WE ARE SO EXCITED TO HAVE YOU STAY WITH US! Dear Dancer and Parents,We are very excited to have your dancer join us this summer for the Joffrey Ballet School Summer 2019 Intensives! My name is Danielle Hecker and I am the Director of Residence Life. This is my seventh year in Residence Life with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City. I am truly grateful for the chance to meet new dancers and catch up with familiar faces each summer. Working with dancers and students has been a passion of mine from a young age. After

receiving my BFA in Ballet and Modern Dance from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX in 2014, I continued working with students through Joffrey Residence Life, teaching dance at a private elementary school, teaching at a local studio, working at Walt Disney World, and choreographing many high school choir and musical productions.

I have also been a Dance Captain, performer, and choreographer in various musical theater productions in the Texas area as well. Attending a summer intensive is an integral part to a young dancers’ development as an artist and human. Many life and professional skills are acquired and learned at summer intensives that dancers will use the rest of their lives. Whether they become a professional dancer, architect, engineer, teacher, marine biologist, etc; being exposed to the level of training Joffrey offers and having the discipline dance training instills is an advantage in the world.

Having attended many summer intensives myself, I understand the importance a summer intensive has on a developing dancer. My housing staff and I strive to help every student feel welcomed, safe, and have an unforgettable experience. Our number one priority is the safety of each dancer. No matter if your dancer is staying one week or twelve weeks, we know students will create memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your dancer with us. We look forward to a wonderful and exciting summer here in the Big Apple!

INTENSIVE(S): NYC Ballet, NYC Jazz & Contemporary, NYC Pre-Professional, NYC Summer of Hip-Hop and NYC Musical Theater.

Joffrey Ballet School and its dormitories are located in prime centers of New York City in order to offer a truly enriching experience for our students. While students gain a unique perspective of the city, please be advised that in iconic New York fashion, the rooms may be smaller than what you are expecting. Please consider this while packing. Remember, you can always purchase items upon arrival.

When planning finances for the summer, please be advised that NYC has a high cost of living. Groceries,

transportation, and entertainment are all costs to be considered as part of your budget for the JBS program.

Living at East 3rd StreetLaundry: Multiple washers and dryers are available for student and staff use on the top floor pent house level (PH). Students should be attentive while doing laundry and be prompt in moving clothes between machines or they are at risk of other students moving their laundry.

Laundry cards can be purchased next to the security desk (CASH ONLY). Cards are $20 to purchase, then students must fil l card with cash in the desired amount. Laundry is $3.25 per load. Any problems with the laundry card or machines must be reported to the front desk, as they are unaffiliated with Joffrey Ballet School. We recommend sharing a laundry card with the dancers in your apartment.

If students would like to enroll in a laundry pick up/drop off service, or use a laundromat, there are multiple laundry providers that service the area. Exquisite Cleaners Inc located at 49th 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10003. Singapore Laundry and Dry Clean located at 60 East 3rd Street, New York, NY 10003. Please keep in mind, items like leotards, tights, ballet skirts, dance wear, etc. can be hand washed in sink.

Meal Plan: The Meal Plan in NY is OPTIONAL. All students have the option to purchase a meal plan catered by Panera Bread. Panera Bread provides students with breakfast and dinner daily, which will be setup in the basement rec room. Please note, if your dancer has severe or life threatening food allergies or is a picky eater, we strongly suggest not purchasing the Meal Plan and have your dancer purchase groceries elsewhere. RAs take students to the grocery store when they check in on Sunday. Buying groceries may also be a more economic option. To see a sample menu, please visit our website.

Please note that lunch is NOT included in the meal plan. We recommend that students pack a healthy lunch and snacks to eat between meals. Due to severe food allergies, dancers are NOT permitted to pack anything with peanuts in their lunch.

Please be informed that due to FDA laws about proper food temperature and storage, Pane-ra serves food that is intended to be eaten at room temperature. Any food meant to be kept cold will be delivered in ice packs. All food delivered by Panera is safe to be consumed after being left out for a couple of hours. If students wish to heat up their food, they can do so in their kitchens.

Disclaimer: The meal plan may not be suitable for every student. We do our best to provide a variety of food for a large group of people. However, food is ultimately a very individualized concept. Therefore, our meal plan options may not be suitable for all dancers. If your danc-er has severe/life threatening allergies, gluten allergy, nut allergy, is a picky eater, etc. We strongly suggest you not purchase the meal plan.

Should your dancer be on the Meal Plan and have dietary restrictions or allergies, please note this when registering AND please email [email protected] before your dancer arrives so that our caterers have sufficient notice to prepare meals for your dancer. If students are dismissed from housing, they are also dismissed from the meal plan. You must register for the meal plan when registering for the program. If you did not purchase the meal plan when registering, but wish to add the meal plan, you must contact Guest Relations one week prior to your dancer’s arrival.

