STOP WINTER WATER

DAMAGE!

Testimonial:

“It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofi ng Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofi ng companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identifi ed the problem as being poorly fi tted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies

It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confi dent that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the fi nal result.”

Yours truly,Richard ReussIndependent Business ConsultantForest Row

A Christmas MessageI like Christmas. There I have said it!

I know it’s fashionable to complain about the busyness of December as we approach Christmas (try being a Vicar!).Then there’s the cost, and the buying of presents and coping with the family, and the fact that there seems to be precious peace and goodwill in the town’s car parks on Christmas Eve and so on. There is always the danger of everybody being exhausted and getting frazzled by lunch on Christmas Day.

yet the first Christmas could not have been much different. People would have been on the move, families going back to their families and birthplaces to register for a census, and the inns were clearly doing a good trade.

Into the middle of all this God arrives. of course, he wasn’t recognised by most people as he had arrived in the shape of a small vulnerable baby born to a seemingly ordinary couple. Emmanuel- God with us.

This Christmas let’s try and recognise God’s presence in our lives whatever those lives are like.

God present in the busyness and any peace and good will. Present too with those for whom Christmas might be particularly difficult this year, the bereaved, the sick, the lonely, and those anxious about their jobs. God is with us in those circumstances too.

Christmas is no less Christmas, and the truth that God became what we are that we might become what he is, is true and the best Christmas gift of all.

The Reverend Canon Clive Everett-Allen, St. Swithuns.

Dog DaycareWhen your dog comes for the day at our daycare centre, you will be greeted by one of our First For Dogs team members. They will show you around our facilities and talk you through what your dog will be experiencing in their day at the daycare centre.

Dog Behaviour TrainingOur approach is to create a calm submissive dog who is a proud member of your pack, who is content, happy and peaceful. ItÕs best to address your dogs issues rather than allow them to escalate. If your dogÕs bad behaviour goes unchecked for too long, it always worsens into a much more stressful, dangerous and unpleasant problem. Please refer to our website for details on our methods and philosophy.

When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that

Help it’s nearly Christmas and I have got to do something with myself!

Familiar?

Don’t worry, there are things that you can do to dramatically improve the situation,

starting with a lovely warm bath. Put some olive oil in the water – it makes a dreadful

mess of the bath, but drastic times call for drastic measures, and apply the following face mask, then lie back in the water and relax - a calm face looks years younger than a stressed one.

Take two tablespoons of porridge oats and add to a cup of whole milk and heat to thicken. I know this is porridge, but lactic acid from the milk will remove dead cells, and the oats are softening. Add two tablespoons of olive oil, which will moisturise, and allow to cool. When just warm, apply to your cleansed face and leave on for 10-20 mins, depending on how much time you can spare. Wash off and pat dry before applying your favourite moisturiser. Voila! Softer, brighter skin ready for makeup.

Now, the eyes are said to be the windows of the soul, so your eyebrows need to be in good shape to frame them. Firstly the shape and position of the brows are important. If you take a pencil or brush and lay it against the line from the base of your nose to the inner corner of your eye, that is where your brows should begin. Then move the brush to a line from the base of the nose to the outer corner of the eye, this is where they should end.

Brush your brows up and then brush along the top line towards the outer edge to lay them down, they should be gently arched. Remove any hairs that are out of

line on both the top and bottom of the brows. If there are any gaps, or a shortfall in the size and shape of the brows, these can be filled in with either fine pencil strokes, or you can use eye shadow in a suitable colour and a stiff, angled brush, which will give a much softer look. Finally, take an old, clean toothbrush and either dip it in Vaseline, or spray with hairspray and brush through the brows to encourage them to stay in place. you are now ready to apply your makeup.

Bearing in mind that a youthful face is unblemished and even toned, a foundation is a good idea, but if this is too heavy for you, then just concealer on the uneven places is a good alternative, as long as it is well blended. Personally, I never use powder, as it does tend to settle in the cracks and crevasses showing them up more, I think a slightly dewy look is much more becoming. Eye shadow and mascara are a must and a good tip to lift a tired face is to apply blusher on the temples at the side of the eyes as well as on the apple of the cheeks. Remember, if you do not have blusher, you can use lipstick, blended well, as it makes a good cream blusher. Finish your look with a pop of lipstick, and there you go - party ready!

I hope that these few tips will encourage you to spend a little time on yourself, don’t end up completely frazzled so that you don’t enjoy this festive season, do have a very Happy Christmas and a brilliant New year. Remember, life is what you make it. Money isn’t everything, hard up and happy is far better than rich and miserable.Contact Helen on: 01342 312433 or 07989 [email protected] Advert below

this affects the preservation and restoration of health.

