One goal:

customer benefit

Editorial

Strong technological knowledge has been the key to the success of Eaton’s UPS business since the company received its first patent in 1962. Employing the latest technologies is, however, a means rather than an end: the ultimate goal of any innovation is to serve customers’ needs. Eaton’s products com-bine maximum reliability, high efficiency and energy savings to deliver the best solutions for our customers’ businesses. We also welcome the rapidly increasing demand for environmentally friendly products, as sustainability has always been a fundamental part of our way of doing business: we want to de-velop technologies that help customers’ business while minimising the envi-ronmental impact of our products. Our achievements have been recognised by the Ethisphere Institute, which has chosen Eaton as one of the most ethi-cal companies in the world for three years running, in 2007, 2008 and 2009. To find out more about how Eaton’s technologies benefit our customers, turn to pages 6–9.

In order to serve our customers in the best possible way, cooperation with our channel partners is crucial. The two stories in this issue of Power-News, from Portugal and Denmark, showcase the excellent teamwork taking place between Eaton and its channel partners.

Successful teamwork requires that our partners know our products in-side out and are able to choose the best solutions for their customers. One way to achieve this is Eaton’s renewed and enhanced reseller programme, which now includes a wider variety of products than ever before – under one Eaton brand. This new programme is an opportunity to fine-tune teamwork and further upgrade resellers’ customer service through training, marketing tools and promotions. All our partners are welcome to participate in and ben-efit from the new programme. Read more on pages 4–5!

We hope you find this issue of PowerNews as enjoyable and informa-tive as ever,

e recognise that our success is strongly linked to the success of our partners. Therefore, most of our

marketing activities are focused on support-ing and developing our partners’ business-es,” says Bruno Moureau, Channel Market-ing Manager, Eaton Power Quality, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

“Previously, Eaton had different chan-nel programmes launched by Powerware and MGE Office Protection Systems. Now that we are all Eaton, we are combining our strengths to power our partners’ businesses in an even more effective way under one programme: Eaton PowerAdvantage. In a nutshell, the pro-gramme delivers exceptional channel partner experience and helps partners grow and dif-ferentiate their business with Eaton.”

The partner programme is targeted at all IT re-sellers and value-added resellers. Depending on the country, the programme is also open to electrical contractors.

The PowerAdvantage Partner Pro-gramme aims to strengthen the link be-tween Eaton and resellers; however, Eaton is not looking to sell to resellers directly. Rather, the intention of the programme is to develop and support business between resellers and distributors.

“At Eaton we believe that everyone – Eaton, its channel partners and end-cus-tomers – will gain from the new partner pro-gramme. It offers resellers tangible advan-tages including margin benefits, business development opportunities and marketing and sales support. This helps resellers to both increase their sales and deliver end-customers the best service and support with Eaton,” Moureau says.

As a part of PowerAdvantage’s stan-dard benefits, resellers will have access to Eaton’s marketing materials and sales tools, channel marketing tools, non-public product literature, as well as sales and product train-ing organised by Eaton personnel. The pro-gramme’s dedicated extranet site will also keep resellers informed on topical channel news such as information about promotions and events.

Across EMEA, the programme consists of two partner levels: Authorised and Premi-um. The specific benefits and requirements for joining the programme are defined at the country level in order to achieve the greatest impact locally.

“There are very limited requirements for joining the programme as an Authorised reseller. The participant must, of course,

an:office and Eaton Power Quality have signed a framework agreement for delivering 30,000 Eaton 5115 UPS units, part of the Powerware series, to the United Nations over a three-year period. The contract was signed in April 2008 and the first delivery took place in July 2008. These Eaton UPSs will

ensure power quality and continuity at the UN’s offices around the world. The Eaton 5115 matches the UN’s needs perfectly: It weighs just 13 kilograms

– five kilograms less than the competing UPS which the UN had previously been us-ing. This is important because the UPSs are usually shipped by airfreight to different locations around the world, and the more compact size leads to significant cost sav-ings for the UN.

Danish company Dan:office is one of the leading suppliers of IT, information systems and communication equipment to the UN around the world. Excellent service is one of the major reasons for the long-term partnership.