If your dancer has registered and paid for multiple weeks of the Meal Plan then decides they do not want the Meal Plan anytime before their intensive is over, no refunds or credits will be given for the remaining weeks/days. Joffrey is not responsible for the frequency a dancer uses their Meal Plan. It is the dancer’s choice whether they eat both meals or not. Joffrey does not offer any refunds once the Meal Plan has been purchased. If a student decides they do not want to continue using their Meal Plan, that is on the student. If dancers are attending multiple weeks, they may choose to purchase one or more weeks of the plan and do not have to buy the plan for all weeks attending. If your dancer is unsure about the food, we suggest taking this route.

Housing staff takes dancers to a nearby grocery store each Sunday after check in. Students not on the Meal Plan can purchase food for the week during this time. Buying groceries may be a better alternative for those unsure about the Meal Plan. Please keep in mind the appli-ances available to make food in each dorm. East 3rd: Breakfast AND Dinner are delivered daily at 7AM (unless posted otherwise) Monday - Saturday. On Sundays, breakfast is delivered at 7AM, and dinner at 6PM. Students should take their dinners to their apartments and store the food in their fridges if they wish. Students may also eat their dinners for lunch and eat dinner elsewhere. Both meals are delivered at 7AM to accommodate Ticketed and Dorm Activities, rehearsal and performance schedules, as well as various intensive schedules.

Unclaimed meals are cleaned up and donated if not picked up by 12PM daily. If students wish to receive both meals that day, they must pick them up by 11AM daily (on weekends as well), or they forfeit their meal. RAs do not have a place to store unclaimed meals nor will they de-liver meals to student’s apartments. If dancers are attending a Ticketed Activity; will have a conflicting rehearsal with the dining hall hour times; is performing; etc., students on the Meal Plan will still pick up their dinners at breakfast at 7AM. Students can then choose to take their dinner with them or store it in their apartment fridge. Meals not claimed by 12PM will be donated or thrown away. Meals will not be saved.

RAs also rotate being “on-call” daily during daytime hours in addition to overnight shifts. The RA on Call is available to take students to the doctor, PT, ER, bring home sick students, etc. The RA on Duty can be reached 24/7at 646-554-8305 or [email protected]. If you or your dancer ever have a question, you are welcome to call, text, or email the RA on Duty.

SecurityFront desk security personnel are present 24/7 to monitor access to the building. Security monitors every person who enters and exits the building through student’s ID access cards. All building activity is monitored through a multiple camera surveillance screen 24/7 by the security personnel at the security desk.

How To Report Incidents/Rule Violations/Roommate Conflicts/MaintenanceIf students would like to report an incident (rule violation, roommate conflict, maintenance, etc.) they should contact the RA on Duty and describe the incident.

For a reported violation of the rules, the RA will open an investigation, which will result in an Incident Report. Unless the student(s) is directly involved in the incident, they will not be in-formed of details or outcomes of the investigation.

For a roommate conflict, an RA will meet with the student to determine if roommate mediation is needed. See Protocol for Room Changes for the full procedures.

For maintenance reports, students should call or text the Duty Phone and record the issue in the “Maintenance” binder at the front security desk. The front desk will notify the super-intendent and he will address the problem as soon as possible. If the maintenance problem persists, students should tell the RA on Duty so they can intervene.

Pace Room Keys At check in, students will be issued a key card. Students will carry the card at all times, as it allows them to get past the turnstiles and unlock their room. Students may NOT give or lend key cards to any person (whether they are a resident or not). Security will not allow students to pass through the turnstiles without their own key. For lockouts, call the RA on Duty, who can let you in. There is one courtesy lockout, and all subsequent lockouts are $5.

East 3rd Room KeysAt check-in, students will be issued an apartment key, mailbox key, and a key fob. Students will carry their keys, mailbox key, key fob at all times, as it allows them to enter the building and unlock their apartment. Students may NOT give or lend room keys to any person (whether they are a resident or not). The East 3rd front desk requires you to present your access card or ID every time you enter and exit the building. You will also be given a mailbox key. There is a $50 charge for lost apartment keys lost for the first time and $70 if lost a second time. There is a $75 charge for lost key fobs and a $20 charge for lost mailbox keys. For lockouts, call the RA on Duty, who can let you in. There is one courtesy lockout, and all subsequent lockouts are $5. Please do NOT lock bedroom doors as they tend to close easily.

Roommate RequestsStudents may request a particular roommate who is the same gender and will be residing in housing for the same time period for a $100 fee. Should you request a particular roommate, we will make every effort to accommodate your request but we do NOT guarantee that you will be assigned to a room with your requested roommate. If you arrive on check-in day and have not been given the roommate you requested, you may politely ask if a switch is possible in order to accommodate the request. Please do not become frustrated with staff if they are unable to accommodate the request. Dormitories are filled to capacity, which leaves very little room to make changes at the last minute. To request a roommate, you must do so when registering for the program. Roommate Requests are now CLOSED for ALL NY Intensives. Room ConditionAn RA will perform a room condition inspection and fill out a Room Condition Report to list any pre-existing damage you may notice. If you find something after the RA inspects, please let them know as soon as possible. Failure to report damages within the first 24 hours of your move-in may result in damage fees during check out.