It is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of virtually every tissue, organ and system of the body. In most cases the treatment is aimed at removing nerve compression and irritation, usually brought on by abnormal alignment of the spinal joints. This misalignment can be caused by accidents, physical stress, mental stress, anxiety, poor diet, lack of exercise and repetitive movements.

Chiropractors use gentle specific manipulation of spinal joints to restore their normal function. The result is an increase in mobility, decrease in pain and discomfort and removal of irritation of the nerves this can lead to a wide range of health benefits.

Increasingly, GPs are recognising chiropractic as an effective complementary treatment, particularly for back pain. Family Chiropractic Sussex regularly receives referrals from GPs to help patients. Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession, so you do not need to be referred by your doctor though we say by all means check with by your GP if you feel it necessary before treatment.

WHAT IS CHIRoPRACTIC SuPPoRTED By?

The effectiveness of chiropractic treatment is supported by scientific research as well as by various uK government and medical organisations. The profession is regulated through the General Chiropractic Council.

WHAT ARE SoME oF THE SuCCESSES AT FAMILy CHIRoPRACTIC SuSSEx?

It’s difficult to pick one out... I’ll mention a recent success from a tree surgeon who was incapacitated by shoulder pain. He said: “I have been working for some years cutting down trees and branches and it was in December that I noticed my arm was very painful from the shoulder downward. I didn’t want to take drugs as prescribed by my doctor and a friend told me of Family Chiropractic Sussex. I had given up my job by now and I was in agony at night and unable to sleep. Dr Teresa examined me and took four x-Rays and discovered that my spine was bent. After just six weeks I was back at work with my arm a lot stronger than I thought could be possible…”

The Mummers’ Play is a traditional folk drama that dates back to at least the Middle Ages and was popular throughout England in various forms and names.

It has been speculated that the theme of the play is the continuing cycle of death and resurrection. Thus it is part of the struggle of good against the forces of evil, and helps to ensure that Spring follows a severe Winter - something that should not be taken for granted… The actual significance of the individual characters has largely been lost and can only be re-understood by those taking part over many years.

Alternatively, recent research suggests that it is more likely to have been based on eighteenth century chapbook plays as a way of extorting funds from the rich farmers and landowners…perish the thought!

The word Mummer may have come from the Greek or old German meaning mask. Thus a labourer would don a disguise to become a mummer in much the same way as someone dress in vestments to become a priest.

How the plays started and how they ended up being performed in thousands of villages across the south of England is unknown. Each village seems to have had its own version, but what is perhaps most interesting is how similar each is in script and characters. A number of plays were still being performed in Sussex into the twentieth century, but seem to have been killed off by the First World War. Perhaps the performers left for war and never came back, or had seen such sights that they felt the play was no longer relevant. When the Ashdown Mummers started there were very few other groups but these days there are a lot more, some of whom write their own modern version.

The World Famous Ashdown Mummers started

in 1973 when Simon Lewis, who had joined the recently formed Ashdown Forest Morris Men, became interested in folk traditions. Whilst researching, with Jon Checkley in East Grinstead Library, Simon came across a script for a mummers’ play and thought it would be interesting and fun to perform at Christmas. He took the initiative, made copies of the script and persuaded a few of the Morris Men and some school friends to perform the play on the Ashdown Forest Morris Men’s Christmas Tour. The following year the ‘Ashdown Mummers’ toured round the pubs of the Ashdown Forest and have been doing so every year since on the weekend before Christmas! So 2012 is their 40th Christmas. They have never missed a year and 3 of the original group in 1973 (St George, The Doctor and Beelzebub) have been in every performance!

The Mummers started because it was interesting and fun, and carry on for the same reasons. over the years they have gathered a strong following, many of whom see the play every year. The play gives the people of the Ashdown Forest a real Christmas

experience not tainted by commercialism. Audiences love the traditional Father Christmas dressed all in green and with the other characters, including Beelzebub, Little Johnny Jack and the Turkish Knight make it a night to remember.

old acquaintances will turn up again after many years away, they always seem to know where to find the Mummers who are keeping a small part of England as it should be. Lots of other performers join in at different times over the weekend: singers, musicians, hand-bell ringers, which all adds up to an inspiring start to Christmas.

Many thousands of pounds for local charities has been raised over the years as it is customary that, having been fortunate to witness one of these rare performances, the onlooker contributes to ‘the Bag’. This in turn will assure a peaceful Christmas and their good luck during the following year!

