Patrick Moore the famous Astronomer and former long-term East Grinstead resident, recently passed away at the age of 89. The presenter of “The Sky at Night” was born in Pinner on the outskirts of London. His parents were Captain Charles Moore and his wife, Gertrude and at the time of his birth, on March �th 1923, it was still a small rural community. Before he was a year old the family moved to Aldwick near Bognor where his grandmother lived. He recalled, in an article for “Country Living”, that some of his earliest memories were of playing on the beach and catching shrimps, which were returned unharmed. He once saw a collector catch a butterfly. on learning that its fate was to be pinned to a board, the young Patrick asked to see it and engineered its release. He was a life-long campaigner against any form of occupation which involves killing creatures for so-called “sport”.

Much to his annoyance the family moved again, this time to East Grinstead. For a time he went to prep school here, but from the age of seven spent much of the day in bed. A heart condition precluded him from attending school or playing sport (although a cricket lover) thus he was tutored at home. These restrictions continued until he was about fifteen, one positive result however was that he had

ample time on his hands to spend studying astronomy. He had a small telescope in the garden and first studied the moon, the fascination of which was to last a lifetime. He discovered the Eastern Sea on the far side of the moon years later, using only a conventional telescope. Another focus for his attention was the planet, Jupiter. His mother Gertrude, a talented artist, was also interested in astronomy and later wrote and illustrated a children’s book on the subject, “Mrs Moore in Space”, Patrick contributing the preface.

The coming of the Second World

War found him lying about his age and medical history to join the RAF. He joined Bomber Command and rose to rank of Lieutenant. He suffered injuries which were to return to trouble him in his later years. It was at this time that Patrick became engaged to Lorna, a nurse, who was tragically killed in the London Blitz while driving an ambulance. He never married, saying that “second best is not good enough for me”. After his discharge from the RAF in 19�5 he returned to East Grinstead. By this time his health had improved so that he could now play cricket, bowling leg-breaks and batting

at number eleven. He worked for a few years as a prep school teacher and then was offered the post of director of the Armagh observatory.

Always outspoken, in an interview for the East Grinstead observer in 1958 he is quoted as saying that “it would be easier to go to the moon by spaceship than to travel from East Grinstead to London by British Railways”! While living here he was always pleased to help others locally further their interest in astronomy. For instance, subscribing to an appeal from Ardingly College for a small observatory in their grounds and officially opening it. He was also the president of Crawley Astronomical Society for many years until his move to Selsey. There must have been connections to East Grinstead Grammar School, as a former pupil from the 1950s recalls that a number of pupils went on to have careers in astronomy, possibly because of Moore’s enthusiasm and influence.

His interests outside astronomy were wide and varied. Music was, perhaps, the greatest. He taught himself to play the piano and xylophone and wrote two operettas. Brian May, of Queen, was a close personal friend. A keen chess player, he often took a travelling set with him to challenge people to a game.

Being extremely fond of cats, several cats charities were continually supported and Patrick was quoted as saying that “a catless house is a souless house”.

during his life he wrote over seventy books and was knighted for his services to astronomy in 1988 appearing in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving presenter of the longest running programme on television.

His move to Selsey in 19�8 was largely because the light pollution in East Grinstead was affecting his work, but he still retained links to the town afterwards. For instance, he returned to East Grinstead to open improvements to some sheltered accommodation, dart Court, in September 2001.

Moore died at home on 9 december 2012 and Brian May said this of this of his great friend:

“Patrick was the last of a lost generation, a true gentleman, the most generous in nature that I ever knew, and an inspiration to thousands in his personal life, and to millions through his 50 years of unique broadcasting. It’s no exaggeration to say that Patrick, in his tireless and ebullient communication of the magic of astronomy, inspired every British astronomer, amateur and professional, for half a century. There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one.”

A teenager in Nepal has invented a solar panel from human hair to solve the energy problems of his village, which does not have access to electricity.Inspired by a Stephen Hawking book—which states that human hair could generate static electricity—he “realized that Melanin was one of the factors in conversion of energy”.Based on this idea, he—with the help of his classmates—developed a human-hair solar panel that is able to generate 18 watts of energy, which is approximately the amount of energy required to charge a phone.By replacing the silicon used in solar panels with human hair, he was able to bring down the price of the panel to just uS$38—which is a quarter of the price of a conventional solar panel.If mass-produced, this could be the solution to the energy needs of the developing world.

