Scholarship Recipients Honored at Reception in Grand Rapids July 2011 Volume 6 Issue 2 The Philanthropic Leader of Michigan’s Oral Health Community The Michigan Dental Association Foundation welcomed its 2011 Mitus Scholarship recipients at a reception during the MDA’s recent Annual Session in Grand Rapids. The recipients and their families were invited to attend the MDA House of Delegates meeting on Thursday morning to hear MDA President Dr. Gary Jeffers speak. The recipients were impressed with the president’s address on the future of dentistry. Candidates also enjoyed seeing the House of Delegates in action prior to the reception. “These young people are eager and enthusiastic to begin their careers and perhaps have been inspired to get involved in organized dentistry,” said Dr. Mike Jennings, Foundation president. “These are exciting times in dentistry as we develop the future leaders of tomorrow.” The scholarship recipients then made their way to a private reception sponsored by MDA Insurance. There, they met the Michigan Dental Association Foundation Board of Directors and heard encouraging words from President Jennings and board member Kathy Mielke RDH, who served as chair of the Foundation Scholarship Committee. “This year’s recipients have the most impressive resumes thus far,” Mielke said. Mielke added, “It’s encouraging to see the youth of today who will be the future leaders of tomorrow. They are ambitious and talented, and the Michigan Dental Association Foundation is proud to cultivate such professionals.” A former Mitus Scholarship recipient, Dr. Alexa Vitek, also attended the reception. A recent graduate (Class of 2004), she currently serves as the chair of the MDA Committee on Membership and was honored at this year’s MDA meeting with the MDA’s 2011 New Dentist Leadership Award. She told the current class of scholarship recipients: “I was sitting in your seat seven years ago, months from graduation and excited to enter the profession. As you enter the profession, be motivated, and continue to do volunteer work, provide service to the community, and be a unified voice for dentistry.” She added: “Do great things, get involved in your profession, go to a meeting, and ask a friend to join you. When we work together we can do great things!” MDA Insurance President Craig Start encouraged the students to take advantage of all the MDA offers to support their careers. “We are here to see you succeed,” Start said. He also met with Jerek Petrous, the MDA Insurance/Bill Schumann Scholarship winner from the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School, and MDA Insurance Scholarship Recipient Steven Davis from the University of Michigan. The Michigan Dental Association Foundation has awarded 106 scholarships in 13 years for a total of $122,000 in support of students. These scholarships are awarded to students from the state of Michigan attending schools in Michigan and pursuing careers in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental assisting. The Michigan Dental Association Foundation is working hard to keep highly skilled professionals in Michigan!