Students are not permitted to paint, damage or make any changes to room walls, floors, bathroom or furniture. Do not place any nails, screws, hooks, thumb tacks or any unapproved adhesive substances in or on the walls. Students violating this policy will be required to pay for the room to be restored. Poster putty and command strips can be purchased at any local hardware store, which is the only approved adhesive. Only PAINTERS TAPE is allowed on the walls. Command Strips, thumb tacks, and wall putty are prohibited on any surface.

Room LayoutStaff works hard to prepare the rooms prior to arrival. This means the beds, dressers, desks, and wardrobes are configured in a manner to maximize space in the room. Please do not rearrange the furniture in the room as this is against building policy. Unbunking beds, taking down lofts, moving furniture, etc will result in fines.

Health Forms and Signed DocumentsIn order for Joffrey staff to take your students to the doctor, we require a health waiver. You must fil l in this form when registering as well as bring a hard copy to check in. This paperwork will be emailed to you prior to your arrival and there will be blank copies when you check-in. Even if you email the form or submit it electronically, housing requires a hard copy on file. If you do not bring a hard copy when you check-in to the dormitory, you will be required to fill one out.

Joffrey Housing staff escorts students 17 years old and younger to the doctor. These students are required to have an adult accompany them to any medical facility and act as their guardian. If your student is a minor (under 18 years old) and requires an escort to the doctor, we request that special non-emergency doctor’s appointments (physical therapy, MRIs, follow up doctor’s appointments, etc.) be scheduled and the RA on Duty notified within 48 hours’ notice (2 days in advance).

For emergencies, staff members will be available through the Duty Phone. In the event your dancer wakes up sick and would like to go to Urgent Care or a walk-in clinic, every effort will be made to accommodate your dancer, but it is possible the staff may not be immediately available. We will coordinate with your student and do our best to schedule a staffed escort for an Urgent Care trip on the same day.

Please note some Urgent Cares may not take your insurance. If there is a specific Urgent Care or medical facility you want your child to go to, please tell the RA on Duty. Otherwise, the student will be taken to the nearest Urgent Care (see “Medical Instances” for exact Urgent Care locations).

In an emergency, students will be taken to the ER. If a student is at the studio during an emergency, a Joffrey Admin Staff member will assist the student in getting to the ER and wait with the housing student until an RA can get to the medical facility. If the emergency occurs in the dorms, an RA will assist the student in getting to the ER.

Students MUST be checked out by 12PM EST on Saturday. If your student does not have to depart the dorm until after 12PM due to a later flight or departure time, they must still check out of their apartment by 12PM EST. Students waiting to depart are welcome to sit in a common area (lounge or basement) until their departure time, but they cannot wait upstairs in the apartments or rooms. Students who are staying multiple weeks do not need to check out and back in every weekend.

Students must sign up for a checkout time by the Wednesday prior to their departure. The checkout time designates the time at which students are expected to hand in their keys and ID card and have a housing staff member check their room. At the time the student signs up to check out, a housing staff member will come to the student’s room, make sure the student has cleaned their room/apartment, check for damages, and the student will hand the RA their keys and ID card. When you sign up for a specific check out time, you must be ready to check out at that time. Otherwise, you will have to wait until another RA becomes available. Some weeks, staff has to check out 100 or more students and may not be available to reschedule your check out time immediately. Please plan accordingly and do not be late. Students may check out on Friday or Saturday, but no later than 12PM EST on Saturday.

Students are expected to DEEP CLEAN their room, kitchen, and bathroom before departing. Students who fail to clean their rooms and common areas will be charged $150 for Improper Check Out. We recommend that students take a picture of their room and text/email it to their parents for approval before departing. Those who do not turn in their keys or ID card at check out will be charged accordingly. Those who do not check out with an RA will also be charged $150 for Improper Check Out. If one or more of your suitemates are checking out but you are staying, you and your remaining roommates must clean the apartment for the arrival of new students the next day. This also means making room in the common areas, closets, drawers, etc for the new student(s) checking in the next day.

To help this process, RAs perform room/apartment inspections once a week and gives reminders each Sunday to clean rooms. Students who fail room/apartment inspections are subject to fines.

Parents/guardians cannot check their student out. Students must be present for check out. Students are welcome to check out in the morning before classes and have their parents/guardians pick up their luggage from the RA on Duty during the day.

Joffrey Ballet School and its staff are not liable or responsible for items that are left behind after your dancer leaves. Joffrey will not mail any left items or keep any items left behind. Items left behind will be thrown away/donated.

Protocol for Room ChangesWe believe having a roommate/suitemates and developing social skills is an integral part of the education offered by Joffrey. Therefore, it is very important that students talk to housing staff about any roommate conflicts. If students do not take the initiative to speak with an RA about any issues, the staff cannot aid in resolving the conflict. RAs must perform a Roommate Mediation as the first step in trying to resolve the conflict. During the mediation, the RA will listen to all parties and allow each student to speak to their view of the conflict. The RA will then guide students in resolving the conflict. At the end, the RA will help the students create a Roommate Agreement or Contract. All students will sign this contract and live with the rules for 5 days. After 5 days, an RA will meet with the students again to see if the conflict has been resolved. If the conflict has not been resolved, the RA will speak with the HRA/DRL to see if there is anywhere to move students. Please note that dorms are almost always at capacity and moving students may not be possible.