“Before a shipment to a United Nations office, we unpack, test and label every UPS. Understanding our customers’ needs and delivering the right products, services and support where and when they are needed is a great added value,” says Per E. E. Svehag, CEO of Dan:office.

“This philosophy is in line with the way Eaton Power Quality operates: We can rely on Eaton’s ability to offer service and support even within a short time frame. Fur-thermore, the United Nations appreciates ethical values and behaviour from its suppliers. Thus Eaton is a perfect match.”

“In addition, Authorised partners who have participated in the programme for more than six months or have achieved sig-nificant business goals with Eaton can be-come Premium resellers. This means they can enjoy additional benefits, such as par-ticipation in special events and additional support with their marketing activities. The level upgrade is agreed with the local sales representative.”

Eaton PowerAdvantage was launched in the United States in March 2009, and the pro-gramme has already been a big hit with re-sellers.

“Less than a month following the launch, we had more than doubled the number of PowerAdvantage registered value-added re-sellers in the US. Eaton’s US team has re-ceived very positive feedback from the resell-er community, especially about the simplicity of the programme and its rewards,” Moureau says.

“In EMEA, the programme is adjusted country by country to match to our custom-ers’ and partners’ specific local needs. Our teams in the countries will be in charge of the local launch and communications. The programme’s best practices will be shared globally so that it becomes an exceptional tool for powering resellers’ business with Ea-ton,” concludes Moureau.

technology

although it is at the heart of Eaton’s operations, technology is still merely a means to an end – its usefulness is measured by the benefits it brings for the customer. in today’s environment, businesses are constantly looking for ways to save energy and operating costs. Eaton aims to help them do this by developing power management solutions that utilise innovative new technology. let’s take a look at some of these innovations.

The key feature of a UPS is its ability to sup-ply uninterrupted, high quality power to criti-cal loads at all times and in all circumstanc-es. Eaton’s solution for absolute reliability is the patented Hot Sync® parallel load-sharing technology. It guarantees maximum system availability by eliminating the risk of a single point of failure that is inherent in traditional parallel UPS systems sharing the load with the master-slave principle.

Hot Sync is based on a parallel configu-ration in which two or more units share the same load. If one unit fails, the other units take over its tasks, isolate the damaged unit and continue to supply electricity without in-terruption. Hot Sync is unique because it en-ables the UPS units to operate completely independently; no communication wiring be-tween units is required to transmit system-

power availability with various power supply configurations. hot Sync-equipped systems are capable of paralleling for both redundancy and capacity.

level information for output phase adjusting.“To operate in parallel and achieve bal-

anced load share, the outputs of the UPS modules must be in exactly the same phase angle. Any difference in the phase angle causes a difference in voltage between the modules. This is why phase synchronisation is crucial,” clarifies Elina Hermunen, Product Manager at Eaton Power Quality.

Hot Sync’s secret is the patented built-in digital signal processor (DSP) that continu-ously monitors UPS power module outputs and drives them towards synchronisation, fully independently of each other.

“Hot Sync completely eliminates the common single point of failure as the UPS’s modules operate in parallel without inter-module communication. This provides the highest reliability for the load,” Hermunen continues.

Hot Sync is available for both single- and three-phase products from 8 kVA up to 1100 kVA. In addition to parallel N+1 redundancy, the technology can be used to increase sys-tem capacity.

The battery is the heart of the UPS; its ser-vice ability is critical for UPS operation and reliability. Though the battery may rarely be used, it must be fully operational when need-ed. Performance, however, decreases over time since batteries are electro-chemical de-vices. A worn battery may cause an unex-pected loss of load.

With most UPSs, batteries are trickle-charged continuously. This reduces battery service life considerably – by as much as 50 percent – since batteries are constantly sub-ject to drying and electrode corrosion. Ea-ton’s ABM® technology extends the overall battery life by optimising battery recharge time so that batteries are charged only when necessary. ABM first fully charges the batter-ies and then leaves them standby for the rest of the time. During this resting period, the battery condition and charge level are con-stantly monitored. Charge current is then ap-plied at certain intervals.