Are you feeling unfit, lethargic, and generally stressed out after the Christmas and New Year over-indulgences? Gained weight? Well, you are not alone, every January most of us make New Year resolutions to get

fitter, healthier, slimmer, or just to enjoy life with more energy. With a few simple lifestyle “tweaks”, these goals can easily be achieved.

The first important step for a healthier “you” is to try and stay as active as possible. Going into hibernation in the winter months will only increase your risk of getting the winter blues, as exercise releases feel-good hormones that increase alertness, improve your mood and suppresses feelings of fatigue.

If you can’t get to any regular fitness classes, then walking will give you these benefits. Try and walk briskly so that you are slightly out of breath, and aim for at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week minimum.

It is also important to include some strength work into your regular regime. Resistance exercises (i.e. weight training – but I’m not talking pumping iron!) is vital for maintaining body strength. You need to work the muscles a little more against some form of resistance – either at home improvising using small bottles of mineral water as weights, or invest in some hand weights (which you could also use on your walks!) – or go to classes that use weights. Not only will you increase your body strength, but when you add muscle tone your body will burn off those festive calories quicker!

other healthy tips for a new you include not skipping breakfast – this is the most important meal, and

kick-starts your metabolism for the day. Healthy breakfast options include fruit, yoghurt, wholemeal toast, porridge, eggs. Try and include your 5 portions of fruit and veg throughout your meals every day – they are packed with healthy nutrients and low in fat and calories. Include more fish and chicken (skinless) in place of processed meats (and protein helps build those all-important muscle fibres).

Finally, having polished off all those Christmas chocolates by now, swap for healthy snacks, e.g. fruit, raw vegetable sticks, dried fruit, a handful of nuts, etc, for weight loss and better nutrients.

So just a few simple steps can lead to a healthier you ......enjoy!

If you are someone who enjoys the services offered by our local pubs and clubs on a Friday night you can expect to meet a new presence on the streets from next spring. The Street Pastors are coming to town! The Street Pastors are an initiative set up by Churches Together and supported by the police and town council and are there to provide a caring influence on the night-time environment; talking, building relationships and helping those who find themselves vulnerable or in need after their night out.

The scheme was originally developed by Rev Les Isaac in London nearly ten years ago as a response to gun crime, gang culture and urban problems. It is an inter-denominational project with a remit to engage with people on the streets to listen, care and talk with them. The scheme can now be found in over 250 towns across the country and counts over 10,000 Street Pastor volunteers. They have also experienced often dramatic reductions in night-time crime rates during Street Pastor patrols. At the recent launch of East Grinstead Street Pastors Police district Commander Hull revealed that on the Friday nights that Chichester has Street Pastor patrols there has been a 5�% drop in violent crime. There are no Street Pastor patrols on the Saturday and consequently no drop in crime.

East Grinstead Street Pastors are currently recruiting volunteers from local churches and will begin an application and interview process followed by a fifty hour training programme in the New Year. We hope to see our first patrols in East Grinstead during the early spring. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to find out more please contact us at [email protected]

I think that most people (except my colleague dawn and I, who are of course working flat out getting ready for the arrival of the Bluebell Railway later in 2013!) will all be sitting back and thinking about what they are going to do about a holiday this year. It’s certainly a fact that when we return to work after the New Year break, the phones on our desk are usually ringing away. Some of it must be due to families all being cooped up over the Christmas, who are suffering from cabin fever, and need to make plans to get away as fast as they can!

This year many of them will be boarding the luxury Pullman carriages of the Bluebell Railway’s Golden Arrow, which will be departing from the new platform at their station here. Time to start making some plans for the year ahead, and I think you’ll be surprised at some of the things we have in store for you. But even hardened tourism folk need to get away, so you might just catch a glimpse of me slipping in to our local travel agents and making some travel plans of my own!

The Rotary Club of East Grinstead is one of the oldest clubs in East Grinstead having been formed in 1931. It is part of a world wide organisation of over �0,000 clubs, but at the same time it is independent, identifying itself within its locality. our motto is “ Service Before Self “ and our members are people who would like to give something back to local community. We meet weekly enjoying fellowship, and listening to talks by representatives from charities and organisations for whom we raise funds locally and internationally, including disaster areas.

one major ideal of Rotary is to promote Youth Activities in and around this country and throughout the world, and thereby encourage understanding amongst young people. “Youth Speaks” is one we specially support here in East Grinstead. This is an opportunity for teams of young people from schools to express to an audience their own thoughts and ideals for this world. Teams we have sponsored have gone far in this competition, with one reaching the national final.