To recap, for students to be considered for a roommate change, students must do the following:1. When there is a conflict with a roommate, students contact the RA on Duty and

seek help. 2. Students have a mediated conversation with their roommate(s) and an RA to reach

a compromise.3. A Roommate Agreement/Contract is created and signed by all roommates involved. 4. Students must try their best to live up to their end of the compromise for 5 days.5. At the end of the five-day period, the RA checks-in individually with each student,

and then hosts a discussion with all roommates to see how things are going.6. If a roommate change is needed as determined by the RA and HRA, the HRA will

work with the DRL to see if there is any bed availability to move students.

If the conflict is unable to be resolved, the student(s) may be eligible for a room switch if there is available space in the building (East 3rd will be at full capacity during the majority of the summer).

1. RA speaks with the DRL/HRA to communicate the situation and recap the mediation.

2. If there is available space in the building, HRA and/or DRL find a new room/apartment for the student.

3. The roommate moving out must fully pack their belongings and completely clean their area.

4. The RA reviews the room condition and notes any new damages/charges.5. The original room keys are collected. New keys issued. RAs follow up on new

living arrangement.

Escorted trips to and from the studios are on a sign up only basis. Housing staff departs the dormitories once a morning for the studios at a scheduled time to provide an escorted trip for students ages 14 and up who sign up. There is also one scheduled return trip at the end of the day from each studio for students who sign up. Students in this age group are not required to travel with the escorted trip, but they are required to travel in groups of 2 or more students when leaving the building (with the exception of going to the pharmacy or supermarket in the immediate vicinity).

It is the student’s responsibility to be on time for the scheduled departure to and from class. If the student misses the escorted trip and wants a staff member to escort them to the studios or back again then they must wait until a staff member leaves for the studios or the dormitory on school business – a special trip will not be made for students who missed the escorted trip. If students do not show up for the scheduled departure, the trip will be cancelled. In order to accommodate all class start and end times, students may have to travel to class 1.5-2 hours early in the morning or wait 15-45 minutes before departing the studios for the dorms in the evening.

Students must sign up for an escort by 9PM the evening before the escort is requested. Students must sign up for an escort at the RA on Duty desk every day. The RA on Duty will stop taking escort sign ups at 9PM every night. An Escort Schedule is posted each week with departure and pick up times for those students who signed up. If students have signed up in advance, the RA will wait up to 5 minutes after the scheduled departure time. If students have not shown up five minutes and after attendance is taken, after the scheduled departure time, the staff member will cancel the trip. After class, students who requested an escort are expected to change clothes, collect their belongings, and meet their escort in the designated meeting spot immediately after class has ended.

Chaperone students (ages 12-13) are never allowed to travel without a staff member. All Chaperone students will automatically be assigned to an escort group every day and do not need to sign up.

Curfew is the time at which students under 21 must sign-in and remain in the building for the duration of the evening. Students will also turn in their keycards to the RA on Duty at this time (see Key Collection for full policy). By signing in for the night, students are promising to remain in the building until 6:00AM the following morning. Sign in for curfew will happen at the RA on Duty desk in the basement Rec Room West. Students will not be allowed to sign in for other students. Joffrey requires that students physically present themselves in front of the RA on Duty for curfew sign in.

Students who are ages 14-17 must sign-in each night by 9:00PM.Students 18 - 20 must sign in each night by 11:00PM.Students 21 and older do not have a curfew but must tell the RA on Duty if they will be back after 12PM.

Sign-in will be available beginning at 8PM each evening. Once a student is signed in for the night, they will not be allowed out of the building except in the case of an emergency (health emergency, building fire, etc).

A student may be signed out of the dormitory past curfew if they are with an authorized adult chaperone. An authorized adult chaperone is hereby defined as a parent, guardian, relative or family friends over the age of 21. The authorized chaperone cannot be another Joffrey student. Only legal guardians can request curfew extensions and overnights for students. Parents/legal guardians MUST EMAIL all Curfew Extensions/overnight OR submit them on the Dancer Portal. Extensions will NOT be accepted via call or text. The RA On Duty will then EMAIL parents/legal guardians to confirm the extension. Extensions are not confirmed until an RA EMAILS the parent back, approving the extension. Quiet Hours & Courtesy Hours: To accommodate a variety of sleeping schedules, quiet hours are in effect from 10PM to 7AM (weeknights) and 12PM-7PM (weekends). This means voices should be kept at a low volume, headphones should be worn to listen to music, etc. Courtesy hours exist 24 hours a day. Volume from any individual room should not extend beyond the walls of that room.

