with this problem. The contamination was noted after testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of the product. Production of the product has been suspended while Earl’s Meats and MDARD continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.