Geraldine tells us about Grandmothers of today compared to when she was a little’un:

When my granddaughters Ellie and Alice were little, they often used to ask me what I did for a living, and as they were too small to understand what a journalist was, I always said I was a pirate, an explanation they found perfectly plausible.

So when I wrote my first book, I thought it would be fun to write about a Gran who used to be a pirate. We had always pretended that a crocodile lived under my four-poster bed, and when going into the bedroom we would do a running jump on to it so he didn’t bite our ankles!

Although grandparents play a huge part in many children’s lives, grandparents are largely invisible in children’s fiction - the only one I could think of was the grandmother in Little Red Riding Hood and she gets eaten right at the start!

But Pirate Gran is very funny and feisty and puts the grrrrrr into granny.

Grandmothers have changed enormously since I was a child. My own was a Victorian, and she believed children should be seen and not heard. She left school at 14 to go into service and she had a very hard life indeed.

My father was the youngest of her ten children and shortly after he was born she was widowed and

had to bring up her family on her own. She took in washing to make ends meet, and there is a family story about how she went to the dentist one day to have a tooth removed and it was 2/- with anaesthetic, and 1/- without, so she had the 1/- without because she didn’t have the extra shilling.

Stories like that are utterly heartbreaking, and they go a long way to explain why, by the time I remember her in her eighties, there wasn’t much fun left in her - but she loved her grandchildren and there wasn’t one of the 40 of us who didn’t get a hand-knitted present for Christmas.

So when my grandchildren say I am ‘fun’ I do think how very lucky women of my generation are to have had the education and career opportunities our own grandmothers were denied, and I am very grateful for that.

I can’t wait to see what the theatre company will do with Gran, but I know there will be pyrotechnics, as the Grandpa in the stories does tend to get blown up rather a lot!

The third book, Pirate Gran and the Monsters is just out (published by the National Maritime Museum) and I have another book due out next year about the two naughtiest old women in the world...

Geraldine Durrant is a local children’s author, her first book Pirate Gran and her second Pirate Gran goes for Gold have both been published in several countries. The next phase in Pirate Gran’s career is a musical based on the books which is being adapted for the stage by the Scamp theatre company whose previous adaptations include The Gruffalo. It will be touring the uK in the first half of 2014 and will be at the Edinburgh Festival that summer.

Work has started on the roof of St. Mary’s church in Windmill Lane, the scaffolding is erected and looks very impressive. Some of the high level gutters have already been taken down, many of these need replacing and as they are decorative cast iron this is not cheap, but is necessary to maintain the character of this Victorian building.

There many other repairs needed on the roof and work will con-tinue into December but it is hoped will be finished in time for the Tree festival. Fundraising will be continuing for a quite a while yet!!

A Different type of Gift this Christmas?THIS FESTIVE SEASON, WHY NOT DECIDE TO GIVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT: YOUR TIME , YOUR

EXPERIENCE, YOUR KNOWLEDGE, YOUR SYMPATHY, YOUR HELP …..

TRY VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering, despite its recent time in the limelight through the olympics and the Big Society initiative, is not new – people have been volunteering, often without any public acclaim, for hundreds of years. But perhaps it is now more formalised, and is also recognised as being beneficial to the volunteer, as well as the people or organisation being helped.

Volunteering is a way to meet new people, to learn new skills, or use your existing experience in a different setting, and it has been shown to be good for your physical and mental wellbeing. It can provide a way to get back into work after a break, give a boost to your CV, or be a new activity for retirement.

Chequer Mead, The Town Museum, Standen, Age uK East Grinstead, Glen Vue older People’s Day Centre, queen Victoria Hospital …………..what all of these have in common, apart from being in East Grinstead, is that they are all places where people volunteer

locally and, in some cases, are almost completely run by volunteers. They are amongst the hundreds of varied volunteering opportunities available at any one time.

Why not give it a try? you can do as much or as little as you are able, and even a few hours a month can make all the difference. To find out more, contact Loral Bennett at East Grinstead Volunteer Centre, on 01342 328080, or [email protected].

New Neighbourhood Plan Website launchedwww.eastgrinsteadplan.org.uk

East Grinstead Town Council has launched a new website dedicated to the Neighbourhood Plan where you can directly have your say on the town’s future.

A neighbourhood plan is a document produced and agreed by and for a locality within a District. When formally adopted, it forms part of the local development framework that guides decisions about new development in the area.

The site has been developed with interaction in mind to encourage residents to give views or volunteer to be involved in the process.

The Town Council is continuing the consultation that will draw the plan together before it is given over to public consultation early in 2013.

