Introduction:

PLANTS AND ANIMALS HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

(AND US) IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. David the gnome helps you to discover :

ALL ABOUT PLANTS AND ANIMALS (FLORA AND

FAUNA),

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS IN LIFE

SAVEING EARTH, PLANTS AND ANIMALS

With:

activities, tests and experiments

Hello, my name is David, I am a gnome,

of 15 centimetres (6 inches) of height,

and between 250 and 300 grams (8 and

10 ounces) of weight.

I’m 399 years old. I live in a wood .

I know the secrets of Nature.

You will discover with me plants and ani-

mals, their importance in our life.

WHERE DOES DAVID LIVE? DRAW AND COLOUR

The trees in wood are very big.

Trees are all very unique. Just like snowflakes, no

two trees are the same! All trees, though, are a

type of plant that have tall wooden trunks, roots,

branches, and leaves or needles. Trees don't just

die after one year or season, but they stay alive

for many years. Some of them get to be a thousand

years old!

Some trees change during the sea-

sons spring, summer, fall and winter.

Page 6: Earth child

6

Some trees loose their leaves- those

trees are called "deciduous". There are

trees that do not loose their leaves and

stay green all year long, those trees

are called "evergreen". Evergreen trees

are used as Christmas trees. But don’t

cut them...

Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the autumn, the leaves are generally larger and wider than those of conifers (ever-green). the conifers known as pines, spruce and fir, leaves ap-pear as needles and remain on the twig during even the coldest winters.

Search cut and paste the leaves of various trees (both deciduous and evergreen)

There are lots of kinds of bark. Look for the differ-ences. What colour is the bark? Is it rough or smooth? Is it thick or thin? Does it have a smell? What other differ-ences can you find?

Leaves have lots of different sizes and shapes. A tiny pine needle is really a leaf. How many pine needles would fit on a maple leaf? Find a leaf and look at it closely. Is it smooth or hairy? Is it shiny or full? Does it have one point or lots of points? Are the points sharp or round? Is it simple or com-pound? Can you find the veins in your leaf? What other interesting things do you see?

A TREE IS A MAN’S BEST FRIENDS!

Trees give us air, food, heat, wood, pa-

per, they are a home for the animals

and we like climbing trees.

Trees are very important to our environment. They

purifies air and also provides fruits, woods for human

beings. Trees are the place for birds and animal to

live.

What do the trees give us? Search, cut and past news-

paper and magazine images.

Page 8: Earth child

8

We need to take care of our trees. You use paper

every single day right? Well paper comes from

tree trunks. And today, people in different

countries all over the world use so much paper

that there are fewer and fewer trees, and

smaller and smaller forests. We can work

together to reduce how much paper we use and

save one tree at a time!

Make your own paper from old newspaper.

You will need:

-a blender

-a whole section of newspa-

per

-2 and a 1/2 single newspaper pages

-5 cups (1.2 litres) of water

-a pan 3 inches (7.6cm) deep

-a piece of screen to fit inside the

pan

-a measuring cup

-a flat piece of wood the size of a

newspaper's front page

-waxed paper.

Follow These Steps:

1. Tear the two-and-a-half pages of

newspaper into tiny strips.

2. Place the strips in a blender with 5

cups of water. ASK PERMISSION

TO USE THE BLENDER. HAVE AN

ADULT SUPERVISE THIS STEP.

Cover the blender and blend the

newspaper and water.

3. Pour about 1 inch (2.5cm) of water

into the pan. Pour the blended paper

pulp into the measuring cup.

4. Put the screen into the pan. Pour one cup (240 ml) of pulp over the screen.

5. Spread the pulp evenly in the water with your fingers.

6. Lift the screen and let the water drain off.

7. Open the newspaper section to the middle. Put the newspaper on a waterproof surface. Place waxed paper

in the center of the newspaper. Place the screen with the pulp on the waxed paper. Close the newspaper.

