SAFER NEIGHBOURHOODSI have attended both Framlingham andSaxmundham Neighbourhood Taskingmeetings. New priorities for tacklingcrime are being laid down followinggood results for earlier work by theSafer Neighbourhood Teams.

Over the course of the weekend, several Section 27 Directions to Leavenotices were issued and a young man,who failed to adhere to the warning, was arrested. Another, acting drunkand disorderly, was arrested for threat-ening behaviour and another forpossession of cannabis. Willow Emerald Damselflies Reach Badingham

In the last few years, two continental species of damselflies (smallred-eyed and willow emerald) have become established in thiscountry. The latter was first found in the Stour valley in 2009, spreadto the Gipping and Deben valleys in the following year and this yearhas turned up in our garden. On a sunny day in mid-September I counted at least eight, including two pairs flying intandem.

The willow emerald is quite a large damselfly, with a dark, bronzy-green body; its most distinctive feature is the dark edged, creamycoloured pterostigma (wing spot) on the leading edge of theforewing. Although it is usually said that damselflies rest with thewings parallel to the body, the willow emerald, in common with theother emeralds, holds them at an angle of about 45°; perhaps it can'tquite make up its mind, either. The most unusual thing about thisdamselfly is that it lays its eggs on trees overhanging water, ratherthan on emergent vegetation or directly in the water as others do.I'm guessing that the nymphs drop into the water when they hatch.

My observations suggest that they prefer trees, not necessarilywillow, with a slightly easterly aspect and branches about 10 to 15feet from the water surface. They seem to be most active aroundnoon (between 12:00 and 14:00 BST) and are on the wing for muchof September and October. If you see any next year, I'd be interestedto hear of them.

Welcome BackBack in the Summer, Karen (nee Garratt) returned to live in thevillage. Now with Karen’s husband Glen and their son Alex, wewelcome the Rae family to Low Street.

Karen’s family has lived in Badingham for at least 200 years.Through the family of her grandmother Millie Dunnett, alsoTerence’s aunt, we have traced records of their ancestors backto at least 1782. In that year, George III was on the throne andAmerica’s War of Independence ended.

I wonder whose family can claim the longest Badingham link?

Tish

This term has seen the Brownies holding a dinner party; they chosethe menu, helped to prepare the meal and laid the table, before sittingdown to eat their meal.

We have also had an autumn themed evening making caterpillars andfurniture from conkers and acorns. Apple pies and crumble were alsomade and enjoyed by everyone.

An interesting evening was spent with Caroline Meigh learning aboutphotography and creating some photographic prints of their own. Abonfire evening saw the girls making bat finger puppets and ‘bonfire’cupcakes with orange icing and jelly diamond flames.

We are about to start on our Christmas crafts and will finish the termwith a party.

This will be my last report as regrettably the pack will close inDecember due to falling numbers. I would like to thank everyone whohas helped over the years and hope that all those who have passedthrough the pack have enjoyed their time as a Brownie.

Have you been introduced to Herman?

Herman is a popular name in these parts but the Herman I am alluding to isa sourdough who grows with careful nurturing. Herman will quadruple in size,so you are able to split him into portions to pass on to friends while keepingenough to make your own cake. The cake is moist and delicious - you won’tbe disappointed.

To tell you the truth, Mum was rather dubious when Ann offered her some ofher Herman cake sourdough. You are presented with instructions to feed thegrowing yeast and keep it warm, just covered with a tea towel for 10 days.

The timings are such that you pass on your starter mix to friends the daybefore you bake your cake. So, if you haven’t baked your cake, and tastedthe results, it takes some work convincing friends to share your dough.“Doesn’t it smell?” they ask. Well, yes, it smells quite yeasty when it isuncovered and visitors with a good sense of smell may detect a beery aromain your kitchen. What you need to tell them is Herman smells fantastic whenyou have added cinnamon and apple, or raisins or chocolate or ginger orbanana or quite endless possibilities, according to the recipes you can findonline.

