EAST HIGH SCHOOL – A SCHOOL WITH PURPOSE

We are looking forward to another outstanding school year at East High. As we begin a new year, it is always enjoyable to reflect on our experiences and look towards a bright future. One of the enduring strengths at EHS is our wonderful parent participation. We are especially fortunate to have an exceptional PTSA. Last year’s co-presidents, Julie Black and Diana Gessel spent countless hours planning and implementing outstanding activities. The PTSA sponsors this Communiqué as well as the Student Directories that are so helpful to all.

They provide meals for teachers and staff members during Parent/Teacher conferences, as well as lovely treats and benefits for teachers. The students appreciate the Freshmen Fair, the Leopard Boutique, and the Graduation Party. We extend our sincerest thanks to all of the hard working members of East’s PTSA and extend a warm welcome to the 2014-2015 Co-Presidents: Patty Christensen and Jane Barker.

There are some new folks around the building this year that you will want to meet: Sandy Bracamontes will be teaching Spanish 1, Spanish 4, and AP Spanish. Sandy received her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education form Arizona State University. She has been in education for three years, teaching at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Arizona. Sandy’s favorite aspect of teaching is helping to mold students into lifelong learners. “It is not what is poured t the students, but what is planted.” Kevin Waite joins our Counseling staff over students whose names begin with the letters I-M. Kevin received his Associates at BYU-Idaho, his Bachelor of Science at the Utah Valley University, and his Master of School Counseling at the University of Phoenix. Last year he was East High School’s counseling intern and assistant baseball coach. He is excited to return and to continue getting to know the students at East High School. Cristi Hebert will be teaching Journalism, and eXp (online) Language Arts. Cristi’s undergrad is in Editing and

Publishing from Emerson College in Boston, her graduate degree in Creative Writing from Antioch University in Los Angeles, and is currently working towards her PhD in Education. Cristi has worked for five years in East Los Angeles, four years in Kuwait, and two years in Japan. She likes to infuse her favorite motto into her classroom, “Think. Learn. Do.”. Cristi firmly believes in being a positive and active teacher. Sarah G. Herron is our new Library- Technology Teacher. Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts in Geology at Smith College, her Master of Education from University of Utah and has her Instructional Design and Educational Technology credential. She has been the Library Technology Teacher at Glendale Middle School and West High School. She has culminated 17 years of experience. The responsibilities of her job, literacy and technology, are a perfect match for her interests. She is extremely excited to be at East High School and meet all of the students. She would like everyone to feel welcomed and invited to come into the library. “High school students are the best!” Elizabeth Thackery will be teaching 9, 10 and 11 grade Language Arts and 10 Grade Honors

We are anticipating another great year at East, and are delighted to welcome these new members of the East High learning community; we encourage you to get to know them when you visit our campus.

Spirit Wear The PTSA has great, new Spirit Wear this year. Please see the flier at the end of this Communiqué for more information and pricing on the items available. The new items were a big hit at registration!

Leopard Loop The PTSA will be sponsoring a “Leopard Loop” during

lunches on September 23. Leopard Loop is an

opportunity for clubs and teams to have a table set up

during lunch to give other students information and an

opportunity to join. Advisors, please look for an email

for whom to contact to request a table. Parents, please

encourage your student to find a club or team to join.

Involvement in extracurricular clubs and teams gets

students excited to be at school and makes East a great

place to be!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EAGLE SCOUT STYLE

At East High we take our Emergency Preparedness very

seriously. We have at least 4 fire/evacuation drills per year,

one each quarter. We also have 2 Lockdown Drills and

an Earthquake Drill per year. Every morning the outside

doors are locked and the faculty and staff are trained to

politely inquire of every person in the building who is not

wearing a visitor’s pass, their business at East High.

This summer we were so excited that Scott Christensen and

James McDougall chose East as their Eagle Scout project!

Through their hard work and community effort, these two

sophomores equipped every classroom with Lock Down

buckets. All Classrooms now have two buckets: one filled

with water and hard candy, the other filled with the

necessities needed for an extended stay in a classroom

lockdown situation. We are very grateful to these two

young men who took it upon themselves to make East a

safer place for all our students and staff.

They have shown us the true Leopard spirit! Thanks Scott

and James.

