Second Generation --------------------------------------------------

2 James Whidden. Born in 1713 in Canterbury, New Hampshire. James died in Truro, Colchester Co., NS, on 13 Dec 1790; he was 77. Residence: Nova Scotia (1761). James is said to have served as a lieutenant at the capture of Louisburg from the French. After his first marriage, he moved to Nottingham, NH and in 1758, was with Jonathan Longfellow, a Selectman there. In 1760, he went to Truro, Nova Scotia and in 1761, he established his family (second wife and four sons) there and became a grantee of Truro Township. On 26 Mar 1734 when James was 21, he married Abigail Sanborn. They had the following children: i. Eleanor (1735-) ii. John (1736-1794) iii. Elizabeth iv. Martha (1743-) v. David (1749-1825) vi. Third Generation --------------------------------------------------

4 Samuel Whidden. Born ca 1680 in Greenland, New Hampshire. Samuel died in 1714; he was 34. Samuel was probably one of the younger children of Samuel Sr., as he seems to have still been young when he died in 1714 (outlived by his father, who died in the same year). His last child was born after his death. New Hampshire Court Record 9:303 shows that on Feb. 7, 1687-8, Samuel Whidden and Thomas Whitton, both of Greenland, were bound to the peace by Ludwick Fowler not to burn down his house (probably young brothers at the time). Samuel was living Aug. 22, 1713, when Francis Jones made his will, giving to "Samll. Widdon Jr. his wife Sarah’s . .". He died before Feb 20, 1713-4 when a warrant was issued for a town meeting - one item - to elect his successor as ‘constable for Greenland’. No estate was brought to probate. His father’s will, made March 3, 1713-4, refers to his three grandsons, "ye sons of my son Samuel

Whidden deceased." Samuel Whidden had four sons, James, Samuel, John and Ichabod. James went to Nov Scotia. Samuel cannot be identified in any accounts. John went to Maine. Ichabod remained in New Hampshire. ca 1700 when Samuel was 20, he married Sarah Jones in Greenland, NH. They had the following children: i. Sarah (ca1701-1751) ii. Samuel iii. John (ca1704-<1787) 2 iv. James (1713-1790) v. Ichabod (1714-1798) 5 Sarah Jones. Born on 27 Apr 1669 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. 6 John Sanborn. Born on 6 Nov 1681 in Hampton, New Hampshire. John died in Chester, NH, on 3 Sep 1727; he was 45. Occupation: Lovewell's War (1708), Large Landholder, Selectman (1724). Residence: North Hampton, Chester, NH. In his will, John Sanborn left his lands in North Hampton to sons Daniel and Benjamin, and his lands in Chester to sons Richard, Nathan, and Elisha. On 8 Aug 1701 when John was 19, he married Sarah Philbrick in Hampton, NH. They had the following children: i. Daniel (1702-) ii. Benjamin (1703-) iii. Phebe (1706-) iv. Richard (Twin) (1708-) v. Nathan (Twin) (1708-) vi. Elisha (1710-) vii. Ebenezer (1712-1794) viii. Sarah (1714-) 3 ix. Abigail (1716-ca1756) x. Ruth (1719-) xi. John (1721-) xii. Hannah (1723-) xiii. James (1724-) xiv. Mary (1726-) 7 Sarah Philbrick. Born on 11 Jun 1682 in Hampton, New Hampshire. Sarah died in Stratham on 30 May 1761; she was 78. Fourth Generation