Mum added cooking apples and cinnamon to her Herman. Not convinced after10 days stirring and feeding with milk and sugar, Mum said she didn’t wantto waste dried fruit on him so she used windfall apples!

Maybe it would be a good ploy for the people who are the source of yoursourdough to present a slice of their cake to encourage you to continue yourendeavours. It does make a large cake and it keeps well – let’s just sayDad is the cautious type and, as he had a party invite at the end of theweek, waited until after the event before trying his first slice!

So now you know Herman is worth the effort, why don’t you give him a home?Lynn Foster maintains her sourdough by keeping back an extra portion so shewill be happy to share her Herman’s offspring. Lynn says the best cake shehas made so far is when she had already added mixed spice and raisins andthen knocked over the jar of ginger into the bowl, making a nicely spicy versionthat she is now trying to replicate. Enterprise Badingham“So far” report for 2011 .....

Our first meeting was March this year and it is with great pleasure tolist below what is happening now and plans for 2012. Over the lastseven months a variety of activities have been requested and sug-gested. These are as follows:-

Community MarketOur first Market was in September and exceeded expectations. It isestimated that well over 150 people attended, most from the parishbut many passers by saw the posters and stopped to see the stallsand buy. Success was such that several stalls ran out of suppliesbefore the end of the morning. All included produce or services fromthe parish. Particularly popular among the children were the twoapple presses producing apple juice, including apples brought byvisitors. Our thanks go to all those who prepared the site and workedon the stalls, and to those who kindly supplied equipment: tables, awnings, apple presses and so on. And naturally to Sue and Gary ofthe White Horse for the site and providing a barbeque. In 2012 wehope to have more markets all with local products, produce andservices. Please keep an eye out on the Badingham web site and inthe Echo for dates of next markets. If you wish to get involved orhave a stall please contact David.

Community GardensPreparations are well in progress and the agreement between thePPC and Enterprise Badingham is being drafted. Specifications for thegardens are also being arranged and various local persons are to beapproached in relation to the works needed. If you wish to have asmall growing plot in the garden please contact Tanya or Janet.

Bring and Buy Books in aid of church maintenance fundsThis has been well supported and a good selection of books keepappearing, generating money from sales. Thank you to all. We hopeto continue this into 2012. We would like someone to help keep thebooks tidy and well stocked. If you are keen to help, contact Tanya.

FinanceWe are delighted to have received a grant of £1000 from theCommunity Environmental Action Fund. The cheque was presented toour secretary Tanya by Dan Wheals at the October committee meet-ing. The money is mostly ringed for establishing the Community Mar-ket as a regular activity for Badingham and to develop an online shop.

Page 23

Online ShopSome may have seen at the Market the SUMA online shop. This issomething a few people have joined this year but it is hoped otherswill join next year. We are in the process of setting up an orderingsystem and, when ready, we will be giving more details.

Oil SyndicateThe oil company RIX offer syndicate buying within a village. To date15 house holds have signed up. A percentage of oil sales will bereturned to the village annually in the form of a cheque; the money tobe used to benefit in some way our village community. Please do joinup there are benefits in keeping the price down and less movement oftransport / oil tank lorries on our lanes. If you are interested Janetwould be happy to explain more and help you get signed up.

Verge ConservationOur village verges offer homes to a variety of wild flowers and insects. Some of these verges have now been designated conservation placesand will be managed to enhance the habitat for these wildflowers andinsects that inhabit them. This has been activated by one of our groupmembers, Janet, and we hope you will all appreciate the benefits thiswill give to our environment.

ARTS GroupThis is an exciting new idea which is in its embryo stage but if you arekeen to engage in the ARTS please do contact Caroline on 01728638981 for further information.

Finally, none of the above would have happened without villagersgetting involved and joining in. Together we have achieved plenty andwe hope next year to continue enjoying these lovely communityactivities alongside all the other great groups and activities our villagealready offers and build on this. Please do contact any of theCommittee (listed overleaf) to get involved, give us ideas and comealong and support our village and each other.

Again, Thank you.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year,Tanya Newton