AFTER-SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY AND NEW CREDIT

After school credit recovery and new credit will begin on Tuesday, September 2nd in room B-215. You MUST bring with you a referral from your counselor, and receipt from the treasurer. The fee is $15.00/qtr. credit for credit recovery, and $25.00/qtr. credit for new credit courses. New credit courses are: Financial Literacy, Health, Computer Tech., and P.E. WELCOME BACK TO THE WORLD OF COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS

East High School is excited to welcome back all students to share in an enriching college preparatory experience. East has implemented a school wide AVID program helping to ensure that all students are college and career ready. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID focuses on 5 main academic skills: writing, inquiry, reading, organization, and collaboration (WICOR). As a part of our school wide AVID focus, every 9th and 10th grade student at East High School will receive the tools needed to be successful in school: a binder, a pencil pouch, tab dividers, writing tools, Cornell note paper, and day planner. Organization is an important skill in school, career, and other aspects of daily life. The AVID

binder is an organizational tool to help students maintain notes, school work, and class materials. Students with their AVID binder will be prepared for every class. AVID binders are also an excellent resource for parents. Parents can easily access their student’s AVID binder and day planner to ensure all expected school work is complete. 9th and 10th grade students are expected to maintain a binder, which has been provided to them, along with all of the necessary items needed. Students are expected to keep it organized using the AVID methods they are taught. Divider tabs will be structured as MESSE (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and Electives). Students will be assessed on organization and preparation of all their materials. The binder will be evaluated weekly and taken as an assessment grade. Students should spend no more than 15 minutes each day organizing and completing their notes. It should be a red flag to parents if their student spends two or more hours the night before a binder check.

TIME TO PLAN AHEAD!

East High Sophomores will be taking the PLAN Test in two sessions. The Non-Cognitive portion will be administered through the Language Arts Classes, September 29 through October 2 and the Academic portion will be given on October 7 at 7:45-10:40am. Grades 9, 11 and 12 will start the school day at 11:00am. Taking PLAN® as a 10th grader is a great way to prepare for the ACT—and helps you get ready to succeed in college and beyond! PLAN includes four multiple-choice tests: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Your skills in these subjects will make a big difference—in school and, eventually, in your career. Once you know what each test covers, your PLAN test results can show you where you're strong or weak. Doing Your Best

• Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. • Follow directions exactly, and don't be afraid to ask questions. • Mark your answer folder carefully. Fill in the ovals neatly. • Don't spend too much time on any single question. For hard ones, choose the answer you think is best and move on. • Just like the ACT, there is no penalty for guessing. Be sure to answer every question

Hello! I am Sarah Herron and I am excited to be the new Library Technology Teacher here at East High. I have been a Library Technology Teacher in the Salt Lake School District for the past 9 years at both the middle school and high school levels and was an elementary computer lab supervisor for 8 years. I have a Masters of Education in Instructional Design and Educational Technology from the U. The responsibilities of my job, literacy and technology, are a perfect match for my interests and I am eager to empower our EHS students with the skills and knowledge to be college and career ready. The EHS Library is open to students before and after school and during lunches. You are welcome in the Library any time. Please feel free to contact me.

Picture Make-Up is September 15th. This is your last chance to get your mug shot in the yearbook. Students will be called out of class during the day to have missing pictures taken. Students wanting retakes can have them done before school, during lunch, or after school only. Be part of something bigger and get into the yearbook. WELCOME TO EAST HIGH AVID This year marks the 8th year of AVID at East High. What is AVID? ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION. What does that mean? It means that students are motivated and determined to realize their dream of being the first generation in their family history to attend and graduate from college. AVID is a four-year elective that assists students in organization, writing, critical thinking and research to better prepare them for the rigors of academic life after high school. According the National Government, “In school year 2011–12, some 3.1 million public high school students, or 81 percent, graduated on time with a regular diploma. Among all public high school students, Asians/Pacific Islanders had the highest graduation rate (93 percent), followed by Whites (85 percent), Hispanics (76 percent), and American Indians/Alaska Natives and Blacks (68 percent each)”.We have had 4 graduating classes of AVID at East and celebrate a 100% graduation rate – and a 100% acceptance to college rate! AVID works because the students learn how to work hard, advocate for themselves, and push themselves with rigorous courses. AVID works because we are a cohort of likeminded students – all of whom have the common goal: to change their life for the better by putting themselves in the position to attend and be successful in college. This year, East High will be working towards taking AVID strategies school wide with our school goal of becoming a National AVID Demonstration School. GERMAN The German Program is starting off the new school year with great news: 1. The German students are the best in the school and they are excited to learn German! :) 2. The German Exchange Program is happening this year again. We will welcome a group of 20 students from Trittau, Germany (close to Hamburg). They will be at East

High from September 27 until October 18, 2014. We are still looking for some host families. So, if you would like to have a German exchange student in your home for three weeks, please let us know!

