Department of Geology and Paleontology

TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The scientific activities of the Department of Geology and Paleontology were carried out in several working teams. In the sedimentology and paleontology of the Tertiary the studies were concentrated on the reedition of the Karpatian Stratotype and relicts of Miocene sediments on the eastern margin of the Bohemian, sequence stratigraphy of the Carpathian Foredeep as well as on the Miocene paleontology and palynology (R. Brzobohatý, N. Doláková, Š. Hladilová, S. Nehyba). In the Paleozic the studies were concentrated on the paleobiogeography and tectonostratigraphic development and correlation of the Variscan Terranes in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Minor and Central, Cambrian sediments in SE Moravia and Permian sediments in the Boskovice Furrow and Devonian - Carboniferous biostratigraphy and tectonics (J. Kalvoda, J. Leichmann, S. Nehyba, R. Melichar) as well as geochemical and tectonic modelling of the fluid migration in the Palaeozoic of the Moravo-Silesian region ( M.Slobodník). The study of crystalline rocks were concentrated on the pebbles in Culm conglomerates, inner structure of feldspars and crystalline rocks of the Upper Moravia Ravine and volcanism of the Vrbno Group (J. Leichmann, A. Přichystal). Most of the topics of the scientific researches were solved within the grant project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact – contact of Variscides and Alpides (J. Kalvoda, J. Leichmann, Š. Hladilová, S. Nehyba, A. Přichystal). The Quartenary researches were aimed at raw materials of artefacts, evolutionary trends in Quarternary mammals and Quartenary of the Mokrá Plateau (A. Přichystal, R. Musil). Hydrogeological studies included cooperation with the Brno City Municipality in compilation of the extensive project of subsurface contamination in the Brno City for the purposes of the Territorial City Plan and compilation of the Information system of the mineral water (localities Teplice, Ondrášov). The mentioned studies were supported by numerous grant projects, presented in several domestic and international conferences and published in many scientific papers (see below).

Beside the active participation the members of the department organized several conferences - 8. Quaternary 2002, Brno 22.11.2002, 5th Workshop of the IGCP/UNESCO Project No. 442 “Raw materials of the Neolithic/Aeneolithic polished stone artefacts: their migration paths in Europe”, Bratislava – Šlapanice u Brna, 1st – 5th September 2002, 5th workshop “Natural Science Methods in Archaeology and Anthropology”, Brno, 22nd

– 24th May 2002, Short course of trace fossils study ( in cooperation with UP Olomouc and Jagellonian University, Cracow) - Olomouc 10-12.4.2002 and Moravian-Silesian Paleozoics 2002. Organizer A. Prichystal, cooperation with Czech geological Service. February 12th. The department has been also involved in the popularization of science. A Prichystal participated in a series of lectures “Geological hazards” in the Moravian Museum, Brno

In the scientific research field, the forefront interest of the department lay in the grant project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact – contact of Variscides and Alpides. Some of the broad themes of the project were solved together with the members of the Department of Geochemistry, Petrology and Mineralogy (M. Novák, Z. Losos, J. Zeman) and similar approach was adopted also in some other grant projects. The fact that several working teams have worked across the boundaries of the departments was one of the reasons that after long discussions both Department of Geology and Paleontology and Department of Geochemistry, Petrology and Mineralogy merged in the Institute of Geological Sciences created from January 1st 2003.

In the educational sphere the major changes were connected with the transition to the European credit system and three level teaching – bachelor – magister –PhD. An important event was “Student geological conference” organized by PhD students of both the Department of Geology and Paleontology and Department of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology in February. More than 40 students presented their contributions and participated in a field trip. STRUCTURE OF PERSONNEL

Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry

TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The activities of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry in 2002 were focused both on the educational tasks and on solution of objectives issuing from participation in grant projects and international cooperation. In the scientific research field, the forefront interest of the department lay in: the Project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact – contact of Variscides and Alpides (Z. Losos, M Novák, M. Suk, J. Zeman,); Project CEZ J07/98: Structural-functional relationships of biomolecules and their role in metabolism (J. Zeman); the International Geological Correlation Program No. 405 (”Anthropogenic Impact of Weathering Processes” - leaders P. Sulovský, J. Zeman) and in the cooperation with universities and other scientific institutions in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and USA. The latter expressed itself above all by publications and organization of joint field excursions. The members of the department have also participated in several grant projects bestowed by the Grant Agency of Czech Republic, Grant Agency of the Ministry of Environment, Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic and Grant Agency of the Ministry of Culture. The research at the Department was focused on several fields. The strong interest was concentrated on geochemical, mineralogical and petrological research of weathering processes - both by laboratory experiments and field-testing. The former involved test modeling of dissolution of silicates (J. Faimon) and carbonates (J. Zeman) and precipitation of dissolved species, the latter included monitoring of processes leading to destruction of architectural artefacts, mortars (M. Gregerová) and natural monuments - caves (M. Gregerová, J. Zeman, J. Štelcl, J. Faimon) including speleotherapy (J. Štelcl, J. Faimon). Especially on environmental problems are focused research topics as long term water-rock-atmosphere interaction, surface geochemical processes modeling, sorption and desorption of heavy metals on rock and minerals, environmental impact of geological processes and human activity, partly solved within Project of Ministry of Environment VaV/630/3/00: Ecological and geological (Ecogeological) research of pollutant migration in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey in Brno (J. Zeman). The research in mineralogy and petrology was focused particularly on rocks and minerals occurring on the territory of the Bohemian Massif and the Western Carpathians: ore occurrences in the Jeseníky Mts. - B. Fojt, V. Vávra, Z. Losos; mineral assemblages in rocks of the Žulová massif - Z. Losos - and of the Třebíč durbachite massif – P. Sulovský, V. Vávra; minerals of granitic pegmatites from the Moldanubicum - M. Novák, J. Staněk; leucocratic granitic rocks with tourmaline and dumortierite - M. Novák; mafic and ultramafic rocks from the eastern part of the Bohemian massif - M. Suk; clastic sediments of the Drahany Uplands and the crystalline rocks therein – J. Kotková, M. Novák, P. Sulovský; uranium mineralization (P. Sulovský) and environmental consequences of its mining - J. Zeman. Much of our work was supported by the instrumentation available at the department e.g., X-ray diffractometer, electron microprobe (EDS, WDS), optical microscopy laboratory, chemical laboratory with the new AAS instrument Pye Unicam and their background - sample preparation laboratory. The department has also been responsible for the popularization of science, especially in cooperation with the Moravian Museum, Brno and by contributions to the journals for mineral collectors - Mineral, issued in Brno, Bulletin of Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, National Museum, Prague and organizing field trips in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey. The long-lasting collaboration with geological organizations and other institutions, based in particular on laboratory instrumentation of the department and external education, has found an important place among the activities of the department. Department of Geography

PEDAGOGICAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The Department of Geography belongs with its 20 members and with number of students to the biggest departments of the faculty. Students on the graduate degree can chose one of four specialisations: physical geography, climatology and hydrology, cartography with geoinformatics and remote sensing, and regional geography with regional development. The study of the future secondary teachers program combines Geography with Mathematics, Biology, Geology, History and English. Besides the mentioned there is possible to study 3 years bachleor study Applied geography and Mathematics The PhD students are orientad on physical geography, cartography and geoinformatics, and regional geography with regional development.

In correspondebnce with inovation and changes in study strcture at the Faculty of Science basic changes have been prepared at the geography deparment in this year. Such innovation allows broader both vertical and horizontal linkage to other study programes at the Faculty.

In the field of grant research 10 grant projects have been elaborated at the department. The research program is chiefly focused on the following problems: the reconstruction of the climate and scenarios of climatic changes; the application of statistical methods in the analysis of time series; microclimate and topoclimate; climate of polar regions; the problems of atmospheric pollution; precipitation-runoff relation in selected watersheds; characterization of ecosystems according to their animal component, problems of the contemporary social and economic transformation of the Czech Republic; regional geographic studies of small territories; the preparation of data and the GIS management of chosen regions and their application to specific problems; the theory and methods of teaching geography.

Information about grants and other scientific projects, soluted on the department, about international co-operation and co-operation with other Czech and foreign institutions are showed in next parts of this yearbook.

Within the Department of Geography the Laboratory of Geoinformatics and Cartography is active in the field of GIS and remote sensing being the best equipped laboratory in the Moravian region. The Laboratory has many international co-operation contacts. Its members deal not only with scientific research within a grant program, but with several important business contracts (using student’s activities).

We can state that due to the activities of the members and their results and achievements the department belongs to the top geographical institutions in the Czech Republic and is comparable with similar institutions abroad.

