Orchestrating Student Success: Sound Practices to Reach All Learners—1

Welcome from Richland School District

On behalf of the Richland School District, welcome to Richland for the Eastern Washington Education Conference. Formerly the RTI-PLC Institute, this is the sixth year we have focused on providing outstanding professional learning to educators from around the state. This year’s theme, “Orchestrating Student Success: Sound Practices to Reach All Learners,” was selected to represent the needs of educators

as we continue our move to a new teacher and principal evaluation system, new educational standards and a new assessment system—all for the purpose of increasing student learning. It is great to have all of you here. We have two full days of keynote addresses and breakout sessions which will provide you with valuable training related to Assessment, Curriculum, Early Learning, Full Day Kindergarten, Instruction,

Special Programs, Technology, and TPEP. Giving the keynote addresses will be

Jeff Utecht and Pete Hall. Plus, you have your choice of over 100 breakout sessions led by local, state and national level educators. We are appreciative of the partnership we have with Washington State ASCD, as well as, the wonderful support we receive from our sponsors, presenters and exhibitors. Please enjoy this time to network and learn with some of the finest educators from across our state. Together we can celebrate, learn, lead and grow in an effort to reach each of our students. Again, welcome and thank you for your attendance at this conference!

Sincerely, Dr. Rick Schulte, Superintendent Richland School District

2 - Eastern Washington Education Conference

Welcome from Washington State ASCD

On behalf of the WSASCD Board of Directors, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Eastern Washington Education Conference. This year’s theme, “Orchestrating Student Success: Sound Practices to Reach All Learners,” engages participants in courageous conversations regarding the most effective practices to assure that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged in our educational settings. An extraordinary conference committee, with input from Washington State ASCD members and Richland School District staff, has developed a program that features highly regarded national and regional educators and leaders. Together, participants and presenters will come together to face the challenges that every day educators confront and forge relationships to discover inspiration from colleagues around the state. This event could not happen without colleagues from around our state valuing opportunities for educators from preschool through the university level to network and learn together. We are grateful for the incredible support we receive from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, our sponsors and exhibitors. Please enjoy this time to network and learn with some of the finest educators from across our state. Together we can celebrate, learn, lead and grow in an effort to reach each of our students. Again, welcome and thank you for your attendance at this conference! Janet Regge, Washington State ASCD President Instructional Facilitator Renton Public Schools

Preparing for Doc and Marty

On October 22 of this year, Doc and Marty from ‘Back to the

Future II’ will arrive. Much has changed since we were introduced

to Doc and Marty in 1985, including the tools that are available to

teachers. However, it is not just our schools that are changing, it

is society as a whole. A new learning landscape is emerging. A

landscape of just in time global education. What does this mean for our schools, our

students and communities? As we prepare for Doc and Marty's arrival, we take a

look at the technologies that are changing the learning landscape as we know it.

About Mr. Utecht

Jeff Utecht is an educational technology consultant, educator and author. He holds a Master’s

degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Technology, as well as, his administrative

certification through Washington State. Jeff began his career in the Elementary Classroom at a

public school in Washington State. In 2001, he was the recipient of a Bill and Melinda Gates

Grant called the Technology Leadership Program.

Jeff has taught at International Schools in the Middle East and Asia. Moving from a classroom

teacher into technology facilitator roles and administrative positions, Jeff began sharing his

passion for learning via his blog, The Thinking Stick in 2005. In 2007, he was invited to create an

innovative conference focusing on learning and technology; thus, the Learning 2.0 Conference

was initiated. Jeff authored chapters in numerous books, worked as the educational consultant

for a wiki company, and began speaking at schools and educational events around the globe. He

has worked with politicians in Washington DC and participated in The Educational Project at the

invitation of the Prince of Bahrain. In 2010, Jeff was invited to present at the first TEDx

conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

Jeff has started numerous businesses aimed at helping educators teach in a new connected

world. Jeff co-founded the Certificate Of Educational Technology and the Information Literacy

Program (coetail.com) in 2010. In 2014, he helped found Eduro Learning Inc.

(edurolearning.com) a professional development consulting and online course company. Also in

2014, Jeff helped to establish the Learning2Conference as a non-profit company bringing this

innovative conference to the world.

searching it. Search is the skill of our era, a life skill that once mas-

tered opens up all sorts of opportunities. Do we teach search in your

classrooms and schools? This session will focus on the skills and

Target Level: Upper Elementary (3-5); Middle School; High School Strand: Technology

New web tools have changed the way we interact with the web. In an

old web world, we used the Internet to gather information, to find

answers, and absorb information. There was not an easy way for the

average person to contribute to this landscape of knowledge. As the

21st century is upon us, so is a new web. The new web otherwise

known as the read/write web allows us not only to easily find

information, but allows us to be creators and contributors to this new

wealth of knowledge. While education has been slow to adapt to

these new tools, our students have taken them to heart and are using

them to create content viewed the world over. Sites such as

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, and others allow our

students to create information. Our students no longer want to sit in a

classroom and be told information. They want to create it, share it,

and contribute to the growing knowledge base on the web.

Every Bird Can Sing!

Blending a sense of humor with a sense of professional

obligation, Pete Hall shares the true rags-to-riches story of

principal in Reno, Nevada. Anderson, once the only school in

Nevada to fail to make AYP for four consecutive years,

transformed into the only Title I school in the state to earn a High Achieving

designation under Pete’s leadership. How did they do it? What were the keys to

success? Which of his experiences are replicable and meaningful for today’s

school leaders? Here the answers to these and more, as Pete tells tales from the

trenches and inspires participants to go forth with a renewed sense of hope and

enthusiasm for the challenges ahead!

Presenters: Dr. Kate Kinsella, Professor, San Francisco University

Audience: Classroom Teachers; Instructional Coaches/Mentors; Teacher Leaders

Target Level: Upper Elementary (3-5) Strand: Instruction

The 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

Vocabulary Report highlighted the dire need for schools to provide

elementary school English learners and youths from low-income

families with informed, consistent vocabulary instruction aligned with

critical Common Core academic competencies such as comparing,

making inferences, and describing causes and effects. Productive

word knowledge, the ability to effectively use a word in speech and

writing, is pivotal to academic interaction, presentation, and text

dependent response. Drawing on scholarship and extensive

classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella demonstrates explicit instruction

of high-utility, competency-aligned word families (e.g., compare,

comparison; infer. inference) underscoring skillful competent

academic communication and explains how to design application

tasks and formative assessments that deepen productive word

knowledge. Participants observe video footage and review sample

lessons, note-taking guide formats, and competency aligned word

lists to establish a program-wide high-utility vocabulary initiative.

competency-aligned word families (e.g., compare, comparison; infer,

inference) underscoring skillul competent academic communication

and explains how to design application tasks and formative assess-

access the texts. Participants of this presentation will have the

opportunity to engage in several focused activities to better

understand what students need to know and be able to do to

demonstrate mastery of the standards. Through this exploration,

teachers will also understand how classroom instruction can support

student learning.