After 10PM, students may not have Joffrey housing students/guests in their apartment. If students wish to socialize after 10PM, they MUST do so in the basement rec rooms. Students must be in their OWN room by MIDNIGHT each night. Students are not permitted in the lounges, hallways, or laundry room after MIDNIGHT. The RA on Duty will perform “rounds” each night at 12AM where they monitor the hallways and common areas to ensure students are adhering to these times and rules. Students found out of their rooms at 12AM will receive a strike and be subject to fines.

Room Visitation Policy: Joffrey students are only permitted to enter apartments of other Joffrey students of the same gender. They may not visit any apartment occupied by students of the opposite sex or of students in another summer program. They are free to socialize with students of any gender in the basement and outdoor patio. Students may not be in each other’s rooms or apartments after 10PM. If they wish to socialize after 10PM, they must do so in the common areas / lounges. ALL students must be in their OWN room / apartment by MIDNIGHT every night. Curfew extensions are NOT approved until a confirmation EMAIL has been sent to the legal guardian of the student.

Key CollectionEvery night at curfew, students 20 years and younger will have to turn in either their apartment key, mailbox key, and fob (if at E 3rd) OR their key cards (if at PACE) to the RA on Duty when they sign in for curfew. This ensures students are not leaving the dorm after curfew and al-lows staff to take inventory of keys every night. Students can retrieve their keys every morning when signing out for class at the RA on Duty desk. On the weekends, students will also need to come to the RA on Duty desk before leaving the building for the day. Students who do not collect their keys in the morning will be notified via text to pick up their keys. Students who do not turn in their keys at curfew will receive a $5 fine each time they do not turn in their keys.

BUILDING POLICIES

Our goal is to give dancers an experience to remember while being safe. Safety is a concern for many parents and we want you to know we treat each and every dancer as family. Our housing facilities have strict rules in place to protect you and all those around. Please be conscious of these rules during your stay. Students are expected to fully comply with requests and directives given by Joffrey personnel, including instructors and all Residence Life staff. This includes requests for attendance at meetings, preferred behavior, and other community living etiquette that RAs require. Failure to comply with Joffrey personnel is considered a display of disobedience or disrespect and may result in referral to the Director of Residence Life for disciplinary action.

Consequences Abiding by Joffrey’s standard of Excellence is your number responsibility. Your actions have consequences. Ask yourself, if it is really worth it . Strike 1 — First warning and phone call home.Strike 2 — Second warning, call home, and possible class suspensionStrike 3 — Dismissal from housing without a refund. Students dismissed from the intensive will also be dismissed from housing with a refund. For all strikes, the student will call home, in the presence of an RA, HRA and/or DRL. The Executive Director makes decisions for class suspension and dorm dismissals, though with input from The Director of Residence Life and the Head RA.

Please note this strike system does not apply to all housing violations. The Director of Residence Life may suspend the strike system at any time at their discretion. Alternative consequences include, but are not limited to, early sign in, early room curfew, “work hours” (helping the RAs by hanging posters, making door decorations, etc.), and assistance with trash removal and/or cleaning rooms.

Please be advised certain actions can result in dismissal from housing. These include, but are not limited to, drug/alcohol violations, guest policy violations, unauthorized entry violations, and repeated code of conduct violations. All dormitory dismissals are made by the Director of Operations with input from the Director of Residence Life, Head RA, and Artistic Director. Students dismissed from the intensive will also be dismissed from housing.

*Housing staff are prohibited from discussing punishments or consequences of violations with parties not directly involved. When multiple students are involved in a violation, housing staff will disclose punishments/consequences to the parent/guardian of those under 18 and the account holder of those 18 and older ONLY. Housing staff will not disclose any information to the other parents/guardians/account holders of students involved in the violation.*

Access: Staff will enter any room as necessary for routine health and safety inspections, and in the case of an emergency. Staff will randomly inspect the student’s premise without advance notice to ensure the student’s adherence to the rules and regulations of the building. During non-emergency situations, staff will acknowledge their presence by knocking.

Care and Cleanliness of Rooms: For health and safety reasons, students are responsible for the cleanliness of their rooms, as well as common areas. Charges will be assessed for noticeable damages. Students are expected to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness for their rooms and bathrooms. Therefore, staff will inspect rooms regularly to maintain cleanliness standards.

In the event that a student will be out of the dormitory overnight (or for the weekend), the parent or guardian must send an email to:[email protected]/[email protected] at least 24 hours in advance. Fitness Center: NO Joffrey students are allowed in the fitness/gym room in ANY dorm. This room cannot be monitored 24/7 by a staff member. Students will NOT be given access to these rooms.

Furniture: No furniture may be moved from one room to another, and no furniture may be removed from the building or apartment. Bunk beds cannot be broken down. Rearranging the furniture is prohibited. Those who rearrange, move, or dismantle furniture such as unbunking beds or lofts are subject to fines.

Hallway Etiquette: Rehearsing, running, socializing/hanging out, and/or playing sports are not allowed in the hallway. Students are encouraged to stretch and practice in the studios before class begins. Food and drinks are not permitted in the hallways. Students are also not permitted to sit and socialize in the hallway, as it blocks egress and voices carry, which disrupts the whole floor.