What is more, the technology provides notice of the approaching end of useful bat-tery service life as early as 60 days in ad-vance. This gives the user plenty of time to organise a replacement battery. ABM also performs automatic and periodic self tests on the battery circuitry.

ABM technology is available for UPSs up to 1100 kVA.

Testing UPS performance at full power levels usually requires dummy loads on installation sites. With Easy Capacity Test, Eaton’s UPSs are able to test their entire power train under a full load stress without an external load be-ing connected.

By using the UPS’s rectifiers and invert-ers as internal load banks, the Easy Capac-ity Test performs a full load test of all of the UPS’s power-handling components. Thus,

Eaton’s Energy Saver System, or ESS, allows the UPS to safely provide mains current di-rectly to a load when the input is within the acceptable voltage and frequency limits. If the limits are exceeded resulting in poor pow-er quality, the UPS switches over to double conversion or battery backup with no interrup-tion. The technology enables UPS efficiency to reach an impressive 99 percent.

“The efficiency improvement Energy Saver System brings is dramatic: at lighter loads the improvement is as high as 15 per-centage units and at the upper load range as much as 5 percentage units. This brings significant energy cost savings,” Elina Her-munen says.

ESS allows the UPS to switch between three configurable operating modes. In the standard double conversion mode the UPS operates as normal, supplying power through the power converters. In the ESS mode the power converters are idle and the static by-pass switch allows the UPS to supply mains power directly. If mains power is lost or ex-ceeds preset output limits, the DC link that is kept active enables a seamless switcho-ver to double conversion in less than two milliseconds. The third mode is a high-alert

mode, in which the UPS switches from the ESS mode to double conversion for one hour. Power quality is constantly controlled during this time. If a high-alert command is received again, for example due to a thunderstorm, the one-hour timer will be reset.

While in ESS, the UPS is also able to de-tect whether an output fault has been caused by a source or by a load. A fault at the bypass source results in immediate switchover to the

inverter; a fault in the load keeps the UPS in the ESS mode.

“Energy Saver System is perfect for en-vironments in which the mains current is of good quality and the load is not overly sen-sitive to power fluctuations,” concludes Her-munen.

The Eaton 9395 and 9390 specific Ener-gy Saver System is applicable to both single and parallel UPS configurations.

Energy Saver System delivers 99% efficiency

the upS seamlessly transitions through different operating modes when needed.

Easy Capacity Test reduces testing costs – and saves time

there is no need to rent load banks or make temporary load connections, which saves both time and money. Because the UPS cir-culates power through itself and draws on-ly minimal power from the mains source – 5 percent – the energy consumption of the UPS testing is significantly reduced.

The Easy Capacity Test is a standard fea-ture of the Eaton 9395 and Eaton 9390.

otto asunmaa (left) and Elina hermunen (right) are at the front line of developing state-of-the-art technologies. “Eaton’s prime interest is to find solutions that help our customers to both save costs and act according to sustainable growth,” says otto asunmaa.

UPS systems are rarely loaded at full capac-ity; lighter loads are the rule rather than the exception. At loads less than 40 percent of the full load rating, UPS efficiency decreases, thus increasing the system’s overall energy consumption. The solution is Eaton’s Adaptive Capacity System (ACS) technology, which al-lows the UPS to achieve higher efficiency for lighter loads.

With ACS, the UPS can decide which of the UPMs, or Uninterruptible Power Mod-ules, are in idle mode. This way, the remain-ing power modules drive the load with higher efficiency. When the load increases again and more power modules are needed, the system shifts the load into additional modules imme-diately – in less than two milliseconds. ACS also allows the UPS system to be configured so that there is, for example, one module al-ways prepared for redundancy. In this case, the additional modules are idle only when the load is less than N-1 in an N+1 configured par-allel system.

“ACS is something completely new in the larger systems market,” says Otto Asun-maa, Head of Three-Phase UPS R&D at Ea-ton Power Quality, EMEA. “The improvement in the overall double conversion efficiency by several percentage units at lighter loads

meets today’s energy efficiency requirements perfectly.”

Here is how ACS works: When a power module is in idle mode, the module will stop gating the inverter and rectifier but keep the DC link active. In case of a load step, the tech-nology allows immediate return to active dou-ble conversion mode.