We also send donations to international charities such as Water Aid, Shelter Box, and take part in Inter Care whereby in-date, but unused medical drugs are collected and then distributed to impoverished needy communities in many parts of this world. Locally, donations have been given to the East Grinstead Tadpoles Club, Multiple Sclerosis, the Queen Victoria Hospital and other many deserving causes.

2� years ago we decided that there was an opportunity to promote the formation of another Rotary Club here in East Grinstead. The Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian was formed and although we are independent, we join on occasions, as at Christmas, to work together. I am sure that people of East Grinstead have seen the Christmas Tree in the High Street and the Christmas Sleigh touring round the roads with Father Christmas and carols playing as we collect to provide gifts for the elderly and infirm, the Blind Club Christmas Lunch and other Rotary Charities. Lacrosse is a fast-paced, full contact outdoor sport with 10 players on each team on the field at a time, with the ability to perform rolling substitutions throughout the game. The object is to catch, carry, and pass a solid rubber ball in an effort to score.

It’s the national sport of Canada but originally it was a Native American sport that was used as training for battles! The field could be a huge stretch of land between villages and games could go on for hours or days.

It dates back to around 1�89 and originally it was played on a field of rough ground with opposing goal trees or posts, if vegetation wasn’t convenient, as much as a mile apart. As one might expect, on-the-field fights were rampant in the native version of lacrosse. Although it might seem counter productive to the game, these fights functioned as a way of toughening up a young man, they were part of the individual rite of passage into manhood.

Lacrosse is a growing sport in England and originally came to this country in 187�. By 1883 there were �0 clubs playing regular fixtures in Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, Middlesex and Yorkshire.

defensively the object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact. The rules limit the number of players in each part of the field and require the ball to be moved continuously towards the opposing goal.

Men’s lacrosse is a common minority sport in universities, it’s growth is due to many ELA initiatives to promote the sport at a grass roots level.

East Grinstead’s Lacrosse Team was established in 200� by a group of friends who had been playing for London based Walcountian Blues, the club has grown since then initially competing in the SEMLA (South of England Men’s Lacrosse Association) east division, coming second in their first year. Since then they were promoted to the Premiership in the second year. In our third competing year they started a second team (East Grinstead A).

East Grinstead is the only mens team not affiliated with a university in Sussex and the club is in the process of starting a women’s team. We are delighted to have been involved with

building a brand new Pavilion for Lingfield

Cricket & Football clubs which also houses the

first class Stables Nursery School. We completed

this project in just 16 weeks!

The run down Pavilion was in need of attention and

when Scandia-Hus heard that The Stables Nursery

School had to find new premises we wanted to get

involved and help both worthy causes. With the help

of many services from the local community, some

of whom worked with us without charge and many

of whom provided their services and supplies at

substantially reduced costs, we built the brand new

Pavilion.

Thanks to the huge support of the local community

and Councillors, planning was granted and we were

able to get the kit delivered to the site on 27th June.

The project had to be completed in a very tight time

scale as the Nursery needed to be moved in by the

end of September!

Teams were totally dedicated to this project and

committed to getting it completed on time. We have

been so fortunate to have benefited from so many

generous organisations. Both Parkgate Construction

and MJA Builders have given their time and services

at massively reduced rates, Moore Scaffolding from

nearby Lingfield provided their services free of

charge.

Additional help and services were provided by

many others including Aldridge & Trillwood, Sadolin,

Provincial Windows, Alincourt, Barge Tiles, Coppard,

Gerrard Levy, Sheffield Insulations, Villavent,

Robbens, Howdens, The Build Centre and Mid-Sussex

Timber.

Thank you to all of you who have helped with this

project. It truly has been a Community event and

something Scandia-Hus are justifiably proud to have

been involved with.

That’s not the only involvement we have had in

the local community - we have decided to become

the official sponsor of the Lingfield Youth under 8

Football Team and look forward to supporting them

in their activities.

Caribbean chicken salad

What to do:1. Cook the rice in a saucepan of gently boiling water for

about 30 minutes, until tender. drain and rinse under cold

water to cool it quickly, then drain again.

2. Mix together the rice, pineapple, bananas, grapes,

sultanas or raisins and lemon juice.

3. In a large bowl, mix together the yoghurt and

mayonnaise. Add the rice mixture and chicken. Season

with pepper and mix well.

�. Arrange the lettuce on � serving plates and share the

chicken mixture between them. Serve at once.

Tip 1: Try to eat more brown rice! The outer part (the

bran) is a good source of fibre, the part of plant-based-

foods that your body doesn’t digest. A diet that’s high in

fibre may help to reduce cholesterol in the blood. It may

also lower your risk of stomach disorders. Higher fibre

foods are a good source of calcium, iron and B vitamins.

Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 20 mins. Cooking time: 30 mins

Local History NotesThe Rev Golding-Bird

St. Swithuns Church has had, as its vicar, two Golding-Birds. In 1908 the Very Reverend Cyril H. Golding-Bird was a locum for two years. He had been the dean of the Falkland Islands. Not much is known of him, but when his younger brother Rev dr Golding Golding-Bird arrived in East Grinstead in 1925, he made an immediate impact on the town and its inhabitants.

Eccentric in the extreme, memories of him were fresh in the minds of those who knew him, years later.

As a governor of Chequer Mead School he would appear suddenly in a classroom and fire off questions. He would then leave as abruptly as he had appeared, without waiting for the answers. one former pupil stated that if he had been asked to describe God, his reply would have been based on him. on encountering a parishioner carrying a warming pan Golding-Bird exclaimed; “I never knew you played an instrument!” He gabbled at such a rate, even when preaching his sermons, that it was almost impossible to understand him.

When he came to East Grintead in 1925, he noted that there were four large grappling irons stored in the church tower. They had been there for many years. used to tear thatch from burning buildings, they needed to be accessible at all times. The church was, therefore, an obvious place to store them. Although long since redundant they had remained in place, almost unnoticed. To Golding-Bird they were the inspiration to start a museum in the church tower. In the very first year he was in office he wrote in the Church magazine; “It is proposed to form a museum in the Tower Room and any gifts of historic interest will be welcomed.”

one month later he notes, “The museum in the Tower Room is going forward well. We hope to make an interesting announcement next month.”

However it was two months later, in March 192�, when the following notice was placed in the church porch:

Objects of interest in connection with the parish and pictures relating to the County of Sussex are exhibited in the Tower Room.

An inventory of the collection in the church tower, compiled by Miss Adeline Astbury in the 1970s, is in the possession of the museum. In the first year he had acquired twenty items, including the grappling irons and three wheels from the original fire engine which had also been kept in the tower previously. All of these items had been donated with the exception of a “leaden receptacle for pump water with a floral decoration of the eighteenth century”. The cost of this purchase was not noted.

By the time he retired as vicar the collection in the Tower Room had over three hundred items in it. Not all were relevant to East Grinstead or to the county of Sussex, as he had originally intended. one of the last things on the list were “Epaulettes of a Turkish captain from the surrender at Baghdad,1917.” The only rather tenuous local connection is that they were given by Sir George MacMunn, who was the Warden of Sackville College and was, presumably, the captor of the Turkish captain. He also donated an image of Gunpatti, the Hindu Elephant God; a carving from the ruins of a temple in northern India and a Tibetan prayer wheel. All these were presumably souvenirs from his army days. No connection of any kind can be attributed to the “Small box of jindai sugi. A rare kind of cryptomeria (type of conifer) from Hakone, Japan”, given by a Miss Mullett!

unfortunately, over the years many of the items have been lost. The notice from the ends of the box pews bearing the names Tablehirst and on the reverse, Hoskins Farm is not in the museum. These dated from the time when large houses and farms were allocated their own pews in the church. Also missing is a photograph of the interior of the church showing these still in situ. The museum would also like to have the Book of Common Prayer with its inscription; “Stillman Bostock, Vicar”.

However, the museum has on display the child’s leather shoe found in ��, High Street during building work. Shoes are often found in walls of old houses. They were supposed to bring good luck. Nutley History Society has an interesting collection of them. We also have a bundle of the quill pens from Thomas Palmer’s shop in Middle Row and a ticket from the Toll Gate which stood near Sackville College.

The idea of a museum in East Grinstead was first mooted by W.H.Hills in 190�, but nothing was done about it. The Rev Golding-Bird was, in a sense, the founder of our present museum. In the thirty years of his ministry here, he collected and curated the collection. He died the following year but his work was carried on by others, among them Miss Astbury. When, in 197�, the present museum was founded, it drew on a number of sources for its own collection, most notably, the Tower Room. East Grinstead has the Rev. dr. Golding-Bird to thank for preserving much of our history.

our wildlife is having a tough time in the wider-countryside, and while conservationists are working to address conflicts and issues on a landscape scale, we can all support their work by trying to improve our own green spaces for as many species as possible.

When it comes to gardening, everyone can do a little something for the wildlife that shares our gardens – and if everyone does their own little bit, then it really will make a big difference.