--------------------------------------------------

8 Samuel Whidden. Born in 1624 in Portsmouth, England. Samuel died in Greenland, NH, aft 3 Mar 1714; he was 90. Occupation: Bricklayer, Mason. Residence: Portsmouth, NH, Greenland (1662). The first recorded evidence of Samuel’s appearance in New Hampshire can be found in 1662. New Hampshire Court Records, State papers, 40:176 June 24, 1662 "Samuel Whitten gave a bill to Wat'r (Walter?) Abbut to pay John Pottle's fine. Pottle, for kicking in the head of his company's drum, for being drunk, by his Antick carriage before the Court, etc. had been fined 20s. and fees or be whipped etc." As Whidden(/Whitten) and Pottle were old Devonshire names, this record may indicate a family connection. Court records in these same New Hampshire State papers, 40:507-8, show Samuel's next known appearance here: "The deposishon of Samuell Whedin ayged about 30. This deponant was Required by the Constable of Strabry banke to ayd and assist him in Executing a Levell which was deleved to hime by the select men of the same towne and this deponant doe her testyfy that Walter Abbot sayd he would nocke the Constablls Brains outt if hee tocht any oxcen of his and stod with his axe Redy to strike the sayd Constabell and sayd hee would Loes his heartt blood befor hee should have any oxcen ther ans swoer by God deponant will testyfy the same. Juenuery ye 21 : 1663. Sworne in Court 2d ffebruery 1663, Rec: Stileman Clerke". James Drew, aged about 30, deposed to the same on the same date. From 1663 through to 1713, numerous deeds, land transfers, tax lists, Meeting House minutes, etc., can be found bearing the name of Samuel Whidden. Samuel was a bricklayer and mason. The Collections of the New Hampshire Historical Society continuing province records and court papers 1680 - 1692, Vol VIII, shows the statement of indenture of Nathan Knight: "This indenture witnesseth that I, Nathan Knight, sometime of Blackpoint, with the consent of my father-in-law, Harry Brooken, and Elend, his wife, have put myself apprentice to Samuel Whidden, of Portsmouth, in the county of Portsmouth, and bound mason after the manner of an apprentice with him, to serve and abide the full space and term of twelve years and five months, thence next following, to be full, complete and ended; during which time said apprentice his said master faithfully shall serve, his lawful secrets shall keep, and commands shall gladly do, damage unto his said master he shall not do, nor see to be done of others, but to the best of his power shall give timely notice thereof to his said masters. Fornication he shall not commit, nor contract matrimony within the said time. The goods of his said master he shall not lend nor spend. He shall not play at cards, or dice, or any other unlawful game, whereby his said master may have damage in his own goods, or others; taverns he shall not haunt, nor from his master's business absent himself by day or by night, but in all things shall behave himself as a faithful apprentice ought to do. And said master his said apprentice shall teach and instruct, or cause to be taught and instructed in the art and mystery as mason; finding unto his said apprentice during said time meat, drink, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting an apprentice, teaching him to read, and allowing him three months toward the latter end of his time to go to school to write, as also double apparel at end of said time. As witness our hands and seals, interchangeably put to two

Signed 3 March 1713-4. Samll Whiden. Witnesses - Walter Philbrook, John Neall, Joseph Smith. Fifth Generation --------------------------------------------------

16 Ichabod Whidden. Born in Portsmouth, England. The Whidden name has been spelled in various ways throughout the centuries: Wyddon, Whiddon, Whydon. From very early times (at least the 14th century), the Whidden's lived at Chagford in Devonshire, which is in the heart of the moors. In the time of Queen Mary, 1553-58, the Chagford Manor became the property of Sir John Whiddon, and remained in the family for several descents. They also occuppied the property at Whiddon Park, about a mile from Chagford Manor. The family has been extinct in Chagford since the 1700's, but the name has been preserved. Today, Whiddon Park and the manor house is as beautiful as ever, the entrance gates bearing the name "Whiddon". The house dates probably from the late 15th century. The parish church also holds memorials to several Whiddons. Icahbod Whidden is said to have come to Portsmouth, NH (sailing from Portsmouth, England) in 1662, bringing with him his three sons, Samuel, James, and John. No genealogists thus far have been able to connect him back to his origins in Portsmouth. Despite the records of the three sons in New Hampshire, there is very little positive record of Ichabod, suggesting he was either quite elderly when he arrived, or he returned to England, or perhaps the “three brothers” did arrive on their own. This may never be resolved. Miss Helen Whidden in Whidden Family of Nova Scotia stated, “Of James and John we have no positive record.” However, recent work by Paul David Whidden and Raymond Marvin Whidden has now developed an extensive genealogy from John. Children: 8 i. Samuel (1624->1714) ii. John (ca1650-<1681) iii. James (>1663-1750) 18 James Cate. Born in 1634. James died in Portsmouth, NH, on 15 May 1677; he was 43. Occupation: Carpenter. Residence: Portsmouth, NH (1657).

Residence: Exeter, NH (1640), Portsmouth, NH. Described in the Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire as a man of more than ordinary education. About June 1648 his wife was robbed and murdered between Dover and Exeter and her body thrown into the river. In Hampton court the next September, he and Robert Hethersay had cross suits for defamation, he charging that Hethersay had raised an evil report of his deceased wife; he also sued for breach of contract in carrying her to O.R. in a canoe and not bringing her back, as agreed. This story was fictionalized in the book “The Strange Death of Mistress Coffin”, by Robert J. Begiebing, which captures the times and mood of colonial New Hampshire. His second wife was put under a guardian in 1664 for being crazy and distempered. Balthasar married Annah. They had the following children:
