WHEN a statue of Nelson Mandela was unveiled inParliament Square in London a few years ago, unknown patriots placed a South African scarfaround its neck the following night.

Due to the extreme cold weather that London’swinter is known for, the gift was seen as a timelyintervention that would help Madiba survive the chill.

The scarf soon became a popular and talkedabout attraction until its disappearance a fewmonths later.

Mindful ofthat incident, andalsoprompted bythecold American winter, the Premier of KwaZuluNatal,Senzo Mchunu, on a recent visit to the state of

Maryland in the US, donated his scarf to anotherstatue of Madiba, situated outside the South AfricanEmbassy in Washington.

Mchunu said: “As our former leader, Tata Madibais a shining light and example to us all that humanityand peace can prevail. It is therefore apt that we leavehim with a little bit of our warmth that we broughtfrom KwaZuluNatal.”

echoAutoWhite cars are boomingworldwide>> The colour of choice

THEnext timeyoubuya car, youmight want to pause a whilelonger to decide what colour

you choose.Top car companies throwmillions

at researching what the latest tastesare, and say the colour of a vehicle isso important to customers that it canbe the difference between buying ornot.

TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassiccolours—redsforPorschesandothersports cars— and a few less conven-tional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truckdecked out in “forged copper”).

But there was no mistaking thepre-eminence of white. Particularlyat the Volkswagen stand, where sev-eral cars, the stairs and much of thefurniture was white.

In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothingis done by mistake, of course.

AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitre-ferredtothe“Appleeffect”—theCali-fornian tech giant — to explain thepropensity for white vehicles.

Sitting at a white table, on whitechairs, inawhiteroom,OonaScheep-ers of Volkswagen told AFP: “Whitefor cars really peaked in the 1970sand 1980s, and then all of a suddendisappeared.

“But in the past 10 years we havenoticed an increase again in white. And it definitely camewith the AppleiPod era because Apple started to doeverything with white, and a lot ofchrome or metal finishes.

“In combination it was nice and

fresh. But before that, white was really not sellingin Europe because peopleassociated it with deliverycars and it looked cheap.

“But the combination withmetal and chrome looks fresh andcompletely new. White is boomingworldwide.”

So ifonewere tochooseablackve-hicle over a white one, what kind ofperson would that make you?

“Youcouldbesporty.Butpeople inhot countries like white.

“Whitedefinitelydeflectsheat, butif youhaveablackcar it cangetdamnhot inside. And then in a country likeSouth Africa you often have to over-take into direct, oncoming traffic, butwhite is very visible.

“So it’s a safety feature as well insomecountries.Metallicgreyorblackjustmelts into the colour of the tar, soit is not that visible.”

Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, saidthecolourwassocrucial tosomepeo-ple that they would buy a car purelybecause of that—nevermind the de-sign of the vehicle.

She too identified an Apple rippleeffect in propelling white to a best-seller worldwide for Ford.

“White is very clean, very techni-cal, very modern. So most cars lookgood inwhite,” shesaid, addingotherpopular colours included blacks andsilvers, while blue is also on the up.

Lampinen identified only “slightdifferences” in preferences in differ-ent countries because, she said, ofglobalisation. Environment, cultureand climate can all effectwhat colourcar someone might buy, she added.

IT is good news for dads whofeared their days of roaringalong in a sports car werebehind them. Jaguar is build-ing its first 4x4 – and there’splenty of room for the kids.

The British firm an-nounced 1 300 new jobs tohelp it create the five-door,five-seater sports utility vehi-cle, which will cost aroundR660 000 in South Africa.

Firmlyaimedat“Jagdads”with children to ferry around, the all-wheel drive car willcome with extra grip technol-ogytomakeitsafeandreliablein all weathers.

More practical than thesleek saloons and super-charged sports cars that Jag-uar is known for, it is alsodesigned to appeal to busymums on the school run – forwhom it has been dubbed the“She-Type” Jaguar.

