Introduction
Definition: A surge is an increase of at least ten percent in current
and voltage that typically lasts only a few microseconds.
Although the duration of a surge is very short, voltage can
rise to as much as a few thousand volts.
Primary Cause of Surge
Lighting - can result in immediate, catastrophic failure
of electronic equipment.
Secondary Cause of Surge
Electrical transients - occur when reactive loads, such as
motors and compressors in Air
Conditioning Units are switched
on and off.
These transients are the silent killers of electronic
equipment for they often occur with no outward
indication.
