Dear Sir / Madam Date: 6th April 2011

I am pleased to be writing to you to introduce earthian, a landmark sustainability programor educational institutions across

the country. The vision o this program is rooted in the challenging task that humanity aces o fnding solutions to several

sustainability issues such as climate change, water scarcity, rapid urbanization and biodiversity loss, to name just a ew. The act that

solutions will have to be ound to these challenges even as we ensure balanced and inclusive economic growth will require an

exceptional caliber o leadership rom our uture generations. Those in schools and colleges today will be our uture policy makers,

technocrats, administrators and educationists who will lead this change.

The program consists o two stages in the frst stage, we invite colleges to submit papers on any o nine sustainability

themes. Colleges can participate through teams ormed by students rom any discipline in graduate and post graduate programs.

Papers will be assessed or originality o thinking and how actionable the ideas are, with particular relevance to the Indian context.

The assessment process will culminate with the announcement o fve national winners, ollowed by a conerence where the

winners will get an opportunity to present their papers beore an audience that will comprise some o the best minds in the felds

o education and sustainability rom across the country.

The second stage will in many ways comprise the essence o the whole program, where we will initiate a phase ocontinuing

engagement with the winning institutions. The primary goal o this phase will be in helping them build institutional capacity on

an ongoing basis. As a prime example o this, they will be able to connect and engage with some o our key partners on dierent

areas o sustainability, e.g. biodiversity, waste recycling. Another important element o this phase will be the institutions own

journey towards becoming a green campus.

As an emerging economy in the global arena, India has an unprecedented opportunity o being a role model to the world by

demonstrating how it is possible to balance the compulsions o economic well being or all with those o ecological sustainability.

For this to happen, making sustainability axiomatic to education at both the school and college levels will be critical. Sustainability

and Education are two areas that Wipro is already deeply engaged with and we are very excited to be a part o this nation-wide

program. We eagerly look orward to your whole hearted participation in earthian.
