Devon Fuller says, “I was one of the 13 Eaton Rapids MiddleSchool seventh graders (now in eighth grade) that went toSpace Camp. We all went to Huntsville, Ala. Space Campwas at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. We did severalsimulators such as the MAT or Multi-Axis Trainer. This simulatorspins you on three axes. We did a robotics course. In robotics,we designed, built, and programmed robots to go againsteach other in a competition. In another activity, we were allassigned positions as if we were going on a mission. Wewere assigned jobs in the Space Shuttle, Mission Control,or the International Space Station. Then, we went through asimulated mission in our positions, which I thought was one ofthe most fun things we did at Space Camp. We learned a lotabout the space race and even our space program. I enjoyedthe trip a lot and think if you have the chance to go to SpaceCamp, take it!”

Editor’s note: The EatonRapids Community News isrerunning the below article, which appeared in the Nov.28th edition. The graph wasnot large enough to read. Weapoligize for the oversight.

EATON CO — Propertytax rates, like almost every-thing else in real estate, varywith location, location, loca-tion.

In Eaton County, the high-est property tax rate is morethan double the lowest.

To a large extent, thedifferences reflect the levelof government services, andmany of the taxes were es-tablished by citizens votingto tax themselves. Opinionsvary as to whether taxpay-ers get fair value for theirtaxes.

“I think there are 8,000opinions in the city, but mostof the people I have workedwith are pretty satisfied,”said Grand Ledge Mayor Kal-min Smith.

“And people who arepretty well informed areaware of the extra servicesthey receive, such as leafpickup,” he said.

“Many people are appre-ciative of that. These arethings that add to the qualityof life.”

Grand Ledge residentspay the second lowest citytax rate in the county, buttaxes levied by other juris-dictions add to their taxbills.

The highest property tax-es in Eaton County is inthe part of the City of Lan-sing which is within the HoltSchool District, based on thecombination of the highestcity taxes in the area and thehighest school taxes in thecounty.

The owner of a hypothet-ical house with a market val-ue of $150,000 located therewould pay more than $4,500on a tax levy of more than60 mills.

The owner of a similarlyvalued house in KalamoTownship, west of Charlotte, and in the Maple ValleySchool District would payapproximately $2,000 on acombined tax levy of 27

mills, the lowest in EatonCounty.

A tax levy of one milltranslates into one dollar oftax for each $1,000 of tax-able value.

Taxable value is normal-ly set at one half of the mar-ket value of a property.

Property taxes are leviedby governments at all levels, for a variety of purposes.

County government, townships, villages and cit-ies use property tax pro-ceeds as their main sourceof operating revenue.

Local school districts andcommunity colleges usethem for operating reve-nues, and for capital im-provements.

Intermediate school dis-tricts pay for special ed-

ucation and vocationaleducation services from vot-er-approved property taxlevies.

The state levies 6 millsto help support the schoolaid fund, used to make pay-ments to local school dis-tricts.

Special authorities, suchas the Delta District Libraryand the Grand Ledge Area

Emergency Services Author-ity have been authorized byvoters to levy property taxlevies.

The City of Lansing hasthe highest municipal taxrate at 15.7 mills, but thehighest general governmenttaxes are levied in the Vil-lage of Vermontville, whichcharges 14.4 mills on top ofthe 3.6 mills levied by Ver-

montville Township.Residents of the small vil-

lage in western Eaton Coun-ty are spared from havingthe highest total taxes in thecounty only because theirschool taxes, for the MapleValley Schools, are amongthe lowest. Maple Valley’s8.9 mills are second only tothe Lansing School District’s8.0 mill levy.

Tax rates vary widely across Eaton [email protected]

Property tax rates vary widely across Eaton County, depending on municipality and school district, with the highest rate more thandouble the lowest. Many of the taxes are levied based on voter approved proposals to support higher levels of government services.

Leanne Richard, Stacy Su-rato and April Trudgeon.

These people on the ed-ucation foundation raisedover $33,000 through itemsthat were donated for a si-lent and live auction.

Rick Acker’s brother,Scott, was the auctioneer, and media favorite, DaveAckerly, was the host.

There were over 90 busi-nesses, individuals, andfamilies who made dona-tions.

This was a tremendousoutpouring of generosity.

Thanks to businesssponsorships, the Educa-tion Foundation was ableto meet that goal. The spon-sors were:

My wife, Nancy, was thelucky one to bid for dinnerand two tickets to a showat Wharton Center.

Who says Christmasdoesn’t come a little early?

For the last few years, the Education Foundationhas brought a lot of joyto students and teachers inthe school system.

When we struggle tocontinue funding pro-grams, the Education Foun-dation provided teachergrants and resources tomove instructionalprograms to a new level.

Thanks to evenings likethese, they have providedteachers with science kitsfor all of our elementarygrades so kids can learn byseeing, touching, and do-ing.

Eaton Rapids PublicSchools really appreciatesthose who attended, thosewho bought items, andthose who donated andmade gifts as this year’sevent was a stunning suc-cess.

Thanksgiving and Christ-mas are the most “giving”times of the year.

Most of us receivecountless pieces of mail re-questing donations.

There is a seemingly un-ending request from everycharity.

There is a tendency forus to discard large num-bers of these requests, andyet, the needs are so over-whelming, that to do sowould give any conscien-tious person a sense of ne-glect and guilt.

Each of us has a favor-ite charity, and sometimesmore than one.

If we pause to thinkabout it, our involvementis strategic to the mainte-nance of the American way

of life. Philanthropy is verymuch a core value in thiscountry.

It is amazing to seemulti-billionaires, such asWarren Buffett and BillGates, turn their fortunesinto foundations that caninfluence and modify thelives of millions of people.

It is wonderful that theyare able to do this, but itis the local businesses andthe citizenry across Ameri-ca who still feed the poor, house the homeless, and

sustain supporting chari-ties in every town and com-munity.

We are a nation whichhas built its sovereignty onthe premise that we carefor each other in every pos-sible way.

One of the greatest as-sets we can pass on to ourchildren is the understand-ing that none of us standsalone.

Our interdependence isthe key to so much of ourstrength.

As we move into the hol-iday season, we have anopportunity to once againdemonstrate our charityand concern for each oth-er.

At a time when we, asa nation, are threatened on

numerous fronts, we arechallenged more than per-haps ever before. It is theability we have to care foreach other, that causes usto lift up not only our neigh-bors, but those who are ingreat need, and have hugeobstacles to overcome.

It is the utilization ofour personal assets that en-courages us to reach outand help those who are inneed.

Kineman earns MISCA honorsEATON RAPIDS - Charlotte senior Maizie Kineman,

swimming for the combined Eaton Rapids-Charlotte swimteam, earned Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches As-sociation Second-Team honors.

Kineman swam in the 50 and 100 freestyle individualevents and was part of the Greyhound relay teams. Herbest time of 56.70 in the 100 freestyle placed her eighthamong all CAAC swimmers. She was ninth in the 50 free-style with a best time of 25.74. Ironically, both of her timeswould have qualified Kineman for the Division 3 state meetwhere teams from the CAAC Gold/White division schoolscompete. But because of the combined enrollments of Ea-ton Rapids and Charlotte, Kineman had to qualify underthe faster Division 1 times.