And gardening for wildlife is hugely enjoyable; there is something uplifting about having butterflies in your flowerbeds, frogs in your water feature and birds in your bushes – and knowing that they’re here because of you.

So where to start? Adrian Thomas, author of the RSPB’s ‘Gardening for Wildlife’ book, has the following top 3 tips:

Plants, Plants, Plants

Grow a wide variety of plants and you’ll offer food and shelter for all sorts of wildlife. The size of your garden will limit what you can plant, but it’s possible to provide something on even the smallest balcony or terrace.

Include a variety of plants: evergreens, fruit trees, colourful cottage garden plants, annuals and wildflowers to prolong flowering and fruiting times and give a year round food resource.

A well-managed area of trees, shrubs and flowering plants of different structures will support many kinds of wildlife. A range of different structures and ages have many benefits, such as somewhere for birds and insects to breed, feed and shelter.

Water

Almost any water body, whatever its size, will have some wildlife value, even if only as a drinking place for birds. However, this value – and the variety of creatures supported – can be greatly increased the bigger the water source.

Making a wildlife pond of some sort is probably the single most effective thing you can do to boost the biodiversity in your wildlife garden, and everyone’s got room to do something.

The larger you can make your mini-wetland home, the more life it is likely to host. But even if all you have room for is a pond in a pot, life will still find it, and there are workable options, too, for families with small children who need to think safety-first

Chemical-free pest control

Chemical control can often be harmful to the environment and other wildlife that may not be the problem species the chemicals are aimed at.

The key point to remember with pest control in gardens is that you are not trying to remove the pest completely but to protect your plants and crops from serious damage. Most creatures that we see as pests are seen by our garden favourites as food, so encouraging more diversity within the garden will prove beneficial.

Natural predation – By encouraging natural predators of any specific pest into the area, the pest in question will be controlled. Ladybirds, lacewings, frogs, hedgehogs and birds are all great at limiting numbers of garden pests such as aphids and SLuGS...

HAVING A BuRNS NIGHT?

Rabbie Burns, the bard of Scotland, is celebrated worldwide each January 25th on Burns Night. He wrote in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, making his works accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.

Among many traditional customs is the ‘Entrance of the haggis’. Everyone stands as the main course is brought in. This is always a haggis on a large dish while a piper plays bagpipes and leads the way to the host’s table, where the haggis is laid down. There, the address to a Haggis begins:

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, (sonsie = jolly/cheerful) Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race! Aboon them a’ ye tak your place, (aboon = above) Painch, tripe, or thairm: (painch = paunch/stomach, thairm = intestine) Weel are ye wordy o’ a grace As lang’s my arm.

Another custom is a ‘Toast to the Lassies’. This covers the male speaker’s view on women and is normally amusing - but not offensive! The men drink a toast to women’s health.

The final custom is that the host will call on one of the guests to give the vote of thanks, after which everyone is asked to stand, join hands, and sing Auld Lang Syne bringing the evening to an end.

So why not consider finding your nearest Burns Night and add another occasion to your yearly calendar to brighten the January blues…

HUGS East Grinstead Charity

With your help, local charity HuGS Christmas Appeal was able to donate five animal hampers to local animal sanctuaries, 80 individual hampers to the elderly and six large hampers to local residential homes. HuGS could not have done this without the kind donations received from the general public, a very kind individual anonymously donated over £100 of gifts! Special thanks have to go to all the staff and patients at the High Street dental Practice for their kind donations, and all the staff at The Caravan Club for their generosity.

Hugs donated Hampers to: The RSPCA at South Godstone, Last Chance Animal Rescue , Cats Protection League, the Raystede Centre, dogs Trust, Spring Copse Sheltered housing, Tower Court Sheltered Housing and dart Court.

HuGS also arranged for a Carol service and sing-a-long for the dart Court residents at their Christmas party before handing over the hampers.

To the right is a photo of HuGS Founder, Ellen, meeting her God-Mother whom she hasn’t seen in over 30 years... A very emotional reunion.

The EGBA in 2013The East Grinstead Business Association had a successful year in 2012 on a number of fronts including expanding its membership, however Stuart Scholes their Chief Executive is looking forward to an even better 2013. They are working closely with the EGTC, MSdC, the police and other bodies on a number of important projects, for example Young Enterprise. They expect to finally get “Brown Heritage” signs erected on the A22 (North & South), launch the appeal for and have erected the Sir Archibald McIndoe Memorial Statue and start a Co-operative business waste collection service for members; plus much more. In addition they will continue with their twice monthly network meetings and publish their online monthly newsletter.