“ACS is especially useful in situations in which the load has not yet reached its maxi-

mum level, for example when the system is not fully set up. It is also useful when the load varies, for instance between weekdays and weekends,” Asunmaa says.

ACS adapts both to a single UPS con-sisting of multiple power modules and mul-tiple UPS parallel systems. The Eaton 9395 specific feature will be launched in the third quarter of 2009.

Adaptive Capacity System optimises double conversion efficiency

Success stories

ritish communications company BT is one of the world’s leading provid-ers of communications solutions and

services. Its principal activities include net-worked IT services, local, national and inter-national telecommunications services as well as higher-value broadband and internet prod-ucts and services.

BT has a major role as the hub of all communications in the UK. The compa-ny cannot afford to have a no-power situa-tion that results in failing services and dis-appointed, unsatisfied customers. To en-sure that services stay up and running, BT chose Eaton to provide the UPSs for their Point of Presence (PoP) site in Manchester. The PoP site is packed with communication interface equipment for BT’s internet, phone and broadcast services. It also provides third party companies such as Virgin and The Car-

Eaton and BT have had a solid relationship for over 10 years. The service level and profes-sionalism of the company, combined with its ability to provide full turnkey solutions, made it an easy decision for BT to choose Eaton as the solution provider.

“We wanted a turnkey solution on this occasion and, therefore, it was vital to have a solid and trusted partner. We chose Ea-ton because they could provide us with the whole solution and we have had a long and solid relationship with them,” recalls Mike Keeble, Senior IP Accommodation Manag-er at BT.

few years ago, the Government of Portugal established a Technological Education Plan, the main objective of

which is to make Portugal one of the five most advanced European countries regarding the technological modernisation of schools by 2010. The project involves schools from the fifth grade up to the twelfth grade – prepara-tory, junior high and high schools – and pro-motes integration of communication and in-formation technologies in both teaching and learning processes as well as in school man-agement.

With this goal in mind, Portugal’s Min-istry of Education launched a public contest in January 2008 to select a partner to imple-ment local area networks in the 1,220 pub-lic schools covered by the modernisation project. The successful partner needed to be able to supply active components for Ether-net and Wi-Fi networks as well as implement and install a structured cabling system, in-cluding wiring, backstage, technical rails and UPSs, among other things. The partner cho-sen by the ministry was Portugal Telecom, which for its part owed its success to several partner companies – one of which was Pahl-Data in collaboration with Eaton.

“Eaton managed to respond exactly to Por-tugal Telecom’s specifications, which carried strict technical and logistical regulations for UPS systems. One of the added values Ea-ton brought as a partner in this project was their profound commitment, which was an

extremely important contributing factor in the specification of the system installation. Eaton also supplied all the required technical information as well as the test equipment to be installed in pilot schools,” says PahlData’s Commercial Director, Leopoldo Gonçalves.

“In addition to their good price/quali-ty ratio, Eaton was also able to provide UP-Ss within the tight time schedule proposed for system implementation. Logistically, the challenge was to provide all equipment with-in three months, which they successfully achieved.”

morE than 5,000 Eaton Evolution upSs

PahlData and Eaton chose to supply a mix of Eaton Evolution 1150 VA, Eaton Evolution S 1750 VA and Eaton Evolution 2000 VA de-vices, as they offer the perfect solution for protecting schools’ network devices, rack-optimised servers, storage systems and in-ternetworking equipment. With their line-in-teractive technology and range of mounting options, Eaton Evolution UPSs provide the maximum availability and flexibility required by the schools. The individually controlled out-put sockets enable load-shedding to maxim-ise the backup time, and the UPSs also en-able remote reboot and sequential start-up.

Last year over a tenth of the 1,220 pub-lic schools were already power-protected. The project will be completed during 2009. Even-tually, more than 5,000 UPSs will be installed in the schools around Portugal, protecting the Ethernet and Wi-Fi networks, as well as other electrical equip-ment, from damaging and costly power dis-ruptions.

Eaton and pahlData deliver more than 5,000 Eaton Evolution upSs to portugal’s public schools as part of a technological modernisation plan.