Lice: If a student is found with lice, they are not permitted to attend class until they have been checked and cleared by a professional. This is to help contain the lice and prevent the spread of lice. Staff will help students bag their items and instruct them to wash clothing and fabric on high heat. Bedding must be washed daily until the students have been cleared – otherwise, if their hair is lice free but lice are on their pillowcase from the previous evening, they could give themselves lice again.

Lincender is the closest professional lice service (55th and 8th Ave). They provide free

screenings and can treat lice, although the treatment is expensive. Students do not need to pay the professional for treatment, but they must be cleared by lice professionals in order to continue dance.

Reported Missing Items in a Dorm Room: If a student reports a missing item in their dorm room (wallet, backpack, purse, etc), the following procedures will be followed:

1. The student will retrace steps and exhaust all possibilities BEFORE reporting the item missing.

2. If missing items is still not found after all possibilities have been exhausted, the student must tell the RA on Duty they wish to file a report for a missing item.

3. The RA on Duty will create a report and ask the students the following questions:4. When did your item go missing?5. Where was the last place you saw your item?6. Did you take the item to class?7. Where else did you go/what did you do that day?8. Once the report has been filed, the RA on Duty will review with the student all the

places they looked and where they think it was last seen. If the item was last seen in the student’s room, the RA on Duty will:

9. Wait until all roommates are home10. RA will watch all roommates search through their belongings.11. If the item is still not found, the RA on Duty will help student file a police report if they

wish and the student is 17 years old or younger. 12. The RA on Duty will then file an Incident Report and alert the HRA and DRL.

The Joffrey Ballet School is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items. Staff will attempt to help students find reported missing items, but are ultimately not responsible for missing items.

Room InspectionsRAs will perform weekly apartment inspections. Joffrey Ballet School holds students to a high standard of cleanliness and we expect students to keep their living space livable and clean for everyone. RAs will check for bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen cleanliness. Fines will be issued for violations such as stoves/oven left on, dirty fridges, overload of dishes in sinks, dirty showers and toilets, etc… Please see Charge, Penalties, and Fines chart for all possible fines. We understand students are running on tight schedules so we recommend each apartment make “chore charts” for washing dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning bathrooms, etc...

Room Visitation PolicyJoffrey students are only permitted to enter apartments of other Joffrey students of the same gender. They may not visit any apartment occupied by students of the opposite sex or of

students in another summer program. RAs will ensure students are adhering to this time while doing “rounds” each night.

Students caught out of their room / apartment (i.e. in the hallway, lounge, patio, laundry room, etc) at midnight, will receive consequences. Consequences could include, but are not limited to class suspension, fines, early curfew, call home, etc.

Rooftops and Ledges: Students are strictly forbidden to be on the roof, fire escapes, balconies, or building ledges at any time for any reason, except by the request of a New York Fire Official or in case of a true emergency.

East 3rd: All windows at East 3rd have a stopper on the window overlooking the balcony, preventing anyone from gaining access to the balcony. Students are prohibited from tampering or removing this stopper and from dislodging the window to gain access to the balcony. NO students are allowed to be on any balcony on any floor. Those in violation will receive consequences such as fines, class suspension, possible dismissal from housing without a refund, etc.

Outdoor Patios at East 3rd:One of the finer amenities at East 3rd Street is the large outside 2 level patio area. Students may be on the patio, but CANNOT be on the fire escape or fencing. If students climb or pass outside the patio deck area, it is grounds for immediate dismissal from housing without a refund. The patio deck area is defined as the area confined within the gated railing. The fire escapes are strictly off limits. Volume levels are to be kept low at all times while on the patio to avoid noise complaints from neighboring buildings.

Signage: Affixing any signs, flags, or banners anywhere but inside the student rooms is prohibited. Students will receive a strike if signage in hanging in unapproved areas.

Sign In/Out of the Building:All students 14 and older are required to sign in and out of the building with the RA on Duty. Every morning, when students leave for class, they MUST sign out with the RA on Duty at the desk. Any time a student is leaving the dorm, for any reason, they must sign out with the RA on Duty. The RA will note the time the student is leaving and their destination. When students return home after class, or upon reentering the dorm, they must sign in with the RA on Duty as well. If the student wishes to go out again, they must repeat the sign out/in process with the RA on Duty. If students wish to go out after class, they do NOT need to come back to

the dorm to sign in and out again, but they should text/call the RA on Duty with their new destination. When they return (before curfew), they will need to sign back in with the RA on Duty. Students who fail to sign in/out of the building will receive a strike. Chaperone students are always with an RA or housing staff member and do not need to sign in/out of the building. Students are required to sign in/out every day including Saturdays and Sundays if they are not checking out or checking in. If the RA on Duty is not present at the desk, students must text the RA on Duty to sign out or in.