8. Carefully flip over the newspaper section so the screen is on top of the pulp. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPOR-

TANT.

9. Place the board on top of the newspaper and press out extra water. Open the newspaper and take out the

screen. Leave the newspaper open and let the pulp dry for at least 24 hours. When your paper pulp is dry,

peel it off the waxed paper and paint on it !

Paste your recycled paper or a photo of the activ-

ity.

Like all plants, a tree begins

from a seed. Inside each tree

seed is a tree waiting to be

born!

A seed must have food, water and light to grow. Once the seed sprouts, it grows into a seedling that grows into a sapling and even-

tually saplings grow into trees that produce their own seeds. LIFE CYCLE OF BEAN PLANT: PLANT A BEAN,

I love plants and garden-

ing...In my garden I planted

seeds of herbs and medici-

nal plants. They can used

for flavouring foods and

medicinal purposes.

Grow and explore some herbs, use all of your senses . You can make

your own herbarium.

CUTE, PRESS AND PASTE A LITTLE HERB. WRITE THE NAME.

Page 11: Earth child

11

In the spring I plant flower bulbs.

Bulbs are simply underground

masses of food storage from which

plants grow.

Some plants grow from other means, such as bulbs. .

Bulbs, like seeds, are also available in different sizes,

shapes, and types. True bulbs, such as tulips, onions, and

daffodils, contain a complete miniature plant inside. They have fleshy scales of

food that nourish the plant.

The forest where I live is the

home of many types of

ANIMALS

Page 13: Earth child

13

Some animals (herbivores) eat

plants and some animals eat other

animals..

A food chain shows how each living thing gets its food. Some ani-mals eat plants and some animals eat other animals. For example, a simple food chain links the trees & shrubs, the giraffes (that eat trees & shrubs), and the lions (that eat the giraffes). Each link in this chain is food for the next link. A food chain always starts with plant life and ends with an animal.

Animals live everywhere on

Earth. An animal's living place is

called its habitat.

Most animals are only adapted to live in one or two habitats where they can find food, water, shelter and a mate.

DRAW ANIMALS INTO EACH CIRCLE.

15

The animals are my great

friends...wild and domesti-

cated animals. The farm animals

sustain our daily lives.

Most of the food and materials you buy in stores, originally comes from

farms. Visit a farm and discover the animals that reside on the farm,

their life and all things they give us. You can find interesting informa-

Draw a line to match animals to the

products they produce

Page 16: Earth child

16

Most of the domestic ani-

mals, our pets, are greatly

devoted to us. We can also

respond to their LOVE AND

CARE.

The most popular pets are: dogs, cats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits,

ferrets, horses, pet birds [canaries, finches, cockatiels, parakeets, and love-

birds], mice, rats and fish. Have you a pet? Visit a pet shop.

THE FOREST WHERE I LIVE

THE PLANTS AND THE ANIMALS ARE

PRESERVED: IT IS A NATIONAL PARK

WHERE NATURE AND WILDLIFE ARE

PROTECTED, WHERE YOU AND THE

CHILDREN OF THE FUTURE CAN

DESCOVER THE BENEFIT AND

ENJOYMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES.

Search, cut and past newspaper and magazine images OF

ANIMALS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION.

HUMANS HAVE ALREADY CAUSED THE EXTINCTION OF MANY SPECIES, AND

LARGE NUMBERS OF MANY OTHER SPECIES ARE CURRENTLY ENDANGERED AND

MAY SOON BECOME EXTINCT.

Page 18: Earth child

18

Now you know all living crea-

tures (plants, animals, men)

have basic needs: air, water,

food and a place to be.

Protecting land, water and air

is the key to preserving plant

animals and us for our

planet's future.

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

REDUCE RIUSE RICYCLE AND .....COLOUR

Recycle! Recycling is an important part of keeping Earth

clean. It is very easy to do. By giving old things a new life we put less pressure on

important resources all of us will need in the future to survive.
