Do Now #1Write the sentence and choose the correct word.

1. There is a beautiful moon out tonight, and Estelle and I are going for a stroll. Would you like to come along with (she and I OR her and me)?

2. Your friend doesn’t believe that you are older than (I or me). 3. Maybe we are not as cool as (they OR them), but I bet we are

a lot happier.

Page 3: Easy Grammar

Do Now #1 Explanation and Answers1. Her and me2. I 3. They • In number 1 the word “me” ends the sentence and is part of the

predicate. • I number 2 and 3, there is an implied verb that follows the word – I

“am” and They “are”. This means that this word is also the subject of the sentence. “Me” and “them” can only be used as a predicate.

Do Now #2Write the sentence and choose the correct word.

1. Does your child still (lie OR lay) down for a nap after school? 2. When we saw Sara openly flirting with Kayla’s boyfriend, we

(could OR couldn’t) hardly believe our eyes! 3. You should (of OR have) brought your markers to class today.

Page 5: Easy Grammar

Do Now #2 Answers and Explanations

1. Lie – people “lie” down; only objects “lay”2. Could – “couldn’t hardly” would be a double negative and

mean the opposite of the intended meaning. 3. Have – the word should requires a verb to follow it; “of” is a

prepositional phrase. It may sound like could of when you say it, but that is only because you are speaking the contraction form: “could’ve”

Do Now #3Write the sentence and choose the correct word.

1. I have to spend Sunday with all my (sister-in-laws OR sisters-in-law).

2. What kind (of OR of a) dress are you looking for today? 3. Maria was excited that Estrella invited Kiara and (her OR she)

to the party.

Page 7: Easy Grammar

Do Now #3: Answers and Explanations1. sisters-in-law: there are multiple sisters not multiple laws.

“in-law” just describes the type of sisters. 2. Of – “a” implies that only one dress exists when in fact many

dresses exist. For this reason “a” is not necessary. 3. Her – “her” is in the predicate of the sentence. It could have

also said: She and Maria were excited to be invited to Estrella’s party. In this sentence “she” is in the subject.