If a student is sick, they need to text/call the RA on Duty so that RA can mark the student as “sick.” If students do not attend classes that day, they may NOT attend rehearsals. Storage: There is no designated storage area other than the storage provided in student apartments. Please consider this when packing. Joffrey Ballet School will not house or store anything that does not fit in student’s rooms and apartments. Theft: Theft, willful destruction, or damage/misuse of any property owned by any member of the community is prohibited. Anyone in violation of this rule will be subject to consequences. If items are reported missing from a dorm room, the standard procedure is to have an RA observe both/all roommates look through their belongings for the missing items after the student files an official report with an RA. There are no exceptions. RAs, at their discretion, may search rooms for items reported missing, whether the missing item(s) is from that room or not, without notice. See “Reported Missing Items In A Dorm Room” for proper policy and procedures. Trash and Recycling Students are responsible for maintaining a reasonable level of cleanliness in their room and in the entire Residence Hall. Joffrey Ballet School does not provide a cleaning service or trash bags. No trash is to be left in the hallway, public area, or stairwell. Leaving trash in any unauthorized location will be grounds for trash removal charge of $100 per incident. Three or more incidents may subject you to termination of your stay. Joffrey Ballet School reserves the right to enter student rooms to assess health and safety conditions.

East 3rd: There is a trash shoot next to the elevator on each floor as well as 2 recycle bins. Each apartment is expected to place their trash in a sturdy bag, which is securely tied shut to prevent spills and leakage, and each student will deposit their trash in the trash shoot or recycling bins on their floor. Boxes should be broken down and placed next to the recycle bins. Students are expected to sort and put recycling into the appropriate bins.

The discovery of illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, will be grounds for immediate dismissal from housing. Tobacco: Purchase, possession, transfer or use of tobacco (all forms) is strictly prohibited in the dormitory. Smoking any substance is forbidden in the dormitory. This includes the use of electronic cigarettes or similar devices. Evidence of tobacco use or any smoked substances, associating with others while they are using tobacco in the residence hall will result in a tobacco violation. State law in New York states that those under 21 are not able to purchase or possess tobacco, thus there is no legitimate place for students to smoke in or outside of the dormitory. Students will be dismissed from housing if any form of tobacco is found or if they are seen smoking in the dormitory or on the fire escapes. Alcohol: Purchase, possession, transfer, use or evidence of use of alcohol will result in immediate dismissal from housing, regardless of age. Possession of empty alcohol bottles and cans is not allowed and will be considered an Alcohol Violation. Smelling of alcohol or associating with others while they are using alcohol will also be considered an Alcohol Violation. New York state law states that for those under the age of 21, it is illegal to purchase or possess alcohol. Joffrey Ballet School has dry residence halls, even for those individuals 21 and over. Students who are 21 or over will also be subject to housing dismissal if they bring alcohol into the dormitory.

the presence of the R.A. to give a report of what has occurred and inform them of the $100 charge. After this phone call, the details from the incident report are available to the account holder.

• Students under the age of 18 must call their parents, regardless of whose name is on the account.

• After all information is collected, the Director of Residence Life, Director of Operations and the Artistic Director will also be informed of the incident.

• Any consequences related to programming (class suspension, production casting, etc.) will be determined by the Artistic Director; dismissal from housing will be determined by the Executive Director.

Illegal Drugs and substances: Purchase, possession, use, evidence of use, transfer or sale of drugs, or any drug related paraphernalia, including but not limited to anabolic steroids, marijuana (including medical marijuana), synthetic cannabis or other mood altering substances (such as K2, Spice, “herbal incense” or “herbal smoking blends”), cocaine, narcotics, LSD, amphetamines or other illegal, un-prescribed drugs or controlled substances will result in dismissal from housing. Associating with others while they are involved with illegal drugs or substances will also be cause for dismissal. Drugs and other intoxication-inducing substances, including synthetics, that are not listed will fall under the drug policy and be treated with the same disciplinary actions.

Bullying and Harassment:Students at Joffrey are expected to treat one another with kindness, respect, and sensitivity. Harassment and bullying are not tolerated at JBS.

Harassment is defined as aggressive pressure and/or continued unwanted comments that have a psychologically damaging affect and create an intimidating, humiliating, hostile or offensive environment.

Bullying is defined as a person who uses strength or power, either verbal or physical, to intimidate others. Bullying is any word(s) (verbal or written), gesture, or action that makes people feel vulnerable, upset, humiliated, undermined, or threatened.

If you find yourself being harassed or bullied at JBS, the first step is to communicate clearly to the individual that you find it offensive and that you expect the behavior/words to cease immediately. If the individual does not stop, come to a staff member and alert them of what is happening.

Students found participating in bullying or harassment (including cyber bullying) are breaking Joffrey Code of Conduct. Thus, consequences could include but are not limited to class suspension, early curfew, dismissal from housing without a refund, etc. If students are dismissed from the program they are also dismissed from housing.

Emergency ProceduresJoffrey Ballet School is committed to maintaining the safety of our community. All threats against the safety of the students and staff will be taken seriously. In the horrible event that an emergency situation occurs in or around a Joffrey facility, these procedures are in place to keep our students and staff members safe.

