COUNTY 4-H EXHIBIT FUN

Junk-in-A-Bucket Returns! Volunteers Steve Meek and Dean Applegate are busy salvag-ing junk for our Junk-in-a-Bucket program, again, this year. (BIG THANK YOU!)

Registrations are DUE April 2, if you wish to receive a bucket of junk to create with for this year’s East Pottawattamie County Fair. Registrations are needed by this date, so that our volunteers know how many buckets to fill.

4-Hers who register may come to the Extension Office, or send a representative, on April 16, 17, 18, or 19 to draw for a random bucket of junk.

The rules of junk in a bucket are simple. Create something with your junk! If you choose to weld, please enroll in me-chanics. If you will be designing and painting your creation, but someone will be welding for you, enroll in visual arts. You may use additional junk from home, but if you choose to

be eligible for our Peo-ple’s Choice award at the county fair, your junk should be primarily from the bucket you received.

Bring your creation to the fair with an appropriate write-up for your exhibit, and have it judged on July 18 with other static exhibits.

If any of you still have junk left over from last year, please consider returning it, so it can be redistributed to partici-pants this year. We would also appreciate the buckets being returned for additional years of use!

Fairgrounds Garden Plots Celebrate People’s Garden! Registrations for garden plots at our East Pottawattamie fair-grounds People’s Garden are due on April 2. Plans are for your 4’ x 8’ plot to be tilled and ready to be created and main-

tained by 4-Hers by workshop day! (We may create larger plots, this year, if requested.)

This is a fun team or club pro-ject, as well as an individual learning adventure. Write up your garden plot and have it

judged at the county fair on Wednesday with other static ex-hibits!

Being a part of the People’s Garden gives you the opportunity to share your harvest. Please try to donate part of your crop to support your local community: nursing home, fair food stand, and other opportunities.

Registrations must be received by April 2, so that enough spots will be tilled and available to our 4-Hers. Garden Plot assignments will be given at the April 11 Garden Workshop at the fairgrounds.

Get Dirty at April 11 Garden Workshop Ready to dig in the dirt, this spring? Bring your family, friends, or your 4-H club and learn some garden tips at a Garden Workshop on April 11 at 6:00pm.

The workshop will be held at the East Pottawattamie Fair-grounds at our 4-H People’s Garden plot site.

Canoyer Garden Center and East Pott. Soil & Water Con-servation will be hosting the workshop. Prepare to get dirty!

Lynette Gruchow will be explaining the fairground garden plots’ connection to the USDA People’s Garden.

Mark your calendar and enjoy some fresh spring air at the workshop. You may even win a prize . . . and get a little dirty.

COUNTY BENEFIT FOR STATE EVENT

Celebrate a Free Trip to State 4-H Conference

Every June, over 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. East Pottawattamie Extension and the 4-H Booster Fund will pick up the registration costs for TWO of our county 4-Hers to attend.

You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your commu-nity and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation

through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show!

If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! We'll also have a special track devoted to agronomy, called CSI: Crops. And, new this year, a track looking wilderness edu-cation and Shooting Sports.

There is no limit to the number of delegates that East Potta-wattamie can send, but we are glad to pick up the $140 regis-tration costs for two individuals. To apply for the conference scholarship, please fill out the form located on our county website: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/eastpottawattamie/kidsteens.htm. This application is due May 1. Registrations for the conference are due to our county Extension Office by May 1, as well. For conference registra-tions, workshop descriptions, and more information on the conference, please check out the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference webpage on our state 4-H website at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/StateConference/

All delegates should fill out the provided 4-H Conference Health Form this year. It collects information that is not in your 4-H On-Line Health Forms, such as insurance data, which may be needed for emergencies since we will not be in your local health care service area.

If you have completed 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th, 11th, or your senior year, you WANT TO DO THIS! Attend the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, June 26-28!

Junior Overnight Camp at the Zoo-REGISTER NOW! REGISTRATIONS ARE DUE APRIL 2 to camp with your 4-H friends at the zoo! Last year, our junior overnight campers had a great time at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo for our Jun-ior Overnight Camp. We will have a great time again, on May 5th! We will be spending the night in Go-rilla Valley, so our sea-soned zoo campers will be ready to show the way.

Our May 5 date allows for beautiful weather for our night hike! The kids will also enjoy a craft, game, and late night pizza!

Registrations are available to current 4th—6th grade youth. Encourage your friends who are NOT in 4-H to reg-ister, and attend with you!

Zoo campouts allow our youth to learn a lot about our zoo and the animals that live there. They offer night hikes and up-close-and personal visits with animals, as well as a great opportunity to make new 4-H friends from around the county.

The 4-H Booster Fund is utilized to make this camp afford-able for our 4-Hers.

Look for the registration form on our county website, at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/eastpottawattamie/kidsteens.htm. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS can accepted.

February Fair Board Minutes On 2/27/12 the East Pottawattamie County Fair Board met to discuss the 2012 fair. I am happy to say that we have some new adventures this year and I for one am really excited for them! The day for the demo derby has been changed due to con-flict issues. The derby will now be on Friday night of fair and will start at 7:30 so everyone will have time to get home and get to the fair! We have a new promoter for the demo derby. R & R Total Destruction Promotions will be running the derby for us. They run demos all over western Iowa, eastern Ne-braska, and part of Missouri. We are hoping to have more drivers because they have a “points” system for drivers who sign up. We have decided to be part of his system. This means the drivers will be out to win, and it promises to be an exciting evening. Payout will be larger, and we will have clas-ses for full size weld, and compact vehicles. The compact class is new for us and will include not only compact cars, but small trucks and minivans. These are ALL in the SAME CLASS! Dawn Harder talked about bringing in someone to have a rope making event for the kids at the fair. We are looking to do this on Thursday afternoon. Bud talked about what Alisha Gehrmann would like to do for the Fair Queen Competition. She would like the contest-ants to be able to get together more than one time, and raise money for scholarships. We can never have enough contest-ants, so please tell your friends. You do not need to be in 4-H or FFA to enter! Lisa Holtz brought up about renovating the dance hall and

making it just that once again. She has information from the state about historical preservation and is willing to do the research on costs. Once completed, the building would be open for parties, receptions, craft fairs, gun shows, etc. This was tabled for the next meeting due to the time getting late. Perry updated us on the Pioneer test plot. They are trying to get the mobile classroom for 1 day at the fair. Should be interesting! Lisa has started a Facebook page for the fair and will be writing newsletters to put in local papers and the 4-H news-letter every month. Please “Like” our Facebook page (search East Pottawattamie County Fair). We will be updating events, and during fair posting everything we can. We are also look-ing for pictures to put on there. They can be of past champi-ons, fun things, etc.. NEWSFLASH! There will not be bull riding this year on Thursday night. We have booked a up and coming country band from Oklahoma to play a concert that night! They are called 2 Steps Back, and I urge you to YouTube and Facebook them! They are not your traditional country band, and should rock the house! This is a new venture for us, and we need all the help we can to get the word spread on this. Check out their music please, I don’t think you will be disappointed! (Lisa Holtz)