To keep the youngstersentertained during longerjourneys, the car will alsofeature on-board wi-fi and a

Meridian digital audiosystem.

ItwillofficiallybecalledtheF-Pacewhen it goes on sale asa British rival to the PorscheMacan and BMW X4 crosso-ver. Jaguar’s bossesmade theannouncement in Detroitrecently ahead of the NorthAmerican International AutoShow, which started lastweek.

Designdirector IanCallumsaid:“TheF-Paceisourfamilysports car. It will encapsulateeverything that Jaguar standsfor—beautifuldesign, precisehandling, a supple ride,

luxurious interior finishesand cutting-edge technology.”

Itwill bepoweredbyanewgeneration of fuel-efficienttwo-litre petrol and dieselengines, to be built at thecompany’s new factory inWolverhampton. But driverswho want even more powercan opt instead for the 3-litreV6 engine used in the JaguarF-Type.

Global sales director AndyGoss said Jaguar’s aim withthe F-Pace was to create the“ultimate practical sportscar.”

What’s more, it’s headed forSouth Africa in 2016, althoughdetails will be revealed closer tothe local launch.

Mike Accavitti, senior vicepresident and general manager ofHonda’s Acura division, said: “Our

commitment was to create an allnew NSX true to the heritage ofNSX a supercar that delivers anew driving experience, one inwhich every part of the vehiclerespects the smartest part of thecar, the driver.”

Johnathan Norman, NSX interior design project leader, said:“Consistent with the ‘humancentered supercar’ developmentconcept, the NSX was designedfrom the inside out with an uncompromising focus on the driver.

The NSX features an“advanced sports package” withkey powertrain components themidmounted engine, two front

Bafana Bafana notyet out Mashaba>> All they need now is to win all the two remaining games

BAFANA Bafana head coachEphraim “Shakes”Mashabawasabig andno-nonsensede-

Mashabaalwaysdisplayedhisbigheart in decision making in defenceandhealso tooknoprisonerswithhistackles.

Mashaba’s natural big heart wason display again this week after theSouth African senior team, BafanaBafanawent down 3-1 to the Africangiants and Africa’s ranked number 1Algeria in the opening fixture of the

2015AfricanCupofNations inEqua-torial Guinea.

DuringthematchtheSAsidewerethe first ones toscoreand lookedcon-vincing but later it all fell apart. Theyconcededanowngoal, missed apen-alty and kept on shaky in defence.

Attheend, theSAoutfit lostnotbe-causewereoutclassedbuttheiroppo-nentsweremoreexperiencedanddideverything properly as far as the ba-sics are concerned.

Mashaba openly pleaded with allMzansi soccer followers not to giveup, but to staypositive and strongbe-cause it’s not the end of the SA team.

Headmitted that itwasnot a goodandconvincingstart forBafanaBafa-na.

“It was a poor start, made a lot ofstupid mistakes and it’s not accepta-ble, especially in the competition likethis. But all is not lost and there is stillhope of survival,”said Mashaba.

Tomorrow (January 23), BafanaBafanawill haveanotherhighmoun-tain to climb when they face anotherexperiencedoroneofthemightyAfri-cans outfit, Senegal at 9pm at Stadiode Mongomo.

Obviously this will be anothertough or impossible assignment for

Mashaba’s team. Senegal is unlikelytowait for theSouthAfricans to cometo them but are expected to lead theattack from the first whistle.

AlsoSA’sopponentsareplayingto-gether for more than three years be-cause their current teamwas formedfrom theU23 ranks and grew togeth-er.

“We gave the game away, the bestteam lost after we creating so many

scoring opportunities in the first half.Weallowed themback into thematchand we got punished.

“Lift your heads up because it isnot over yet. There are six points toplay for.Wehaveamountain to climbbut we are still confident that we willdo well in our next match,” saidMashaba.

The good news for South Africa isthat theywill have theservices toEricMathoho and Reneilwe Letsholon-yane who were out on suspension.-Jerry Barnes