Please take a look.

According to a custom of Christmas cheer, any two people who meet under a hanging of mistletoe are obliged to kiss.

But where did it all start?

Shakespeare called it ‘the baleful Mistletoe,’ an allusion to the Scandinavian legend. one theory is that the Norse god Balder, the god of Peace was the best loved of all the gods. His mother Frigga, goddess of love and beauty loved her son so much that she wanted to ensure no harm would come to him. So she went through the world, securing promises from everything that sprang from the four elements - fire, water, air, and earth - that they would not harm her beloved Balder.

Leave it to Loki, a sly evil spirit, to find the loophole which was the parisitic mistletoe which does not grow from the earth. It takes seed through bird-dung landing on trees, the birds having ingested the berries (urgh…). Loki made an arrow from its wood and what’s worse, he took the arrow to Hoder, Balder’s brother, who was blind. By guiding Holder’s hand, Loki directed the arrow at Balder’s heart, and he fell dead.

Frigga’s tears became the mistletoe’s white berries. There’s a happy ending with Balder being restored to life. Frigga is so grateful that she reverses the reputation of the offending plant - making it a symbol of love and promising to bestow a kiss upon anyone who passes under it.

Mistletoe was held in great reverence by the Druids, they thought it a curative for everything from infertility to epilepsy... They believed Mistletoe protected its possessor from all evil.

Commonly used as a Christmas decoration, it traditionally remained hung throughout the year, often to preserve the house from lightning or fire, until it was replaced the following Christmas Eve.

In Britain, eating mince pies at Christmas dates back

to the 16th century. It is still believed that to eat a mince pie on each of

the Twelve Days of Christmas will bring 12 happy months in the year to follow – so now you have a

good excuse!

Festivities were banned by Puritan leader, oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry, on what was supposed to be a holy day, to be immoral.

The only celebration was by a sermon and a prayer service. The ban was lifted only when the Puritans lost

power in 1660.

The custom of singing Christmas carols is very old - the earliest English collection was published in 1521.

“Hot cockles” was a popular game at Christmas in medieval times. It was a game in which the other

players took turns striking the blindfolded player, who had to guess the name of the person delivering each blow. “Hot cockles” was still a Christmas pastime until the Victorian era.

Frankincense is a sweet smelling gum resin derived from certain Boswellia trees which, at the time of Christ, grew in Arabia, India, and Ethiopia. Tradition says that it was presented to the Christ Child by Balthasar, the black king from Ethiopia or Saba. The frankincense trade was at its height during the days of the Roman Empire. At that time this resin was considered as valuable as gems or precious metals. The Romans burned frankincense on their altars and at cremations.

Christmas was once a moveable feast celebrated at many different times during the year. The choice of December 25, was made by Pope Julius I, in the 4th century A.D., because this coincided with the pagan rituals of Winter Solstice, or Return of the Sun. The intent was to replace the pagan celebration with the Christian one.

Due to the time zones Father Christmas has 31 hours to deliver gifts? This means 62,919 would need to be delivered per second!

Did you know?

Give the Birds a Christmas Present!A great way to keep the kids busy and interested in nature and help birds through the Winter!

Basic Recipe for Suet balls for Birds:

Ingredients: Package of Suet plus any of the following: bird seeds, peanuts, high energy seeds, sultanas bread crumbs (slightly moist as otherwise they can swell in the stomach) and other pieces birds would like. Please remember, nothing salted or spoiled!

Gently heat the suet, do not boil, and add to a mixing bowl with the rest of the ingredients.

The mix would be approximately one-third suet to two-thirds other ingredients. The texture should be sticky, which will go solid when set.

you can fill old coconuts shells, little yogurt pots or other such containers and leave to set in fridge. If you have an old tree in the garden with ‘holes’ these can be filled with the sticky mixture.

you can use either vegetarian or beef suet.

Local History NotesJohn Mason Neale

by Dorothy Hatswell

Much has been written about Rev John Mason Neale when he was warden at Sackville College and his religious views which made him unpopular with East Grinstead residents for a period. He was a prolific writer and translator. He wrote many carols which were popular in their day. Today he is mainly remembered for the carols, “Good Christian Men Rejoice” and “Good King Wenceslas”. The latter was a Bohemian priest, not a king. What is intriguing is how resonant the words of this carol are to the actions of Neale himself.

“Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen.”

