OBJECTIVES

• Define and differentiate land and sea breezes, monsoons, and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

• Explain the occurrence of wind, land and sea breezes, monsoons, and ITCZ

• Describe the effects of certain weather systems in the Philippines

• Plan for extreme weather conditions like torrential rains

What do you need to do?

1. Formulate a hypothesis

2. Think of a experimental design

3. Identify the variables – manipulated, responding, controlled

4. Identify the set-ups

5. Select the materials that you need

6. Plan how you will present your data

Key questions

Which heats faster, land or water?

How does this relate to the movement of air on land and water?

Answer these questions

1. You go to the beach during the summer. You notice that as you near the beach, if feels warmer. You remove your slippers to try to take a dip at the sea but you once you step on the sand, it is very hot. However, when you swim at the sea, it is less warmer than the sand. How do you explain this difference in temperature?

2. Your friend went to the Hong Kong for vacation during the summer. They told you that unlike the Philippines, the days there are much cooler. You notice that Hong Kong is at a higher latitude that the Philippines. How do you think this affects the temperature on those places?

Things to Ponder

1. Can we utilize sea breeze and land breeze for energy?

2. If yes, how?

3. Are all places viable to have these energy sources?

4. Which places could be candidates for these energy sources?

5. Could you name places in the Philippines that were able to harness wind energy successfully?