Institute of Physics of the Earth

RESEARCH AND PEDAGOGICAL ACTIVITIES The IPE is integrated into the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO). The CTBTO detects and identifies underground nuclear explosions in order to verify the adherence to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) that was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations Organisation in New York in 1996. Institute of Physics of the Earth acts as the National Data Centre (NDC) for the CTBTO and represents the Czech Republic at meetings of the Working Group in verification issues. National Authority (government contact point) for the CTBTO and the Czech Republic is the State Office for Nuclear Safety in Prague. The IPE operates for the CTBTO the auxiliary seismological station VRAC at Vranov by Brno. Seismic signal registered by the VRAC station is transmitted to the International Data Centre (IDC) in Vienna where data from all the co-operating stations are used for distinguishing between natural events (earthquakes) and nuclear explosions. Since the year 2000 both the VRAC station and the NDC is connected with the IDC in Vienna through a satellite link. During the year 2002 the upgrade of the seismological instrumentation of the station has been carried out in accordance with the requirements of the CTBTO Operational Manual. In 2002 the VRAC station became one of the first six IMS auxiliary seismic stations which were formally certificated. The IPE focuses on regional seismological monitoring of Moravia. Besides the VRAC station the IPE operates three more broadband seismological stations. The MORC station near Moravský Beroun was set up in the framework of the international project GEOFON in 1994. Stations JAVC (Velká Javorina) and KRUC (Moravský Krumlov) have been in operation since 1995 due to joint efforts of the IPE and the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) in Vienna. This seismological monitoring is used in particular for the evaluation of local and regional seismicity. It is also employed as a source of complementary data for the monitoring of global seismicity. The data are regularly provided to the National Seismological Network and to several external co-operating organisations. Since the last year the ANTELOPE system has been used for real-time data acquisition. The project ACORN III "Detection of seismoactive fault zones in the East Alpine - West Carpathian - Bohemian Massif region using geophysical data and digital earthquake monitoring of the ACORN network.", has started in January 2002. This research is focused on the seismic activity of Central Europe, namely of the Alpine-Carpathian region. In the framework of this project, which is a joint effort of the IPE Brno and the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics Vienna, our institute has been improving the technique of an accurate localisation of seismic events in the area of the Vienna Basin and the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif. Newly, the gravity and magnetic data from the relevant territories of the Czech Republic and Austria are being compiled. An international research project "Seismological Monitoring of the Dlouhé Stráně Pumped Storage Power Plant" conceived in co-operation with the Italian partner – Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica Rome – was finished in 2002. During the period April 2001 - December 2002 a temporary local seismological network was monitoring natural and induced seismicity in the vicinity of the power plant. A total number of 66 local tectonic events with local magnitudes up to 1.4 was localized and used for the analysis of the stress field and fault kinematics. As the network provides a unique source of high-quality data on natural seismicity of northeast Czech Republic, we plan to continue the monitoring in the next years. The study of seismic activity in the region of the Western Bohemia - Vogtland continues with the data acquisition, processing and interpretation within the project "Complex Geophysical Research in the Seismogenic Western Part of the Bohemian Massif" (supported by Grant Agency of Czech Republic, grant no. 205/02/0381). The research is carried out in a close co-operation with other institutions from Prague and Germany; preliminary results were presented at the workshop in Bucha, Germany. The monitoring of local seismic activity continues in the area surrounding the nuclear power plant Temelín by the network of five stations. The results are summarized in the reports quarterly and evaluated in broader geological-geophysical context once a year. The results from the period 1991-2002 presented at the Mission of International Agency for Atomic Energy (Feb 3-7 2003) were positively evaluated and it was recommended to continue the monitoring activities. According to the Melk Agreements the basic current results of the monitoring are published operatively at the seismological info-display (www.ipe.muni.cz/seismologie_temelin).

Among other international scientific organisations the IPE is a member of the IRIS (Incorporated Research in Seismology - the consortium of US universities) and its affiliated organisation the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) in Bruyéres-le-Chatel (France). In the year 2002 the EMSC project "Earthquake Parameters and Standardised Information" (EPSI) to which the IPE provided seismological data from its four broadband stations, was finished. New EU granted project "Mediterranean-European Rapid Earthquake Data Information and Archiving Network" (MEREDIAN-2), within which the above mentioned research is continued, was commenced in April 2002. It is co-ordinated by Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology (ORFEUS), residing at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). The purpose of the MEREDIAN project is to improve the existing European infrastructure for seismological data exchange before individual national data centres diverge into incompatible standards, protocols, exchange procedures and software. The MEREDIAN project addresses the improvements of relevant scientific and technical requirements. The aim is one homogeneous European-Mediterranean seismological data infrastructure allowing rapid, easy access to earthquake data and information for basic research and reliable and fast distribution of, and access to the earthquake information for decision-makers and the public. The large European geophysical project CELEBRATION 2000 in which the IPE co-operated, was finished in 2002. The project comprised the measurements of a number of regional refraction seismic profiles in the regions of the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. It contributes to the construction of the velocity models of the CE Earth crust. In the Czech Republic the modelling was carried out along the profiles Krnov – Znojmo and Slavonice – Aš. The IPE provided a complex geophysical analysis of the areas where the profile CEL10 intersects the reflection profile 8HR/85 refraction profile KII. In the year 2002 the Institute of Physics of the Earth (IPE) continued its pedagogical activities aimed at students of Earth Sciences with the courses on Geophysics, Tectonics, Structural Geology and Petrology.
