IntroductionWhen it comes to making good decisions regarding packaging and the environment, both you and your customers rely on the validity of sustainable packaging claims.
The EarthChoice team is committed to helping you both create and evaluate sustainable packaging messages that are legitimate and compelling.
Overview
Eco-friendly. Green. Sustainable. Good for the planet. Compostable. Biodegradable. What do these terms mean? Are they legitimate? Are they legal? How do you know?
How can you gauge if a claim is legitimate? Here are four simple guidelines:
1. Specific and detailed The description must state exactly what is being claimed, by how much, and compared to what.
2. Clear, prominent & easily understood According to the FTC, “Clarity of language, relative type size and proximity to the claim being qualified, and an absence of contrary claims that could undercut effectiveness, will maximize the likelihood that the qualifications and disclosures are appropriately clear and prominent.”
3. No overstatements Claims that are not statistically significant should not be made. Further, unless recycling or composting is widely available (generally accepted to mean by at least 60% of households), it cannot be claimed without qualifying the limited extent to which recycling is available.
4. A clear basis of comparison To claim that the manufacture of your product generates 25% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a competitive product, you must be able to state the emissions levels for both products.

EarthChoice PSM Cutlery is manufactured from a blend of difference materials, the majority of which is starch. 50% of the base material comes from corn which does not come from corn originally intended for human consumption and is not genetically modified. This material can handle temperatures up to 200F which makes it perfect for higher heat applications.
Our EarthChoice Recycled Polypropylene cutlery is made from a minimum of 20% previously used post-consumer plastic products. Products made from post-consumer materials mean less plastic in landfills. This unbreakable lineup performs with the same strength as traditional polypropylene cutlery and can be used for both hot and cold foods.

Recycled PET (RPET) is produced from previously used post-consumer plastic products. EarthChoice uses 25% recycled content in RPET packaging. This product is recyclable in the few communities that have appropriate recycling programs.
Mineral-Filled Polypropylene (MFPP) contains an average of 50% less plastic polymers than standard polypropylene containers which reduces plastic usage.
Fiber Blend Our Fiber Blend products are made from a blend of pulp fibers which are sustainable and renewable resources. Many SKUs are ASTM D 6868 certified and compostable in commercial facilities only, which may not exist in all areas. Not suited for home composting.
PLA (Ingeo) PLA is a natural plastic material made from corn, and is 100% annually renewable. It is best used for cold applications and has a heat tolerance of 105° F. All EarthChoice PLA products are ASTM D 6400 certified and compostable in commercial facilities only, which may not exist in all areas. Not suited for home composting.