3. On October 9, 2014, East High will host students from neighboring high schools and the University of Utah for a German Day (Deutscher Tag). The theme for this year's activity is fairy tales (Maerchen). The German Day will be held at various schools and universities simultaneously throughout Utah. We are excited to be part of it! YOUTHLINC OPPORTUNITIES Interested in international service? Find out about the Youthlinc Service Year Tuesday, Sept. 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the East High Library. More than 80 East H.S. students have participated in Youthlinc in the past five years, becoming relied upon volunteers in their own communities, and then traveling in the summer for two weeks to Kenya, Peru, Guatemala, Thailand, Cambodia – and next year Nepal. Youthlinc students plan their international service during monthly meetings starting in November. Deadline for application is October 8. SWIMMING AND DIVING IS GETTING STARTED!! Our first meeting is after school on Sept 4 for all interested students. Look for flyers in the halls. Our first event is our kick-off BBQ on Sept 11 for swimmers and parents. We will let you know what it means to be on the swim team, and what the requirements are. You will meet the coaches, captains, and other swimmers and parents. There will be gear order forms, and sizing kits to determine your suit size,

Our pre-season practices start Sept 8, with the official swim season beginning October 6th. We practice at the SL Sports Complex at 645 S Guardsman Way. All swimmers are welcome. No competitive experience is necessary.

EAST BOYS LACROSSE Fall practices have started for the lacrosse team. Anyone who is willing to work hard and wants to have some fun being on a team is welcome to join the team. Information is available at www.eastlacrosse.org. It looks like we will have about 25 new freshmen join the team - East is one of the fastest growing club teams in the state.

The team comes off its best season ever. They won their first playoff game against Logan 16-7. They then lost to the eventual champion Sky View in a very close game. The team had 10 players named all-state or all-conference and returns four players to receive honors: Kort Johnson, Jake Parkin, Tyson Holt, and Mikey Vetter. Watch for great results from the team again this year!

ATTENDANCE POLICY Objective: Providing extrinsic motivation to get students to class, on-time, prepared, and every period. Ultimately helping students develop their own intrinsic motivation to attend and participate at EAST!

Late: students are marked late (by their teacher) when they are not in class when the bell rings. Student must obtain a citation from a prevention specialist in the hall. Late students will bring receipt of citation to gain access to their class.

Tardy: students are marked tardy (by their teacher) when they are not in class for 15 minutes or longer. Student must find a prevention specialist and receive a tardy citation. The prevention specialist will determine if the student needs to bring tardy citation to class or speak with the Attendance Administrator.

ISS: Administrators are the only people that can refer students to In School Suspension (ISS). ISS does not give citations.

Students first 3 citations are free. After that, students must “work” them off, or pay $5. Students can work off detentions by the following: 1. After School Detention (students can sign in between 2:35-

2:45): a. Students that stay for 30 minutes will work off 1

detention. b. Students that stay for 60 minutes will work off 3

detentions. 2. After School Tutoring: 30 minutes = 2 detentions. 60

minutes = 4 detention. 3. Saturday School = 2 hours will work of 4 detentions or 1

No Grade 4. School Extracurricular Activities: In an effort to connect

students to East, we will offer to “work” off detentions if a student participates or attends a school function.

EAST HIGH DRESS CODE Students have the responsibility to dress appropriately so as not to disrupt the educational process or hinder fellow students’ participation in school. Dress should be modest, safe, and clean. Please consider the school dress code as you purchase clothing. Students who are unable to follow the following Dress Code may be required to purchase and wear a school provided shirt. 1. Spandex and tight fitting clothing are unacceptable. 2. All tops and/or pants must cover the navel and midsection. No midriff-baring shirts are allowed and pants/skirts must be worn at or above the hip bone whether sitting or standing. No “sagging”. Underwear must be covered at all times whether reaching or sitting. Fabric must be thick enough so as not to be “see-through”. 3. Shorts and skirts must come at least to mid-thigh. 4. All belts must have a plain buckle and be threaded through the loops. 5. Upon entry into school, students must immediately place outerwear (i.e. coats, parkas, etc.) in their locker or backpack unless directed otherwise by a teacher/staff member. Outerwear does not include fleece wear, sweatshirts, sweaters, and over shirts. 6. All shirts must have sleeves wide enough to go to outer edge of the shoulder and necklines must cover cleavage. No tank tops, muscle T’s, spaghetti straps, halters, etc. are allowed without a full shirt over or under it. 7. Items depicting vulgarity, profanity, harassment, suggestive or obscene slogans, violence, weapons, illegal or criminal activity, gang related items, or the promotion of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal substances such as drugs are not allowed. 8. No hats or head coverings are allowed within the classroom during school hours unless a religious or medical waiver has been received in writing. 9. Shoes or sandals must be worn at all times. Socks alone or bare feet are not allowed. 10. Students have the responsibility to cooperate fully with clothing standards required for special classes (shop, laboratories, P.E., etc.) and special school activities. PARKING Student parking is located east of 1300 East next to the tennis courts. A few short term parking spaces are available for visitors only in the East Circle. Hourly/long term visitor parking for adults is available in the west parking lot if you check into the main office upon arrival. No parking is allowed in the Red Zones or Handicapped Areas. Parking permits can be purchased for student parking in the treasurer’s office. Vehicles not displaying an East High Sticker or are parked illegally in the faculty or student parking lot may be ticketed by the Salt Lake Parking Authorities or by Campus Security. A fee of $15.00 will be required to pay the fine and get a sticker.