In total, BT has about a dozen simi-lar PoP sites. The Manchester PoP, which has been operating since the 1930s, is one of the most important in the UK.

“The importance of the one-stop-shop that Eaton provides cannot be stressed enough,” Keeble explains.

long rElationShip rESultS in turnkEy ContraCt

Eaton has executed close to 7,500 im-plementations at various BT locations around the UK in the last ten to twelve years. In ten cases, the UPS usage has been similar to the Manchester site – to support critical communications equip-ment. In Manchester, however, the dif-ference was in the project scope.

As part of the comprehensive con-tract, Eaton provided not only the equip-ment, management and installations, but was also responsible for the interi-ors as a whole, including elements such as flooring, alarms and air conditioning.

“This time, Eaton was the main contractor and did most of the work at the site. We delivered two 120 kVA Ea-ton 9390 UPS systems, offloaded and positioned all the units and also carried out the electrical installations and site testing. We delivered a complete turn-key solution,” says Graham Kempster, account manager responsible for the de-sign and commercial side of the project at Eaton.

The project took five months on site from start to finish. The turnkey so-lution proved to be a challenge as well as a valuable experience. “We will be implementing another similar project this year,” reveals Kempster.

“Everyone is delighted how the project turned out. It could not have gone better. The cooperation was very easy, but most importantly our custom-ers and third party partners are extreme-ly pleased,” Mike Keeble concludes.

Delivering power protection for more than 1,000 Portuguese schools

“Eaton’s ability to provide a complete turnkey solution was the deciding factor,” says mike keeble.

To begin with, please tell us about your career.

I joined Eaton in 1994 with the acqui-sition of Westinghouse, where I worked for ten years. At Eaton, I have held leadership positions in sales, marketing and operations, most recently as Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing in Eaton’s electri-cal business segment. I am now responsible for all of the company’s electrical business in the EMEA region.

How do you see the outlook for the electrical

market in EMEA?

We live in a world with increasing de-mand for highly available and efficient electri-cal power. One example is data centres – ac-cording to Uptime Institute, 42% of IT man-agers say their data centres will run out of capacity in the next 12–24 months. There is no end in sight for this trend, thus bringing tremendous opportunities for Eaton and its partners.

How is Eaton positioned in this market?

We have become a key global player, especially with the recent strategic acquisi-tions that widened our manufacturing foot-print in Europe. The successful integrations of The Moeller Group and MGE Office Pro-tection Systems make Eaton a global lead-er in power distribution equipment and the world’s second-largest supplier of UPSs. With our new regionalisation strategy, we are lay-ing the foundations for tackling the EMEA re-gion as a core market.

What benefits does the new organisation bring

to Eaton’s customers and partners?

With the Electrical Sector now divided into Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific, major

decisions will be made in the respective re-gions. This allows us to be closer to our mar-kets, act more quickly and autonomously in a local sense and, eventually, help customers and partners to grow their businesses more efficiently.

What products and services does Eaton offer

for the electrical market?

Industry-leading power quality, power distribution, control and industrial automa-tion products and services. Our broad port-folio serves the power system needs of data centres as well as industrial, institutional, gov-ernment, utility, commercial, residential and OEM markets worldwide.

How is Eaton’s one-brand strategy reflected in

the electrical business?

We have now incorporated the expertise of some of the market’s most respected play-ers and are able to deliver a comprehensive product selection from a single source: Eaton. We still have a variety of important proprie-tary brands that we use commercially. When relevant, we gradually transition them under the Eaton brand, as we recently did with Pow-erware and MGE Office Protection Systems.

What further developments are on the horizon

for Eaton’s electrical business in EMEA?

We live in a power-hungry society. The largest greenhouse gas generators are not cars and trucks – it is the creation and dis-tribution of electrical power. To comply with the ever-increasing demand for highly efficient and reliable power, Eaton will remain focused on delivering innovative solutions that help its customers to manage power more effectively and safely.

Eaton reorganised its worldwide structure to better power its customers’ businesses. as part of the reorganisation, frank Campbell took up his new position as president of Eaton’s Electrical Sector in Europe, the middle East and africa (EmEa) in february this year.
