Saturday is National Honey Bee Day! Always celebrated on the third Saturday in August.

Let's celebrate and show our appreciation for the hard work-ing Honey Bee, who works so hard to produce the liquid sug-ary treat, that is loved so much

by bees and humans.

Speaking of hard working, did you know that many bees have to travel 55,000 miles to pro-duce just one pound of honey? To get that pound of honey, those bees need to gather nectar from two million flowers. A single bee will gather just a1/2 teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. After all of this hard work, honey bees deserve this special day of recognition.

This day was first established in 2009 for bee-keepers, as a way to promote honey and to encourage educational programs. But, this is too special a day to limit to the beekeepers. We appreciate hard working honey bees, too. After all, they produce honey that we enjoy, and they are vital to the pollination of a wide array of our fruits and vegetables. Now, that's certainly something to appreciate! By Holiday Insights

Scheduling 102 Market Demand Drives Schedules

As much as we would like to say a schedule is set in stone, we know any number of fac-tors can affect production.Supplier disruptions, weather and changes in market de-mand are common factors.

The Detroit Free Press recently published an article that accurately captures the purpose and intent of market-driven down weeks. The newspaper noted: “GM is cutting production in Canada and Mexico where it builds the Equinox SUV in antici-pation of slowing sales in North America and other markets.” Whether it is taking off a shift at San Luis Potosi in Mexico or scheduling a down week at CAMI in Ontario, we make decisions based on running the business in a responsible manner, namely ensuring we do not have too much inventory in the dealer network.

On the flip side, when we launch a new vehicle - like the heavy duty pickups at Flint Assembly - it’s literally “pedal to the metal” to increase inventory and meet high demand.

Product allocation and scheduling decisions are not made lightly. We know they affect all employ-ees, contract workers, suppliers and dealers. In the end, they are made because they ultimately al-low us to keep our customers at the center of ev-erything we do.By Mike Trevorrow, Manufacturing Executive Director

50-STATE SOLUTION NEEDED FOR ELECTRIFICATION

The most effective way to move the U.S. to a leader-ship position in electrification is through a single, 50-state solution. That’s why General Motors called for a National Zero Emission Vehicle (NZEV) program based on existing ZEV programs that would establish requirements for automakers to incorporate ZEVs as an increasing part of their portfolios, up to 25 percent by 2030. It would also establish a Zero Emissions Task Force to promote

complementary policies, such as charging infrastruc-ture investments, renewed federal incentives for EV purchasing and regulatory incentives to support U.S. battery suppliers. This program could place more than 7 million long-range EVs on the road by 2030, while reducing CO2 emissions by 375 million tons between 2021 and 2030. It would also encourage American innovation and pre-serve our industrial strength while making EVs more affordable. Source: General Motors 2018 Sustainability Report