The story of how Neale came to form the Sisters of St Margaret is based on a very similar scenario. Neale wrote in his diary “one dreary autumn afternoon.. looking out on that vast tract of country which is overlooked by my study windows, along which the November rains were then driving in lines almost horizontal I saw the poverty of those who scraped a living on Ashdown Forest”. Wenceslas saw a poor man “gathering winter fuel”, Neale saw people dying from lack of care in the cottages and hovels. The dread of infection was so great that no-one would nurse a case of fever. Neale formed the idea of a community of women who would go amongst the poor and nurse them in their own homes. At the same time they could also care for their souls. Sisterhoods undertaking such voluntary work were becoming more numerous throughout the country. The idea of voluntary nursing for the good of mankind was epitomised in the work of Florence Nightingale in the Crimea.

Neale had written “Carols for Christmas” in 1853 in collaboration with the Rev. Thomas Helmore who helped chose the music. They were inspired by the gift of a rare copy of a Swedish book called “Piae Cantiones “ dating from 1582. Two years later he started the Society of St Margaret, an Anglican order of nuns. This aroused feelings in the town as it was felt by many people to smack of Catholicism. Nevertheless Neale went ahead and set up his Sisters in Maresfield, as nowhere suitable in East Grinstead was

available. He frequently walked the fourteen miles to visit them and back again. This was clearly not sustainable, especially given his own poor health. Fortunately, a building in the High Street, close to Sackville College, became vacant and the sisters moved into it. In addition to housing the sisters doing the nursing outside the convent, growing numbers of orphans were now being taken in.

The first Mother Superior was Sarah Gream known as Sister Ann. She is listed in the 1861 Census with her were six Sisters of Mercy, one of whom was a “candidate for probationer”, a cook and a housemaid. They were responsible for two visitors, a boarder and thirty three scholars, ranging in age from three to sixteen. Suprisingly, one of the Sisters of Mercy was only fifteen years old herself. Sister Ann continued as Mother Superior until 1864, when she was

succeeded by Sister Alice. In 1902 she in turn was followed by Sister Erminilde, one of Neale’s own daughters.

It was becoming apparent that the premises in the High Street were too small to accommodate the growing numbers of orphans that presented themselves for help. This work was in addition to the nursing that took place in the community. By now Neale’s reputation had changed dramatically from his earlier one. The people of East Grinstead began to recognise and admire the humanity of Dr. Neale and suported him in raising money to build a convent which would allow the work of the Sisterhood to expand. on the day in August 1865 that the foundation stone for the new convent was laid, a procession of over two hundred people marched down the High Street to the site in Moat Road. It was made up of clergymen, sisters and town’s people, many carrying banners. The convent in Moat Road opened its doors in 1870. Sadly Neale himself would not see the completed building. He had died four years previously,

on August 6th. 1866, worn out by his long battles against ill health, authority and his efforts for the poor.

one of Neale’s favourite quotations was:

“What is difficult may be done, What is impossible must be done.”

This quotation provided the title of a book, written by one of the Sisters, outlining the history of the Convent ; “Doing the Impossible”.

His legacy lies in two areas. His contribution to the canon of hymns and carols and in the continuing work of the Sisterhood. No longer housed in East Grinstead but in uckfield, the sisterhood still carries out the work of helping the less fortunate to healthier and happier lives. There are also sister convents in many other parts of the world, including Sri Lanka, South Africa and America. Given the many difficulties surrounding his life and work, he can be truly said to have achieved “the impossible”.

Meridian FM at Christmas TimeChristmas is rapidly approaching and Meridian FM is busier than ever bringing you the very best of Christmas cheer. Keep your eyes open for Twiggy (our mobile studio) who is out and about playing your favourite Christmas songs, while keeping you up-to-date on all the Christmas activities and events in the area. We’ll be at the Lingfield Christmas Shopping evening on Friday 7th, then at the Christmas Family Festival and Shopping day in East Grinstead on the 9th.

This year has been a very special year for 107 Meridian FM with the launch of Meridian FM Productions and our radio plays. These will be played out during the winter months to help keep you warm and entertained. This includes our very first radio panto: Dick Whittington, written by creative writers Mike McCahon and Des Henderson of Iglou, and starring well-known personalities from the area. Recorded in front of a live-audience it will be broadcast on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and again on New year’s Eve. Dick Whittington is an appropriate panto to herald the launch of our radio pantos in that it holds a very special place here in East Grinstead with Whittington College’s presence in Felbridge. The College is sheltered accommodation for the elderly, similar to an almshouse and is so named because the original London almshouse (before it moved here to Sussex) was funded by a charitable bequest of the real-life Lord Mayor of London, Richard Whittington.

Tune into 107 Meridian FM or go online at www.meridianfm to listen!

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Meridian FM.