Protection Tips Within JBS and NYC• Stay alert for the unexpected, suspicious persons, or dangerous situations, especially

when walking alone.• Walk with someone or in groups whenever possible.• Use shadows and reflections from store windows to stay aware of your surroundings.• On the subway, do not display wallets, money, or draw attention to jewelry. Keep your

belongings stowed properly. This is not the time to rearrange the cash in your wallet.• Do not carry more cash than necessary.• If you feel uncomfortable while outside, go into a populated store and find/call a police

officer.• If you feel uncomfortable while in the dormitory, alert the RA on duty.• If you find yourself the victim of a crime when not on JBS premises, contact a police officer.

In case of an emergency, call 911. Otherwise, contact 311 and an officer will help you file a report.

• Look confident in where you are going, how you walk, and what you are doing. Go Bag: Every student should have a backpack ready in their room in case they need to evacuate for a variety of situations. It should be a canvas bag or backpack that includes items such as a granola bar or other snack, a bottle of water, comfortable walking shoes, and a printed set of walking directions to get home. If a terrorist event happens in NYC, subways will likely be closed, cell phone lines jammed, and cabs hard to come by. Your best bet for getting home will be walking. These items will come in handy for making the long journey on foot. Fire: Students should learn the location of the pull stations in case of fire emergency. at the pre-designated area across the street from the dorm until the personnel or HRA give instructions. The adult in charge will give the “all clear’ when the situation has been determined to be safe by the Fire Department. Once the Fire Department declares the scene to be safe, or an adult has checked the building completely, the adult will direct the students to return to the building. Because of the seriousness of this situation, orderly conduct is necessary. Fire drills are conducted in residence halls during the summer, which is a state requirement. Tornado/Severe Weather: In the event of a tornado, personnel will make an announcement. All students should take the stairs to the basement and take cover – staying clear of windows. The R.A.s and/or personnel will give the all-clear signal when the area is safe. Gunman: In the horrible event that an active shooter makes his or her way into a Joffrey dormitory, these procedures are in place to keep our students and staff members safe. Report: Always report any suspicious activity that you observe.Keep alert. If you see someone unfamiliar enter the building, or someone behaving suspiciously, call or text the RAs and leave the area at once. If you overhear another student talking about kill ing people or threatening to bring a weapon to the school, report this to the RAs and law enforcement – you may prevent a disaster by doing so. Do not take their behavior lightly or as a joke. Report it immediately. Alert: Communicate when there is a dangerous situation.Inform as many people as possible within the danger zone that a potentially life-threatening situation exists. This can be facilitated via many different methods (text, email, calling, personal senses). Staff will text and email as many students as possible in order to inform students. Evacuate: If it is safe to do so, remove yourself from the danger zone.If it is safe to do so, evacuate the area. If local authorities ask you to leave the area, they have a good reason to make this request so you should immediately act on their advice. Listen to a radio or television (with headphones) and follow the instructions of local emergency officials and JBS staff. When you evacuate, make sure you hold your hands up when you face police officers and stay

out of their way. If you have information for them, make sure you communicate any updates. Lockdown: Silence All Electronic Devices. Barricade the Room.If you are unable to evacuate safely, find a room with a door that will lock. Lock yourself in and barricade the door, keep quiet, turn off the lights, and hide if necessary. You may communicate with the police if you have information regarding the active shooter’s location, and you may need a plan to counter or evacuate the room if the shooter enters. During a lockdown, do not let anyone into your room. Even if your friend is knocking and yelling for you to let them in – the shooter could be forcing them to do so. For your safety, do not let anyone enter your room after you have locked your door. Violence Or Criminal BehaviorJoffrey Ballet School shares the concerns that our dormitory remains safe and secure. Please be alert and report any suspicious situations and promptly report any threatening, violent or criminal behavior to the duty phone. When reporting an incident, please include the nature and location of the incident, along with descriptions of the people that were involved. Terrorism PreparednessIf a terrorist event happens in New York City while you are in class, follow the directives from Joffrey faculty and staff. If you are not in class when the event occurs, return to the dormitory as soon as it is safe to do so and observe lockdown procedures until further notice. The RAs will conduct a head-count and try to contact those who are not in the dormitory. The RAs will go door to door for updates and to issue the “all clear.” • If things are falling around you, get under a sturdy table or desk. When they stop falling,

leave quickly, watching for obviously weakened floors and stairways. As you exit from the building, be especially watchful of falling debris.

• Leave the building as quickly as possible. Crawl low to the floor if there is smoke. Do not stop to retrieve personal possessions or make phone calls.

• Do not use elevators.• Check for fire, smoke, and other hazards.• Once you are outside, do not stand in front of windows, glass doors or other potentially

hazardous areas.• Move away from sidewalks or streets to be used by emergency officials or others still

exiting the building. If you are trapped in debris: Use a flashlight, if possible, to signal your location to rescuers.• Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can hear where you are.• If possible, use a whistle to signal rescuers.• Shout as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.• Cover your nose and mouth with anything you have on hand. (Dense‐weave cotton material

can act as a good filter. Try to breathe through the material.)
